Here's my question: if you use wake times, how long is LO up and how old? DD3's sleep cues are unreliable and I am trying to peg a good wake time. I had been going by 30 minutes from when she actually woke up (she sleep eats a lot so it ends up being more like an hour from start of feed), but that is clearly too short at almost 6 weeks.

My babies are now 8 weeks old and don't really have naps. They eat and are happy for about 2 hours. (Baby girl takes a hour to eat)(baby boy is more easy going and will play on the floor mat while sister finishes) after the play time they get tired but they don't nap especially not in their crib. But will sleep in arms. We try and put them down when they fall asleep but they wake within 5-10 mins. And basically we do this until its bottle time or we give in and let them sleep in our arms so they can get some sleep and not get over tired. Over tired babies, I have found, are not fun babies! Getting real naps in is really hard on our side.

E is just about 9 weeks and he still naps a ton. He's never awake more than like 1.5-2 hours at a time. He literally just took a 3 hour nap right now.
I don't decide that it's nap time, or put him for a nap or anything like that. I just hold him and play on the floor with him until he wants to fall asleep. He falls asleep on me or his Boppy pillow. I usually transfer him to the Boppy so I can get things done and he doesn't mind. I like the Boppy because it allows me to put him in his side and get time off the flat spot. Sleeps about an hour or two until he wakes up starving.

Eta- Im sure daycare will start a more structured nap schedule or I would if I were going to be a SAHM. But for now he calls the shots lol
DD will be 8 weeks old tomorrow. She still sleeps a lot. She mostly falls back to sleep after she eats, but she usually has 2 awake times per day when she is up for about an hour or two. I feel like she is maybe sleeping too much?
She either sleeps while I hold her, in her swing, or in the car seat (if we are out and about). I need to work on crib naps but I've been lazy about it.
Same as spicysalmonroll. LO naps when he wants. He has a fairly predictable schedule though. From 8p-8a he has 0 real wake time. He'll wake up twice to eat, but he nurses for 5-10min and he's goes right back down. If I don't engage him, he will lay contently and talk to himself til he falls back asleep until about 930. Then we are up until noonish. Then he will nap til about 3 or 4. Sometimes he falls asleep around 6, but if not we start bedtime routine at 7 because His Highness is a real jerk if he's not in bed around 8. Idk how he knows, but he knows smh.
ETA-he's 6 weeks tomorrow
Your newborn and my 1 year old had a remarkably similar schedule, minus the morning nap and evening naplet.
Like elm1214, I need to work on crib naps. He sleeps great in someone's arms, or in his car seat, rock n play and MamaRoo - but he can be fast asleep and will wake up as I set him in the crib.
Anyone have tips on how to get them used to crib sleeping?

Our daycare doesn't do a structure nap time until 1 year old. They let them sleep whenever they want.
I cannot figure out naps. DD is so awake during the day so I never know when the best time to try to get her to nap is. Right now she just sleeps whenever I put her in the car or the wrap with the occasional nap laying on me. I just tried to put her in her crib so I could start making dinner and now she's wide awake staring at me and trying to break out of the swaddle. How long can I leave her in the crib if she is awake but not crying?

Third time mom opinion - until she falls asleep or cries for more than a few minutes.

DS definitely doesn't sleep as much as he should at this age (just over 5 weeks), but we're working on it. Currently, his "bedtime" (when we all go to bed) is 10:30, but sometimes it takes us until 11 for him to be sound asleep in his crib. Then, he's up around 2-2:30, and it usually takes us about 30 min to change, re-swaddle, nurse, and put back in the crib. Then he's up around 5:30-6am, and it takes about 15-30 min to do our routine. Unfortunately, he ALWAYS wakes up an hour after this one, around 7-7:30am. We've been trying different things at this point - today I nursed him until he was content and then DH took him into the living room for a while. He didn't fall back asleep, so DH gave him a bottle at 8 and then he slept until 10. We usually get two solid (1.5-2.5hr) naps during the day, with a few catnaps while he's being worn or in the car or stroller. He can stay awake eating/playing for 2 hours max

This is us too. If I need to set her down I either put her in her crib or swing, but she is juuuuuuust starting to show signs of consolidating her sleep at 7 weeks. I think we are still a bit off from structured naps, especially bc she spends a fair amount of time in the Moby doing school runs, grocery trips, etc

My DD likes a 730 or 8 bedtime, and sleeps straight through the night (she wakes to eat, but goes right back to sleep). She usually wakes up around 730 and eats and is alert for a while, then has another solid stretch of sleep until about 930.

DD3 will naturally do her long stretch any time after 7 and seems to sleep better if it starts before 8. It's hard to pinpoint her wake-up time right now. She'll go right back down after her night feeds until anywhere between 5 and 8. In the past few days she's been waking up extra for...who knows...gas? pacifier? spit up? Wonder Week? over tiredness? swaddle hatred?
For naps she was doing generally longer ones - 1-2 hours with an hour of feeding and wake time in between. Now we are down to 45 minute naps in the main with one longer one still hanging on. If she's like my bigs these will turn into short naps until we are solidly on a two nap schedule (6-8 months) any day now. Sigh...

Ds is almost 7 weeks and takes a lot of naps. Eat, play for an hour, sleep. He was sleeping for about 2 hrs each time, but lately it has been less and gets woken up by gas or something. Maybe he's trying to condense? We'll see. If he's in the car or we are out and about he basically sleeps the whole time.

She might surprise you and put herself to sleep.
Unfortunately she did not fall asleep. After about half an hour she decided she was over being in the crib. At least I got a little free time. I feel bad that she's not getting enough sleep and I don't know how to fix it.
I wish my kid slept in the car. He screams instead.
I have the most success if I plan for us to be in the car when she is already asleep. She hates to be stopped though. So, good thing I live in a city with a colossal traffic problem......

Until she starts crying. That's still my theory with DD and she'll be 2 next month.
meagpt22 does that include feeding time as awake time?
I didn't start using this guide with DD until later. So I included feeding time since she was awake with feeds. With DS I only include the time he's awake eyes open, since sometimes he sleep eats.

same here! Bed time at 8 and he sleeps til 7am. Waking to eat twice but goes immediately back to sleep. I feel so lucky for that when I read on here some people's baby is up all night.
Moms with older kids- how do you get your baby to sleep? I feel like I don't have time to devote to putting her to sleep every couple hours. Plus, kids are loud.
EllieT sometimes babies just start sleeping better when they are ready..despite parents trying everything. I will say DD never followed the nap lengths. She was ready at the "right" times but was a cat napper from early on. I used to joke that she was a broken newborn bc she was so alert!

This was my older two. Once I could do just two naps a day they were longer. By that point both kids were also falling asleep on their own, which helps.

Well, this thread is depressing me.
DS slept from 11pm-2:45am, but after that wakeup he was up an hour after I got him fed and back to sleep, 3 times in a row. We were all up for good around 9:30am and aside from an hour-long nap while I was wearing him and a 15 min nap a little while ago, he's been awake. I've tried it all, but the only almost-sure thing is wearing him.
This thread is depressing me too. My baby make lots of grunting noises all night so it is hard to co-sleep next to her & get any restful sleep. Then I am up with her anywhere between 1.5-2.5 hours in the middle of the night for the 1 but very long feeding. She takes so long to eat and then so long to settle and also her acid reflux so I have to keep her upright for so long after. And then she only sleeps another hour or two after before getting out for another feeding. The second half of the night is always way worse than the first half. Definitely sleeps much sounder the first half of the night. If I try putting her down too soon the second half of the night the grunting start so loud again. So basically the sleep I am getting is really bad quality sleep
