What does your husband like about Kai? The sound? The length?
These are my favorite boy names, but they are a far cry from Kai.

I'm including 1 and 2 syllables as well, and included the SSA rankings. Alasdair- Scottish form of Alexander, not in top 1000. Ambrose- Means "immortal", not in top 1000. Anders- Scandinavian form of Andreas, #794. Benedict- Means "blessed", not in top 1000. Bertram- Means "bright raven", not in top 1000. Caius- Possibly means "to rejoice", similar to Kai in sound, but a better and more uncommon name, he could call him Cai as a nn, not in top 1000. Conall- Means "strong wolf", not in top 1000. Eamonn- Irish form of Edmund, not in the top 1000. Einarr- Means "lone warrior", not in the top 1000. Eoin- Gaelic form of John, not in the top 1000. Ivor- Means "yew, bow; warrior", not in top 1000. Justus- Means "just", #866. Leander- Means "lion man", not in top 1000. Lir- Means "the sea", not in top 1000. Lorcan- Means "little fierce one", not in top 1000. Nicodemus- Means "victory of the people", not in the top 1000. Rordan- Means "little poet king", not in top 1000. Tadhg- Means "poet", not in top 1000. Theron- Means "to hunt", not in top 1000. Torin- Means "chief", not in top 1000. Zephyr- Means "west wind", not in top 1000. There is also Zephyros.

billyhorrible the length mostly and the sound. He has a tendency to gravitate towards short names. There's also a pro surfer named Kai that he watches a lot which is where he got the name from.

If he's into the surfer names, what about Laird or Kelly? I know they're old school, but they're more interesting than some of the names of the younger guys.
Yes, they're still pronounced the same. Ciaran is the correctly spelled original Gaelic version (minus the accent mark, which is fine to not bother with). Kieran is an anglicized variant.
ETA: I would also say the Kieran spelling is trendy.
I like: Kai: If it's too short, have you considered Malachi? Colin: I'm assuming it works with your surname? Kieran: The only issue I see is that I think pronunciation could be a headache. You can compare here, the English one with the surname Clark and the other ones. Nathaniel
