I was frustrated breastfeeding tonight (with R crying and not latching well) so I pumped and it's taking like half an hour for R to take the bottle (starts, gets tired, stops, starts again) for him to drink half of the 2 oz I pumped. I can't remember if this is common for bottles and breastfeeding so early or if it's more due to his heart issue making him tired more easily. He generally is able to latch, but I feel like 2-3 feeds a day he gets frustrated and won't latch more than a second.
If this kid could stop attempting to stretch and pull off my nipple, that'd be fantastic!
omg mine loves falling asleep sucking and when I try to pull him off he sucks harder like "no, no, not yet!". I told husband I had no idea how much my nipple could stretch until I try to pull him off! It's quite remarkable lol

LOL have you tried using your pinkie finger to break the seal?

Oooh I'll try that. Last night I tried pulling back thinking it would just pop back out. Nope!!

eaglewife thank you! I talked to my lc and she said the same things. Massage in hot shower helped a lot and so did baby by nursing every two hours so I could try to get relief that way. My lc also said that the pump I have is great for an established supply, but isn't as useful in the early days. I may grab a hand pump since one of my friends has had great success with that, but so far the pain is much better today!

+1 - I'm like "if you're sleeping you can go on my chest or in the RnP, but you don't get to nap with a nipple in your mouth, then I verrry gently try to move him and he's all "no, no, I'm up, I swear!" Not cool, dude.

Feeling totally accomplished! Baby gained about an ounce per day in the last week. May not be exactly where I want to be BFwise, but I'm not starving him!!

High fives hannahbear!!! Isn't that the BEST feeling? When they told is how much LO gained at her two week check, I cried. It's such a relief. You are doing it!
I pumped today. I went to the dr today to get my boobs checked out and as soon as he touched them I started leaking everywhere. LO had just nursed about an hour prior so he told me I may want to pump a little to build a stash and try to keep boobs empty as possible to ward off clogs and infection.
It went so much better than it did the first few times I tried and was painless. I pumped one side while LO nursed from the other and got 4oz. I pumped for 15min but the last 5 nothing was coming out. So do I just stop pumping when the milk stops flowing? I wasn't sure so I just gave up and figured I would try again tomorrow.
If you keep pumping after it stops flowing you'll tell your body you need more. Sounds like you already have an oversupply, so personally I wouldn't add to it. But if you want to donate milk or something you might.

Our pedi office is in a nice outdoor mall, and I wanted to walk around a little and look for shirts to wear for our newborn/family photos this weekend, but he was being super fussy and crying. Since I refused to give up on my one trip out of the house all week, I nursed in public for the first time! We found a bench in a nice shaded area, tank top went down and bra went up, and I used his swaddle blanket as a scarf JIC he decided to pull his head away. It was the first time I nursed without the boppy pillow in a non-side lying position, and it went SO well!! I'm soooo happy to know that we can nurse on the go if needed!

Ahhh that makes sense. I have no interest in donating as I'm going back on meds soon. So now I have to figure out the happy medium between staying relatively empty but not creating an oversupply. Fudge. This feels like calculus. Makes my brain hurt.
On the other hand if you pump more than you need you can get a freezer stash going, that way if your supply decreases later or BF isn't working out the way you hoped you will still have breastmilk to give. I froze my first bag today!

BFing is going better - he latches every time now!! But my poor nipples have been through a lot lately. Is it ok to ice them? It's not engorgement, it's just very tender nips

hummingbird125 yay that's great!! I nursed at the table at a baby shower this past weekend and it was my first time in public as well. I figured it was all women so didn't even bother to cover. Was weird at first but then no fucks given lol

My LC said icing your nipples is ok (and try it right before a feeding to provide some relief during the feeding). She just warned me against icing my whole breast before a feeding because it can slow down the milk flow (I had been laying an ice pack on my whole chest. She said use an ice cube just on the nipple).

I wonder if I'll feel more weird in front of people I know. We have to go to my SIL's wedding when DS is 7 weeks old. I'll be able to nurse in the bridal suite, but that'll be in front of my 3 SIL's and my MIL, plus anyone else who's in there. I'm pretty comfortable in front of all of them... But I still never envisioned having my boobs out with them!

Depending on the person, I feel more comfortable in front of strangers. Hope it goes well!
I feel more comfortable with strangers. I was at my parents house and my cousin and my moms dad are living there (long story for another day) and I left a few mins before I knew he'd be getting up and hungry and went to a park and fed him.

I have to gush for a second! We went to the breastfeeding clinic and E did a weighed feeding - he took 2 ounces from me!!! Major improvement from last week, when he only did 12 ml. So yay breastfeeding!!

I would just pump a little to relieve engorgement. I would also suggest pumping first, then feeding your baby so LONis getting the fattier hindmilk. Foremilk imbalance makes their tummies hurt

Isn't that the best feeling? It's like the world becomes your oyster
I whip my boobs out anywhere, anytime. This was also pre-baby though. Free spirit and all.
What bugs me about NIP is looky loos watching my kid eat. I mean ok, you think its some amazing thing, but my kid is trying to have lunch. Stop your staring. No one likes to be watched while they're eating.
Just starting cracking up thinking about your story with your neighbor! Hehehe
I've been pumping and freezing about once a day. We've tried bottles twice now, but I pumped right before and fed him and he did okay. Well tonight I was upstairs and he started crying so DH goes in the freezer, takes out a full bag and heats it up. There were a bunch of 3-4 oz bags in there but he takes out the 6oz one. No- the kid isn't going to eat 6 oz today, that was in the freezer for a reason.
I know he was just trying to help, and I'm being super bitchy about this, but commmmmme onnnnnn.
ETA i should have him feed him the rest of what he thawed in the middle of the night huh? Lol
