TTMA: pregnancy weight gain and emotions

A lot of good advice here. In my early teens I struggled with an eating disorder and continued to be pretty weight focused even after I managed to get into a healthier mindset. Sorry if I missed this, but have you talked with your MW about your concerns and history? My MW with my last pregnancy asked if I was going to be okay with being weighed and suggested we could either do less frequent checks or they could write down the number and only mention it if it became a concern. I opted to try knowing and it turned out okay although every time the middle digit of my weight went up I struggled.

I think hiding your scale is a great idea. I had to make mine difficult to access and limit myself to checking only once a week.

And seriously, maternity pants are the best. Wearing clothes that are comfortable and make you feel good is so much nicer than being sad because your regular clothes no longer fit properly. I actually wore maternity jeans until 6 months post-partum with DS when they started to feel loose and I finally felt confident enough to go buy myself a cute new pair of regular jeans.

Also being a twin mama, I'm shocked at how big I can get one week from the next. I had a "second popping" between this week and last week - interestingly when I increased my protein per my metabolism doctor (I have a metabolic disorder that needs to be managed during pregnancy). So, I think that speaks so much to your point about this being a job.

You were right about the 16 week pop. I definitely woke up feeling much bigger today and a couple people at work commented on my bump. Weird since I'm wearing a pretty baggy shirt today.

It's hard. Everyone has given great advice. I wanted to echo the comments about how little of the gain is actually fat, and that breastfeeding (if you plan to) can help it come off pretty easily. Obviously everyone's experience is different. After having DD, I was frustrated that I hadn't lost more by the time she was around 3 months old. But by the time she was 6 months old, she was eating a lot more (we EBF), and I literally could not keep weight on. Not the healthiest way to go about things, I know, but I was eating anything I could get my hands on to keep my supply up, because I was easily below pre-pregnancy weight without much effort at all. I was so busy with baby, work, adjusting to my new life, that I really wasn't that concerned about it, but it did come off.

Another thing that has helped me immensely is desperately wanting to model a healthy attitude about body image and weight for DD. I used to weigh everything that went in my mouth on a kitchen scale, and now I eat what the rest of the family eats in moderation. It is so much healthier. When I tried clothes on after DD was born and they were still tight, I'd immediately consider that she was watching and say, "that's okay, my body did something amazing in making you - our bodies are incredible!" She was too little to understand it of course, but it's about habits. And I almost never make comments about feeling or looking fat anymore, and I sure don't miss the way focusing on that made me feel. That's not to say that I always feel good about my body, but not focusing on the negative has helped so much.  In this case, fake it til you make it is a pretty good motto!

Sorry for all the rambling. I just want to emphasize that accepting the changes in my body has been much easier than expected, and SO worth the effort. There is hope!
