I know lots of people have been having issues with gas, reflux, food sensitivities, etc. I thought we could have a thread for troubleshooting and sharing solutions!
LO keeps having little bumps pop up on him. It doesn't look like baby acne and they come and go but are really noticeable after he eats I'm worried it might be an allergy. He also gets gassy and throws everything he ate back up sometimes. Gripe water was a life save with B for us, this baby- not so much
Dear God if something doesn't help my LO poop I'm going to go crazy. There is extra iron in her formula so she is so constipated. I've used glycerin supp. as needed but obviously that is not a good day to day solution. She won't take apple juice and is to young for anything solid. I'd gladly field suggestions. She is on probiotics but they seem to have stoped helping since her hernia surgery. I just sat in shower with warm water to help her poop (and clear her nose but that is a cold issue).
kokopelli That sounds rough! R takes iron supplements daily for his heart condition, but doesn't have issues with constipation because of it. I wonder if there's another reason because my doctors didn't seem to think the iron supplement would cause constipation.

DD3 wakes up due to gas pain as well as most recently spit up. Some feeds she pulls off to arch her back and scream, but this is new.
My older 2 were both insanely gassy with a diagnosis of "wait until 12-16 weeks and it will resolve." I expect nothing more helpful for DD3, which is super depressing. Gas drops and probiotics have never helped us, neither has strict dairy and soy elimination.

My boys' allergies presented with eczema but not small bump rashes, if that helps

E has always been super gassy since day one. He would moan and groan and yelp. Bit always had regular poops so we knew it wasn't constipation pains. He would constantly arch his back and scream bloody murder but it was like it would come and pass through and he'd stop and be fine. We noticed a ton of dry gagging and then regurgitation. It wasn't like normal "oh he spit up a little" it was like he's choking on crud in his throat and screaming.
I honestly had no idea what's normal for a baby and what's not, and I'm one of those people who thinks you only call the doctor when there's a fever or something immanent. But after describing it here, a few people said I should call the doc. So glad I did, turns out he had like every classic symptom of acid reflux and was prescribed zantac. He has been a lot better!! He spits up but now the acid is neutralized and not burning his throat. He is so much calmer and I'm so glad we could make him feel better.
H also insists that the gas drops at every meal are helping on the back end. I'm really not convinced they are doing anything because he still gets pretty uncomfortable when passing farts but whatever. That is something I do believe is just normal and needs time to outgrow.

Besides bicycling legs, the "I Love U" massage (Google brings up videos) before feeds has helped relieve gas for my kids. Also sleeping belly to belly when someone has time to snuggle or baby wearing both get gas out effectively.
Unfortunately none of this stops gas or something from waking them up, but it does get gas out!
spicysalmonroll have you tried bicycling his legs when he gets gassy? That often helps
yea...the very first time I did it he was farting galore and every time since it doesn't seem to do anything at all.
I've also cut dairy for over a month and it doesn't seem to be helping but the doctor said to stick with it and not risk making him worse. It sucks , I want pizza so frigen bad lol
I love the newborn phase, but I can't wait until we get her formula/reflux figured out and everything is settled. I went through this with my first two too.
She is on Zantac but it's not helping enough. She also has tummy issues and you can hear gas in her belly and she just screams. I just switched her last night to Gerber Soothe formula with probiotics so I'm hoping that helps.

Is he taking poly-vi-sol? Because that does cause constipation as a side effect but not everyone is affect the same. I'm glad he doesn't have constipation!
The iron is mixed in with the formula so it may not be iron. It could always be something in the formula. But the pedi is so insistent I use it. I just got 6 more small cans, so once that is out I may start looking at other options.
It just sucks she can never get comfortable. She never can have a big enough poop to get relief. She just keeps straining and straining. And it is just so thick, like playdough. Someone on a liquid only diet shouldn't have poop that thick!
Does bicycling the legs and massaging the tummy help them poop or just help with gas?
Poop too. Last night MOTN I thought I was so smart and just pulled her legs out of the swaddle to change her diaper because the arms were still wrapped tight. Well while I had her legs tucked up against her chest (which is the last maneuver in the "I Love U" massage, but I was just doing it for a diaper change) it pushed out a HUGE poop. I caught it all with a wipe, but whoah.
For those having trouble with gas and poop, my experience is that the more backed up the system is, the less these tricks work, which really stinks. The controversial rectal thermometer/Windi trick is one to discuss with your pediatrician if it gets really bad.

The twins have issues too! we give them prebiotics. But they only half help. Other then that the midwife says thwre isn't much ypu can do other then the for mentioned ideas. Baby boy like to be held as tight as absolutely possible. And i hold their legs up when it looks like they are trying hard to toot or poop. It sucks. Also because mostly it just happens in the evening so unfortunately when mh comes home from work and then he has to deal with crying babies. It's pretty frustrating for him. I was told too that it lasts until 3months old. And then my midwife promptly said then comes teething so babies will likely always be crying or uncomfortable for one reason or another. Fun, fun!

hannahbear,IME back arching usually means upper GI discomfort while gas/constipation causes them to pull their legs up or stiffen their legs. But that's just what my kids have done, IDK if that's universal.
Does back arching always indicate tummy troubles? LO does this sometimes
probably not if it's just occasional. Mine would do it nonstop and he still holds his head thrown back 24/7. Like when he's on my chest, he refuses to put his head on me, it's always thrown back arched.
The feeding specialist we are seeing thinks C has silent reflux possibly. She is really loud and grunts and cries after eating and also makes choking sounds after she is done. Now that she says it I guess she does sleep really soundly if in the ergo, car seat or rnp but not when laying flat on her back in the arms reach co sleeper.
She recommended putting her co-sleeper at a slight incline which I just did but I'm skeptical that it will help.
Is it normal to have big bowel movements during or after every feeding? C has the opposite of constipation, she seems to poop a lot. She's primarily eating previously refrigerated (but same or prior day old) breastmilk if that matters for anything since I'm mostly still EPing. If I breastfeed her (which is still a huge struggle) she always has a large bowel movement during
katelm - studies don't support inclines helping reflux, but they sure helped here.
My first and least gassy pooped every feed. I wish DD3 would poop more. I think the gas backs up the poop for her.
Studies with newborns or in general? We have our own bed at an incline too because of DH's acid reflux/GERD. I have noticed she sleeps really well (quiet & deep sleep) in her car seat & I'm not sure it's related to incline or something else. Maybe it's because of constant car movement too
Has anyone tried gripe water for reflux? Someone suggested it and I thought it was for gas issues and not acid reflux

He's taking straight up iron drops. He does take baby d drops too though.
So I haven't had a pukey baby before but one of them throws up super scary through the nose and mouth with Insane arching. It only happens once a week maybe twice but when it does it's terrifying (like scary suction his nose out scoop his mouth out to ensure he is breathing kind of thing. ) Is this reflux or?? Just him over eating or gas or what?
