I woke up Wednesday morning a little after 3am with contractions I couldn't sleep through. By 3:30 I gave up trying and got up. I found one of the Discovery channels was showing a block of childbirth reality shows and I watched that on my yoga ball for three hours, contractions mild to moderate and holding steady at about ten minutes apart. I also intermittently tidied the house very quietly so as not to wake husband and toddler.
I took a shower after six but it didn't give too much relief. When I got out I found my husband agonizing over his fantasy football team, Wednesday is waiver day and he takes it very seriously. I told him it was probably baby day so he emailed work. I left him there and ate some breakfast. DD woke up about then and we shared my cereal.
I don't know why but my contractions slowed a bit in the morning. I had my weekly ob appointment at eleven and my doctor did NOT take my contractions seriously. He said I was still a good 1cm and told me he'd see my in a week to talk monitoring and induction because I'd be past my EDD by then. I told him I'd see him sooner than that and he laughed.
My in-laws arrived to watch DD about two thirty and by then my contractions were every four to five minutes but only 25 seconds long. The pain was definitely increasing and I just walked around the house because it was too hot and muggy to go outside. DH and I left the house about 4pm to get to the hospital before rush hour kicked in. I figured I'd rather walk the hospital halls than labor in the car any longer than necessary.
Turned out no walking was needed. I was admitted immediately and by 6pm I was in bed with my epidural in place. Right after the nurses swapped to the night shift the baby's heart beat dropped so they rolled me and gave me oxygen. Another cervical check and I'd jumped to a 10. They called my OB and he arrived pretty quickly. He was definitely surprised to see me. I said "Long time no see" and he said "when did you get here?" and "I guess I won't see you next week". They moved me into position and I started pushing about 8pm but the baby's heart rate dropped again. I guess he really wanted out quickly. They used the vacuum and he was delivered at 8:10pm. The placenta came out without my even noticing (last time he had to rip it out in chunks) and baby got to nurse for over an hour right away. I had almost no pain, great epidural. I couldn't believe my luck at such an easy delivery.
I barely slept and it took hours for my heart rate to calm down. And getting out of bed to pee a dozen times sucked. But he's already latching well and it's so good to have an outside baby.
