That's why I've added the supplement back in... It just seems impossible that he's getting enough from me without it. It was just so confusing to hear that it's all set... I don't get it. I guess I just need to trust my intuition and supplement as I go.
Granted - it was only a 20 minute feeding and I usually do 30, so mayyyybe he would get to 2 ounces in that time, and sometimes he eats more than other times. It's still a little short of what he needs in a day, I think.

I can't stop focusing on this. I wish somebody could just tell me what to do, I wish there was a clear answer and not just something I had to suss out on my own. I feel like I'm just making stuff up and guessing, and I just want this little guy to thrive and grow - and I fear that I'm not doing the best for him.

Hugs to you! It is frustrating. I've had the same thought, and it seems to me like if knowing exactly what he's getting is most important & would give peace of mind, maybe EP would be the best match? For me, I've figured out that I definitely want to offer breastmilk for the immunity boost since my oldest is in kindergarten & bringing home germs; I mostly enjoy the actual act of breastfeeding, but I can't provide enough, so I nurse as much as I can before offering supplements; pumping is a bit of a hassle, so I throw it in randomly when I can. My kiddo is pretty clear at communicating when she's unhappy & I can kind of deduce if it's likely hunger, and she will push the bottle out of her mouth with her tongue when she's had enough, so I'm not *super* worried about her growth (although it's definitely on my radar & I won't relax about it until she gets weighed at the next dr appt). For whatever it's worth, it sounds to me like you're doing a good job of responding to your kid's needs, and I would tend to side with you that mathematically, it sounds like he needs supplementation. Can you call the LC back and ask about the numbers? Or maybe you're better off being done with that, and just relying on your kid & your gut? Sometimes limiting all that external "noise" can be helpful, especially when you're getting differing advice from different people.

Thanks, I think I just needed a little reassurance. I think I'm dealing with some PPD or anxiety, and I've just felt obsessed over feeding. (brb calling my therapist...)
Maybe you're right dorkusmalorkus. There is a lot of external noise, and there's no clear cut answer. Gotta just try different approaches, I guess.

Has/does anyone use a nipple sheild? Were you told how to wean from using it? Any tips? I've been trying to work on her latching without it and struggling.

Boo! I hate that they never gave any guidance on how to stop using it! It's not any easy thing to wean off and DD gets so frustrated.

Same here. Around 6 weeks or so, she'd randomly latch without it, but that was short-lived. Her attempts to latch without it now are ridiculous to the point of being sort of funny. It's like she's trying to latch with an anesthetized mouth. ...DS weaned off of one, but it was totally random & I don't think I did anything to cause it.

Yup, DDs mouth is open such a small amount it's pretty comical. Then she's basically just licking me... not sure how else to help her.

I feel so frustrated that I have issues telling the difference between hungry and tired cues.
It's so hard to tell the difference. If DH is home I'll sometimes give DS to him..if he comes down I know it's tired, if not I feed. But that only helps less than 10% of time. So I feel like I'm either over feeding or starving my kid. Why can't they have a different cry?!

After reading over and over that babies have a different cry for different needs, I felt so defeated. Then a friend who had 3 kids when I only had 1 told me that was BS. So I cried out of pure relief.
My kid has 3 cries: 1) I am not yet really upset. 2) You had to do something with big sisters for too long and now I really need you. 3) I am overtired or in pain and completely hysterical.

None of this "that's the dirty diaper cry" stuff.
Yes! One of the doctors I saw for lactation help said that she had to listen to recordings of babies crying during her medical training - and she has 3 kids Of her own.... and still can't tell the diffference!
I'm still lurking August and saw this.. I'm taking a fenugreek/ blessed thistle combo. I can definitely tell a difference over the last week. E has a lazy latch/suck and hasn't been good at draining either breast so my supply was suffering but it has picked up a ton with the capsules. I'm headed toward an oversupply now though so I'm hoping to fix the nursing issues now that she's getting bigger.
Thanks jennybeans! I read online that it has the opposite interaction for some people (makes them dry up) so I got nervous about it!
How are you and the little doing?
Thanks for asking.. we've had some weight gain issues early on but we seem to be doing better. She's being evaluated by a pediatric dentist and LC today for tongue tie/lip tie. I'm hoping that could help with our lazy nursing issues if something is going on with the tongue but I know we still have a lot of work to do together to figure this nursing thing out.
I was worried too about losing supply but almost all the reviews for this were positive and I read the blessed thistle helps. Hopefully that can help with some of your concerns too!

So I missed the boat on this because we were initially supplementing with formula. But with my pumping schedule we've been exclusively breast milk now.
Am I supposed to give vitamin drops? Can you recommend one?

I am using the Wellspring baby D drops. I got them at Target. If you have the Ibotta app, there's a rebate on them right now :)Eta sorry, Upspring, not Wellspring
hannahbear we use Carlson baby's daily D3. I think I got it on Amazon. It's just one drop a day (I think a lot are...but I know some are an entire dropper daily. Your preference, really)

hannahbear we are currently using the Enfamil D-Vi-Sol because that's what H grabbed, but I prefer Carlson Baby's Daily D3 and will order it when our D-Vi-Sol runs out.

Does the pump kinda suck and leave half behind for you guys too? At a normal mid-day pump when my boobs don't feel very full I get 2-3 ounces. When I go 6 hours at night and wake up SUPER full and exploding, it's still only pumping 3 oz. I know there's way more in there, it's annoying that the pump isn't getting it. I have the standard madela that's provided through insurance.
When I pumped, I'd use the letdown setting a lot to get more milk. I'd also squeeze from all directions to empty the whole breast. It's kind of weird, but I also had better output if I leaned forward. When I was really full and she hadn't eaten, I could pump 6 ounces. You really just have to experiment to find out what works for you.
