We had an u/s and appointment with the kidney doctor today. M's kidney grew a little bit since the last appointment (he was a month old) but is less than 1/2 the size of his good kidney. He still has stage 5 reflux on that side. Since his kidney is functioning and growing a little they don't want to cause any more damage by attempting surgery. Besides, at this point surgery would not improve growth or function. We will reassess after he turns 1. They said there is no need for more u/s until then because they don't expect any change. M will need surgery at some point to address the reflux but they will keep him on antibiotics to prevent infection until he is big enough to handle major surgery. It may take a couple years before they can fix it. They will have to move his ureter (the tube between kidney and bladder) so that it enters his bladder in a different location. They went on to talk about living with only 1 kidney and risks associated with it, which tells me they don't have much confidence in the function of a small kidney.
I'm sad. I was hoping the measurements last time were a fluke and we would get good news today. I hate playing the waiting game. I want to fix this and not be worried about meds every day or worry about infection every time he gets a fever or doesn't feel well. I don't want him to need surgery or grow up feeling different. I hate that they call it a birth defect. I have a lot of feels and this will likely be the point in which I need to seek help for PPD.
