I know a few here cloth diaper. I have TONs of questions and am getting overwhelmed. What did you use for NB days? I registered for a handful of lil Joey AIOs by rumparooz, some thirsties size one covers, and I bought a ton of prefolds and workhorses to start NB days. I know that I only want to use AIOs for when they are older- I am looking at thirsties natural AIOs anyone use those? I'm also considering Best bottoms with the snap in liners, as I can get them second hand from my SIL. What did you use for NB days? What do you use now? What are your favorites?
We have 2 in cloth right now. I'll give you my opinions but everyone is different as is every baby.
Newborn: lil joey- we used them with O almost exclusively. They have pros and cons. Pro: they are AIO and make changes easy, they fit as low as 6# so good if you have a small lo, price-wise they are middle of the road, I also think they have really cute prints. Cons: Most los will outgrow them quickly either in fit or absorbancy and because they are so thick they take awhile to dry. (I made my own liners for them to add absorbancy and it worked well this time around).
My favorite AIO newborn or otherwise is Blueberry (Simplex) organic AIO. The nb will fit for awhile and they have a little tongue so they dry a lot faster than lil joeys. They are also more pricey.
Our stash consists of a variety of things right now, lots of RaR (which I hate stuffing now), workhorses, prefolds, fst (flour sack towels) and covers. I would highly recommend workhorses, they are quick and also economical. We used them at all ages so far.
I think a lot of the diaper choice depends on you are your lifestyle with lo. Will lo be going to daycare? If so usually a AIO is usually best for the workers for ease. Do you like trying different things (different folds with prefolds or fst) or do you just want to slap a diaper on and go.
I use thirsties AIOs, but haven't tried the natural fiber ones yet.
There's a CD board here...we/they answer lots of specific questions if needed.
With M we did lots of pockets (BG 4.0s) and they are a good quality diaper. But now we just don't have time to stuff pockets so we are going all AIO. Mostly BG freetimes, BB simplex, and the thirsties. Best bottoms too (they fit small but are not good for nb poop).
I had a handful of THX AIO which are a knock off of little joeys. I got mine used, but you can get them through co-ops for ~$5. They were nice to have for getting out and about. We used a cloth wipe to increase the absorbency and get a little more use out of them. They worked for ~3 weeks. I had no interest in changing her every 30-45min, so we stopped using them.
I loved prefolds or workhorses and the duo covers. We're not using the size small prefolds nearly as much as the nb because she out wets them too fast. The workhorses are still going strong though.
I love our Nicki's AIOs. We have the ultimate - which is microfiber, and the bamboo. Both work well and started fitting her around 8 lbs. We have a couple of Freetimes that are easy and trim, but I'm to cheap to buy more. I have ordered some Pororo flap style AIOs that I'm hoping to like as much as the Freetimes.
Even if you stay with AIOs and prefolds/fitteds, you may want to have some extra inserts/doublers around for when you need extra absorbency. Hemp/cotton blend or bamboo are my favorites.
If you end up wanting to use some of the China cheapies, co-ops can save you a ton.
