katelm @remylove I am also trying to figure out how to eliminate my MOTN pump without giving myself mastitis. One suggestion I was given is to gradually decrease the amount of time at the pump and hopefully supply overnight will down- regulate. I always pump right before bed so I am as empty as possible.

Ok ladies, question here. My little one typically chows down on a 4 oz bottle that's been left out at room temp. The past few times we've warmed a 4oz bottle that was in the fridge we've had some issues. She eats about half of it and then seems to not want it (she's acting like she's still hungry but isn't really eating). Maybe it's not warm enough? How do you warm up your bottles? Do you notice a difference in how they take them?
Me (30) MH (32) Dx: MFI (low all the things) M. 10/11. TTC Since 01/14 IUI#1-3(Letrozole + Trigger) = BFN Second Opinion. Changed RE's. IVF 09/15 Long Lupron 12R/9M/8F, Transferred 1=BFN. 4 frosties. FET #1 12/15 Transferred 1 (3 still on ice)

My kids only take a body temp warm bottle. Due to that we use the expensive Kiinde Kozii warmer.

Yeah I wondered about that. My husband's theory is she'll only take it when it's expressed within the last like 2 days. He thinks she won't take it once it's completly seperated. (Medela says you can keep it in the fridge up to 8 days). Ever heard of that?

Does it taste like soap if it is older? High lipase would cause that after time and cause her to possibly mind older milk. Not everyone has high lipase. I think @suesposa does?
But for us heating has always helped the girls take a full feed.

Uh oh. Havent tasted it! It smells normal, but i guess I need to taste it.

Yes this is exactly what I'm trying to do, so far so good
damn. I do 10-12 min on each side and the last few minutes are usually nothing coming out. lol
I learned I had the settings mixed up! I tried new settings and it seemed to go much faster.
Were you pumping the whole time in letdown mode? It's confusing that it doesn't start in letdown mode & that you have to hit the button and then hit it again later to stop. When I was EPing & reading into strategies I actually learned the fastest cycle & strongest vacuum didn't necessarily lead to more milk. You have to play with the settings & see what works for you, it may be slower cycle & mid vacuum. Hopefully you can eventually get to a point where you are pumping only 10-15 and getting at least 4oz. Power pumping really helped me and so has mothers milk tea.
Lately my supply has started to decrease because I'm breastfeeding more (like most of the time now). She doesn't totally empty the breast and sometimes only does one side. Then she gets pissed when milk won't come right away and doesn't always suck long enough for a second letdown. One benefit to EPing is it kept my supply really good & me on a specific schedule with both breasts being emptied at once and equally etc. Seems like now my body is trying to regulate to what she's doing at the breast & it's confused

I wasn't in letdown the whole time, but I totally thought fastest cycle and highest suction = more milk. NOPE! I only seem to get 4+ oz first thing in the morning - otherwise it's about 3oz. I haven't figured out the sweet spot just yet, it seems to take me 25 minutes on average (though MOTN and first morning pump seem longer).
How do you know your supply decreased? Does she seem satisfied?
hannahbear based on my pumping output for times I do pump. I used to get quite a bit more than she needs per pumping session in like 8-10 min total & now it's exactly what she needs ...no extra in a 15-20 min pump session.
She seems mad at the breast because it isn't coming out fast like it used to (aka oversupply) and she has to work for it. So she gets a bit aggressive with shaking her head and pulling like where is the milk dang it! It's like she doesn't know how to trigger another letdown. I know she hasn't gotten a full feedings worth when she does that because of the weighted feed I'm doing at home (we still have the scale)
So I guess what I'm saying is I liked having an oversupply and not enjoying this decrease/regulated thing.

I mean you're shaking it right and not just feeding it separated? Mine separates within 6 hours! I just shake it up and he takes it. 8 days is a no, everything I've ever read or been told is 3-4 days fridge.

The rule I've heard is 6-6-6 (6 hours at room temperature, 6 days in the fridge, 6 months in the freezer).

I'm so irritated at my LC. She told me I was definitely 24mm for flanges, maybe even 27mm. But she never measured! I guess because my boobs are big, she just assumed? This whole time I've been second guessing the flange sizing, and I keep seeing everywhere that the flanges can impact your output. YEP. Just got 21mm flanges, and like 3 minutes into this pump I can already tell it's going way better than normal. Big boobs and little nips!

Yes! Medela has a page on this. I assumed that there was only one size flange but then I stumbled upon that. I measured my nipple and realized I needed to go down a size.

Yeah the 8 days seemed long to me so I haven't done that. This was 4 days. And yes I warm and swirl it to mix the seperated parts

Yes yes, swirl it, not shake! Shaking apparently breaks down the protein bonds.

I know I'm late to this, but just wanted to encourage smelling refrigerated milk before giving it. I think my milk smells sour after like 2 days of being in the fridge, even though guidelines say it can stay for much longer. Now, if I won't be giving it within a day, I just freeze it right away.

Thanks for all the thoughts and ideas ladies. I've discovered that my milk has a 3 day window in the fridge. After the 3 days it starts to smell off. I had thought it just smelled like milk (as someone who doesn't drink milk), so I did a test. I pumped on Sunday and smelled it each day. I've discovered it doesn't really smell like anything to me until day 4 when it smelled like milk. So I'm guessing it's starting to sour at that point. I'm hopeful my milk from the freezer will be ok since I freeze it right after pumping.

H asked me the other day how long I plan to pump. I told him if I make it to a year, I'd be thrilled, 6 months and I'd be happy. But right now, I think I'm just taking it a day at a time. Some days are fine, other days I'm ready to throw my pump out the window.
I'd like to go to a year or a little shy of it if I have a freezer stash to close the gap.
I'm doing an ironman in the spring and will have to pump twice while on the bike. That should be..... fun.
Oh man, good luck with the iron man! I saw a picture a few weeks back of a lady pumping while running a marathon. I am blown away by the strength and dedication. This makes me realize that if there are women pumping during competitions, surely I can keep going on normal days.
I'll just try to keep building up my stash so I can stop short of a year. I think I have about 500oz so far which is about 2.5 weeks of bottles.
Last time I quit pumping around 11months and kept BF until about 13 months when DD weaned. If I can do something similar I'd be happy, but I don't want to stress myself out this time.

I hope to pump until we are down to morning and night nursing, which I hope will happen shortly after DD3 turns one. It happened that way before, but we'll see if DD3 wants that.
