Yeah I don't see us doing elf on the shelf. If dd asked for it when she's older I might consider it.
ETA: thought about it more.... maybe when dd is 4 or so. I could see her being really excited for it.
We started when S was 2. My theory was that it would be more believable if it had been there as long as he could remember. He doesn't remember not having Bernard watching him in December. I feel like if we had started later he would wonder why Santa suddenly felt the need to spy. Just my thoughts on it.
I think we are going to do the elf on the shelf. It does look like a lot of work but the things you can make him/her do are hilarious.
My dad is from Dublin and every year he transforms into "Danny the Elf" Similar to elf on the shelf but Danny calls the house to find out how good the kids have been. He puts on his accent super thick. It's hilarious and I can't wait for him to start those calls with DD.
Yesterday we went Santa shopping.TRU/BRU is having a pretty good sale on a good few items. H and I picked up an activity table, an activity cube (you guys listed one similar above) a Peppa pig backpack and a little people tractor with farm animals. My mum got DD the full barn yard so the tractor will go with that I think we are done with Santa presents.

When we were kids we were told that my grandfather was close personal friends with Santa. So Grampie would put in calls to Santa periodically to update him on our behaviour. One year we called bullshit, so he got on the phone and had Santa come to the house. Now all of the great grandkids are being told the same thing, but it's not the same for my kids since we live so far away now.
