I actually already found an ENT in the area that discusses ties on their website and how important it is to have them corrected to promote good breastfeeding. My insurance doesn't require referrals, so depending on what the LC/ped says, I could try to make an appt directly with the ENT as long as they don't require referrals to see a new patient.
The only issue with an ENT is sometimes they only deal with anterior ties and completely miss a posterior or deep tie (simply because they don't know how to look for them). If you have that experience, you can always look into a paediatric dentist in your area.
At least that was my experience. I didn't bother with the dentist as our breastfeeding relationship was over before DS got clipped and if he does have a posterior tie it's not affecting his speech currently.SaveSave
LadyNymeria I believe from prior posts you might live in my area, not sure how close but I can PM you the dentist we used for DS2s lip and posterior tongue tie.

I would very much appreciate that! I think we're somewhat close too and if he does have one I'd certainly be willing to drive a bit to see a good dr/dentist for revision!

The past two days C has fed 15/16 times. I think the lowest has been 11 times in 24 hours so far at just over 5 weeks old. When do they start slowing down a little? I feel like I can't leave the house because he is attached to the boob.

This is one of the only positives I've found of supplementing with formula. Every once in a while I just give her the formula so I can either a) leave the house or b) pump a little so we have some extra that H or MIL can feed her when I need to sleep.
K went through this the first week we were home, and they were marathon nursing sessions. It turned out I wasn't producing enough, so she was expending a lot of energy trying to get as much as she needed. Does your supply seem good, even with all those nursing sessions? Save

This is where we're at, too. E will be 5 weeks tomorrow. I know C was like this, too and I have no idea how long it lasted. It does get better; I think knowing that makes me a little more relaxed about this all. It won't last forever, even if it seems like it sometimes.

He is gaining weight well so I think my supply is fine. It took awhile to get back up to birth weight but since then he is up about an ounce a day.
I'm trying not to supplement since we think he might have a dairy allergy and we would have to get the expensive formula. Also, while the situation was much different I supplemented early with DS1 and gave up breastfeeding pretty quickly. This time I would like to make it until I'm back at work, or at least around the holidays.
NJgirl84, there is a growth spurt somewhere at 4-6 weeks so you could be in the middle of that. As far as generally decreasing from the 10-12 times per day, IIRC I think that tends to happen in a couple months. I think I was still nursing DS about every 2 hours until he started daycare at 12 weeks.
NJgirl84 ah, I see. K is eating about 10 times a day right now, sometimes 12 or 13. I can understand your concerns about supplementing for sure, as I already find myself tempted quite often to just pop a bottle of formula in her mouth rather than nurse and then give her a little formula and pump to try and keep my supply up.
pismoduo its not easy. I started supplementing with DS1 in the first few days since we had trouble getting him to latch and his bilirubin levels kept increasing. When I saw how much he sucked back vs what I was pumping it was heartbreaking. DH had to go back to work early and without help it was so stressful to be pumping so often and I started slacking. By 2 weeks I barely was getting enough for 1 feeding and switched completely. I'm always amazed at the momma's that EP.

Oh yea, if my MIL wasn't living with us and helping out I might have tapped out by now, when it was at its most frustrating point.
K had weight gain issues and she was getting a little more jaundiced as well, which is why we ended up adding the formula. I'm still struggling to get my supply higher because I'm still having to give her between 1 and 2 oz after nursing at each feeding, sometimes more if she's been feeding more frequently. Honestly, at this point I don't think I'll ever get to a point of being able to exclusively feed her breast milk.
I posted on the breastfeeding board, but figured I'd put it here too.
DS tends to not flare his lips out properly when latching, which we are working on. But in the meantime...
The bad latch has caused a red spot on my nipple that hurts when nursing. It kind of looks like the start of a small blood blister. We had been using a nipple shield on that side but R suddenly stopped latching well with the shield in the past couple days so we stopped using it, and the spot showed up over last night.
Other than changing nursing positions to change up where DS puts pressure on my nipple, any suggestions for helping it heal?
My left is more latch friendly so thankfully this is only an issue on the right so far.

Could you pump on that side instead of nurse until it heals, or at least a few sessions to give it a break? Not sure if you introduced a bottle yet or not.

That's a good idea. We have been giving pumped milk once in a while already so I could do that no problem.
It already feels a lot better after skipping a nursing session on that side and pumping instead, so if I keep that up for the day or weekend, I'm hoping it heals quick.
LadyNymeria you can put Bactrin on it to help heal. You could also get a prescription ointment which is what Dr prescribed me to heal when I got M's tongue tie snipped.
My letdown is so freakin fast. Poor baby can not keep up! Even if I unlatch during letdown and let it spray into a towel her suck is so strong she gets so much milk at once! There's nothing I can really do about this right?? Im assuming as she gets bigger she'll be able to handle the flow better.

I have the same problem. My oldest dealt with it much better than C. He's constantly gulping and choking. He does a lot better nursing in bed when I can recline a lot. Here's what kellymom suggests: kellymom.com/bf/got-milk/supply-worries/fast-letdown/

I had the same problem with my first and it's happening again. My son eventually just got used to it but in meantime I tried positions where gravity was in his favor (modified football hold where he was actually sitting up, laid back nursing and side lying) also would do what you are already doing-unlatch and use a towel (or a cup). I am taking LO off frequently and burping and that seems to help. It's a pain! Sometimes I wish I could just latch her on and relax.
