What do you think is the worst natural disaster?

Went out to ladies' night last night and somehow we got on the topic of earthquakes. Shivers, they are the worst natural disaster IMO. I haven't felt one here but have felt 2 minor earthquakes (Denver & Manila) and 1 that we were high up in a hotel in Taipei that scared me half to death (plus then I was scared of a tusnami - I didn't list that separately because I thought they kind of went hand in hand with an earthquake)

Our friend was there for the one in Nepal and it was really sad and a depressing way to end margarita night.

There was an article published that predicts it's supposed to have a magnitude of somewhere between 8.7-9.2 and up to 13,000 people could die. So I try not to worry about it but, it does terrify me!

I can't find it now but when I posted this an article popped up on my FB about how Portland is due for an 8.0+ within 50 years. They kept saying Manila was due for a big one and I was glad nothing major happened while we were there.

I grew up with hurricanes but you get enough advance warning that they never scared me. They were a little scarier as typhoons in the Philippines because infrastructure isn't quite the same. Tacloban got wrecked while we were there but we were north enough to hardly get anything from that storm.

I have experienced an earthquake, a hurricane, and tornados. I think it depends on the intensity of each, but hurricanes probably scare me the most.

Well I've lived through floods, hurricanes, and tornadoes, so they don't seem as scary. We hear tornado sirens a few times a year. It's normal here.

But I don't really have to worry about earthquakes in Ohio, so they seem terrifying from a distance. I think about what happened in Haiti. It's just awful. I don't think I could live in California for that reason.

I said earthquake, but there are a number of factors to consider for me. Like an earthquake in a big city with lots of infrastructure that could collapse is so scary. But just sitting, wondering if a tornado is going to come your way freaks me out (I have never dealt with tornados, but I am good at working myself up over things).

Earthquakes.

Unfortunately in the past 5 years I've been through a number of major ones and my city was devastated by three big ones a few years before DD was born. I've lost people I know to them as well as a whole city that I grew up knowing.

Now, it's not the quakes that scare me as much as it is being apart from my family when they happen. While I was pregnant with LO we had a big one on Valentines Day. SS and I were in the mall. DH was driving DD around because she was asleep. We had to evacuate and they locked down the streets. Cell phones go down because everyone tries to use them and I had no way of knowing where they were or how to get to them. When we finally met up I grabbed DD and cried so hard!!!!

We're still getting aftershocks and my region is overdue for a 8 plus. They're a part of our day to day consideration now. I never park in the mall car parks, I always identify all exits anywhere I go, I'm not keen on events or venues with mass crowds and we are constantly refreshing disaster packs.

craftcrazymama, that is terrifying. My friend said they had like 500 aftershocks that lasted for months in Nepal. I can't imagine going through a really bad earthquake and then being reminded about it constantly through aftershocks...

We've had over 12000 aftershocks since the first big one. That's including all aftershocks from the 3 main shakes. It took a long time to settle down to smaller ones and the first few months after each frayed a lot of nerves.

I saw a movies about a tsunami (I can't remember the name), but I think that would be one of my biggest fears. With two LOs who are nowhere near able to swim... So scary.

The Impossible? Amazing movie.

This. Living in the PNW is f'ing scary when it comes to the earthquake risk.

craftcrazymama I was going to ask if you lived near the city with all the quakes, clearly you do. I remember watching the news casts and being terrified for you guys! I cannot imagine.

I just watched Nat Geo's documentary on the worst natural disasters and the worst has to be a combination of earthquake + tsunami.

They gave the black plague #1 but there were a few tsunamis on the list (one caused by a volcano)

Hmm I wouldn't really consider a plague a "natural disaster." I think of natural disasters as being weather-related, not disease.

Nat Geo included the Spanish Flu & Black Plague because they were biologically natural. I tend to think meteorological and geological too so I was surprised at first.
