Since solids are going to going up sooner or later for all of us I thought it might be useful to have a thread where we can discuss stuff related to it.
Oh and since I'm just re reading this I realized I might not have been clear. I was thinking this could be ongoing like our breastfeeding thread haha like we ask questions as they come up and stuff.
When DS meets my criteria (6 months, sits unassisted, etc), I will just toss him bits of what we're eating.
The end.
Pretty much this. For DS we just pulled out whole ingredients from what we were making. Lots of sweet potatoes, avocado, banana. Things that are smushy and require little to no prep work.
Yup! What they said above! But I am PRETTY sure he got a taste of banana from DS1 this morning.
Add baby I to the Mister Grabby Club. Today is the first day he went for the food on my plate - salad (yay!) - so he's officially met the interest criteria.
So I didn't give A baby cereal at all- he didn't have rice or oatmeal until he could eat the regular stuff. I hadn't planned on giving it to Cam either but I'm really bad at remembering to give his vitamin to him. So I'm wondering if I should go ahead and do the cereal. Thoughts?

I will give the iron supplement. I'm sure they will recommend it at our well baby check. Vitamin D was not recommended to me with DD1 (3 years again) so except for a few times, DD2 has never gotten it because I forget
We were never instructed to give DD an iron supplement. But with guidelines changing, who knows what they'll recommend for DS. If the pedi recommends it, we'll do it. We're good at following instructions from medical professionals.

pedi recommends the iron, but I dont do it. Partially because I'm lazy and they made it really hard to get prescriptions filled here, but mostly because natural iron is much more easily absorbed than a supplement. I definitely pay attention to offering more iron rich foods. DS1 loves sucking the juice out of a strip of steak even before he had teeth.
So my pedi office has changed thier solids recommendation. They said the AAP recommends 4 months now based off of a study that showed 5 year olds that were exposed early had less food allergies than those who were exposed later. I guess I'll be roasting a puréeing some butternut squash this weekend to see how it goes. No mention of iron supplement so I will have to call back about that

When did they say it changed? Didn't it just change this year to 6 months?

If she mentioned when, I don't remember. I do think it seemed like it was recent.. My pedi said she's fine with everything except peanut butter early -makes her nervous.I guess since she has seen a lot of scary reactions to it.

But I think peanut butter is one of the allergenic foods they recommend giving before 6 months! My lo has been exposed to it already, but he hasn't actually ingested it yet.

Ya, I don't know - she told me a story about a 18 month old that had an Anaphylaxis reaction to it in her office long ago. I'm not super worried about it really with my kids. H & I do not have any big allergies to anything other then penicillin and we don't really see it in our families either. And PS - I have no idea what I would do if my child had that type of reaction to anything - it's not like they give you epi pens just incase. Anyone know the answer?

911.
My kid has already had peanut butter and Thai peanut sauce. I figure it takes twice to really have a reaction if they're going to, so hopefully we're in the clear!

PB allergy reaction builds over time. The initial reaction may be a little as a bit of diarrhea or rash or hives. Over time the immunoglbulins mount a response. And in case of Anaphylaxis, call 911.
Because BP has such a "high allergy" potential, it will be within our first 10 foods!
For families that have a history of severe peanut allergies, a lot of pedis will allow/offer a challenge in their office. If something goes wrong, you've got access to medical treatment.

So, was this an 18 m/o trying it for the first time in her office for some reason? Or a child with a severe allergy that somehow randomly got a hold of PB in her office? I feel like her story doesn't make sense or is leaving some details out.
