I'm looking for opinions as to whether it is worth putting my baby on my dental insurance for the 2017 calendar year or whether I should just wait until 2018. We have insurance open enrollment right now and dr google says baby should visit a dentist between 6 months - 1 year. Wut? My hope is to just wait until January 2018 when she will be 1.5 yrs old because it seems silly to pay higher insurance for 12 months for a visit this young. Thoughts?

When ds1 was born, we did not add him on dental. It was going to be crazy expensive. DH switched jobs when he turned 1, and his new one has dental cost lumped in with medical, so we just pay a family rate for everything.
We started bringing ds1 to the dentist for check ups at 2 yrs, which is when the pedi recommened.
If you really felt she needed a cleaning prior to 18m, you could always pay for that out of pocket - it's not all that expensive. Any serious mouth issues or problems may be seen by the pedi or a specialist rather than a dentist anyway.

Our pediatric dentist wanted us to bring in DD2 at 18 mo. but we decided to wait until 2 (which is what the pediatrician suggests). We took DD1 at 18 mo. to get her lip tie checked and they did a cleaning. It did not seem that helpful.
FWIW, my dentist suggested the first appointment should be 2-3 years old because younger kids don't usually let the dentist do much anyway.
This for us, too. My understanding is that the appointments prior to 2-3 years old are just to get the kid more comfortable with the dentist stuff. My SIL's youngest started tagging along with big brother way early & at 4 was still scared, while my kids were 2 & 3 before they went & have never had problems.

I'm waiting until closer to 3. My DD just turned two and I already know it's going to be dramatic. I want to wait until she's old enough to understand/remember a bribe. The kid wouldn't even get a school picture done..like not even a bad picture. So the dentist..I think DH will be in charge.

I'm not even attempting with my 2 yr old either. I'm just making sure to brush her teeth really well.
Just took my 2 year old to dentist today. She just got a cleaning and some fluoride applied to front teeth. She screamed the whole time. Since insurance here in CA makes pediatric dental mandatory with insurance plans, I believe, and check ups are included, it's not a question for me. I do understand not wanting to pay extra premiums otherwise though.
