I left him. Almost in tears because I've never left him before- I've always been in the building. I'm a mess! AND MIL is going to pick him up on her way home from work so I don't have to drive back. So now I'm pumping and planning to spend the afternoon in bed binge watching Parenthood and napping.

oh goodness! Where do you go?! If I didn't go for groceries & church I would never leave the house!
So when I'm bored I get on random topics and obsessively research them. Today it's schooling. Public Ed is a big no for me, at least as things exist in my area at the moment. Sadly there's no accredited Montessori schools in my area either. I'm on the fence about homeschooling. I know I could do it well and I am confident in the social environment opportunities for homeschoolers in my area, but I think having another adult being the boss is important. My church has an amazing Catholic school, pre-K through high school which would be a brilliant compromise, but I would have to go back to my old career in a few years to afford it. Idk why this is on my mind.
Is anyone out there doing anything other than public school?
snoris you have to pay for Catholic school? I'm about 95% sure my kids will go to the Catholic school. It has a new French immersion program that I'm interested in, but then I will have to brush up on my French because they learn completely in French until grade 4 I think. It has the best rating of all the schools in my town and smaller class sizes. The only downside(which isn't huge) is that all the kids we know will be doing French immersion at the public school. But public and Catholic both have pretty much the same curriculum on core subjects. I'm not overly religious so I'm more so choosing the Catholic school for the rating and class sizes and not for the religious aspect. I'll just have to teach evolution at home. lol
On the topic of schooling I came across unschool which just blows my mind. I'm not interested in giving my kids complete free reign to learn as they feel, or not.
Aaannd my lo is not eating again. He's had 7oz in 13 hours. I'm not looking forward to tonight because he will inevitably realize he is starving and needs to eat every few hours. Ds1 turned down nursing once in his infancy. ONCE.
Yep, Catholic is considered private school in my area. The nursery program starts around $450/month which is a steal, right? But it increases dramatically through high school which is like state college tuition! Eep! I also considered homeschooling through 8th grade only. On one hand I think it's crazy to think about it already, but on the other hand I want to know my own mind on it so he will have some consistency.
I know a family who unschools. Not for me, but they love it and it works for them. And their 7 children... 😳
$450/MONTH??? jeeeeeeeesus...I pay that PER WEEK for DS1!
We have talked about "unschooling", but in reality it wouldn't really work for us. Both DH and I are adamant about NOT sending our kids to catholic school or any other religious-based program. It's just not for us and we both attended Catholic schools growing up.
The public elementary school by us is actually REALLY good, but we are more likely to send our kids to one of a few Montessori options around here! One of them being only 7min drive away from work and 15min away from home. snoris, I feel like you should check out their website and tell me if it looks good!! The Montessori option will cost us more than college tuition though...
We are most likely going to home school. There is a strong home school co-op in our area and lots of resources. We do have a good Christian school and if i went to work for them we'd get 50% off tuition (they've offered me jobs in the past so I'm reasonably sure I could get a job) but it's about 450-500 a month without the discount (cheaper than daycare around here ironically) . class sizes are small. It's currently pre-k through 8th with online programs for 9-12th.
My in laws think we should send DS to pre-k at least. And go from there but my concern is the transition from home to pre-k and then potentially back to home.

Our decision rests largely on what the housing markets do over the next few years and DD being ready for kinder or first grade. (We can do private kinder through our center)
If we stay in our existing house, DD will be going to private school. The elementary ranks low/average for both API and on great schools, middle is average/well performing, and highschool is underperforming. If we're going to put kids into private school, they'll go for their whole career vs. just specific years, since I don't feel we're doing them any favors by moving them in/out of a system.
Ideally, we'll find a house in our target area (hello 5 miles away) that's in a different district and all the schools are consistently top performers. I would rather put the extra cost of tuition towards a house. Unfortunately, those 5 miles will push our housing purchase price well into the seven-figure range for a fixer.
So once DD is out of daycare, that's an additional chunk of change that can go to either house payments or private school.
I would gladly pay $500/month per kid for private, but we'd be looking at closer to 3x that amount.
Yay Montessori babycaps! I'd love to look. Send me a link! I would do Montessori in a heartbeat but we have one program near us and I'll probably look into it and decide for myself, but I hear it's not the legit kind 😢
Is this where I go to apply for asshat of the year?
This morning I sent out a pic of baby I and a "hope you are well" and my bestie responds with "having a miscarriage". And I just sent her a pic of my newborn. Wtf.
Blake was super awesome and stayed home today to give me a break so I could finally get some sleep, and I'm having epic insomnia. I'm so tired my eyes won't stop watering, so I'm just laying in bed, but I wish I could actually sleep!

I'm sorry for your friend. Don't beat yourself up though, you had no idea. At least you trusts you enough to tell you the truth.
We're in a similar boat with schools, k3am, though we get to knock a zero off that housing price - yikes!
The schools we are zoned for are terrible. If we moved just a few miles east or west we could get into good schools districts. East, the houses are overpriced and mostly historic (not my thing; I like move-in ready houses) and if we go west the commute sucks. I'm hoping we can arrange for them to attend either a magnet or our non-designated school. Our jobs are flexible enough that we can do drop off and pick up, but it could still end up being a royal PITA.

Omg, how awful for her!
😭 My heart is broken for her. I just know what it's like and it's the worst ever. And she's like my sister. I'm truly heartbroken for her and I wish I could make it better.
I waited too long to feed her because she wasn't fussy at all and then she just screamed when she got near my boob. Blake had to rock her to sleep and then she immediately latched when he laid her next to me. Sigh. I need to pay attention to the clock more for her feedings.
Schools here are pretty terrible, but unless I magically am able to get a job we can't afford better. We'll probably move before then anyways. Joys of apartment living is it's easy(er) to move.
snoris how do they do it(unschool)? I just don't think I as a kid would have found the motivation to learn anything.
I'm certainly not an expert but have come across it a bit in studying child development and education. If anyone knows better, please correct me if I'm wrong. From my understanding you would follow the child's natural interests. You know how kids kind of naturally latch on to topics and get obsessed? Like, suddenly kids will be randomly really into Vikings or princesses or Alpacas. So you take the interest (alpacas) and teach them about mammals, take them to an alpaca farm, maybe try their hand and knitting with some alpaca wool, learn about the diet of alpacas, etc. Sneak in some math with measuring their food (idk just a random example) or measuring the length of their ear, add in some reading by reading instructions for alpaca wool knitting, geography by learning where alpacas naturally live, etc. In the end, you would still have covered all the basics but taken a different route. They also may be able to apply skills better to life bc they learned, say, division, in the real world rather than slicing Susie's pie in a word problem. It is definitely how learning took place before the invention of schools and likely is more engaging since it follows the interests of the child rather than the confines of textbooks. However it takes a ton of creativity and effort on the part of the teacher and some important things may be overlooked unintentionally. Has the potential to be awesome.

Oh no! I'm sure she realizes you didn't know. Sorry for her loss!

See that makes sense to me snoris. All these 'day in the life's' that I read had the kids doing whatever; computer, playing outside, in their rooms without a ton of parent involvement so I just wasn't sure where and how the learning takes place.
I'm so frustrated with feeding this kid. Why does he refuse the bottle when he's starving? If I offer before he is truly hungry he won't even put it in his mouth, if I'm a minute too late he is too hungry to eat properly, he gulps and starts screaming. I'm so angry at my body, all I want to do when he gets like that is put him on my boob. F'n Cancer, I hate you.
