At their appointment today the doctor suggested starting solids. My older two started at this age with cereals and then jar food, but I know newer recommendations say to hold off until 6 months and skip the cereals. I originally was going to do this but the past week or so the girls have completely lost interest in their bottles. It's a struggle to get them to even eat half. They are just so much more interested in playing and "talking". So I'm considering adding food. What are you all doing?
We are waiting until 6 months. I didn't do cereals with DS1, however I might do them for B because of his reflux. If his reflux doesn't let up I might start cereal a little early too.
TBH, if they aren't eating as much in their bottles I would want to hold off solids even more. Solids shouldn't replace bottles/nursing until close to 1, so I would be nervous to cut back ounces at this point.
Also have they lost that tongue thrust yet? DS1 didn't stop doing that until about 6 months anyway.
We have our appointment tomorrow and I am interested to see what he will say. With J, we started offering solids around 4.5 months, but we gave him so little that it didn't have any impact on his formula consumption. We went along with the whole food under 1 is just for fun. We started with rice cereal and slowly added in purees, then when he had mastered those, just began offering him whatever we were eating. We were so proud of what a great eater he was. Then he turned 2 and he laffed at us. Now he eats mostly yogurt and hot dogs.
I'm considering starting oatmeal around 4.5/5 mos, due to reflux and my child's lack of willingness to take a bottle. We will do mostly BLW though once she has the fine motor skills to do so.
We'll start around 6 months and do blw, so breast milk will always be first and the major source of sustenance. We'll probably sit him at the table with us for meals starting around 5 months.
We did blw with dd starting just before 6 months, when she started stealing my food. It was amazing with her and she was amazing at it. I'm interested to see how it will be for ds since he's not as fine motor skills oriented as she was, but does shove everything in his mouth, which she did not do.
I'm waiting til 6 mo. I never did cereals, pedi told me they were just super processed carbohydrates with little nutritional value. DD1 started purées are 6 months but the amount she actually swallowed was almost nothing til 7 months.
I'm waiting until 6 months, or close anyway, because I'm exceptionally lazy and don't want another mess to deal with. I am of the opinion that babies should be able to sit mainly unassisted before starting solids, which I'm sure I learned from Dr. Google.

Yep waiting until 6 months. We did blw with DS1, but he's not a great eater so we will probably do a combo of blw/purées this time around for a different approach. But we will do food after nursing for the most part until close to 1 so it will just be for fun.

I'm waiting and skipping cereal and going straight to baby led weaning at 6 months or later. Members of my family have tons of stomach issues and colon cancer later in life so I want my kid's gut health to be the best it can be. There's no proof it really helps but since it might, I'm waiting.

Yeah we did cereal at like 2 months with DD because of reflux. DS ate anything and everything as soon as we started. Evie can sit pretty much on her own now and Finn isn't far behind. I was going to skip rice cereal and just do oatmeal. I'm sure I'll hold out a bit longer and see if they up their bottles again or not.

I wouldn't be cutting back ounces, just offering food too since they don't want to ever take more than about 4 oz right now most feedings when they were taking 6. And that's if I use the bottle props and walk out of their sight otherwise they try to play instead of eat.

For reference they both just started screaming for a bottle 4 hours after their last ones. I made them each 6 oz, Finn ate two ounces, Evie ate 3, and now they keep shoving the bottles out of their mouths and laughing. Evie is even blowing bubbles with her formula.
I will usually burp and change them and off the rest and get nothing. I know they'll eat when they are hungry but it's been over a week of this.

J was exactly like this, too. The struggle is real. I am waiting for A to start up these shenanigans. And they make is SO HARD to be grumpy at them when they do it, because they are so stinking cute

Monday the doctor said we could start with oatmeal mixed with BM (or formula, what have you) if he seems ready before 6 months but only cereal, anything else is really not recommended because the intestines are not mature enough. I think we will start oatmeal in a few weeks because he's been very interested when we are eating and reaching for food at the table.

My doctor gave me this today and said both cereal and jar food was ok to start and to start with cereal. They are 19 weeks and are doing all of these except the 32 oz a day which they were doing a few weeks ago.

+1 this is me. I like how easy just breast feeding is. Having to remember other food and figuring out how to fit it in with breastfeeding was more work. I will skip cereals do some purees at first the go with flow.
housecarder the tongue thrust thing..it's like when they stick their tongues out when they spit their pacifiers out. It makes offering solids nearly impossible!
Maybe not every baby does this? I remember DS1 did it often and B does it now too.

We started giving little tastes of cereal this week. Baby will be 4 months on November 2. He drinks over 40 oz of formula per day. He opens his mouth for the spoon and swallows little bits but doesn't seem fond of the taste yet.
Best evidence suggests starting at 4 months lowers the risk of food allergies. "Recommendations" are not black and white and often take a while to keep up with current research. Waiting until 6 months is fine, too, but that is around the time that babies start to critically need higher levels of iron in their diet.
We are starting with rice cereal because it's the least likely to be an allergen. It's iron fortified and easy to digest. We will introduce oat and barley cereals over the next month or so but probably won't start with vegetables until 5-6 months.

No, it's a legit baby reflex, called the tongue thrust reflex. It disappears between 4-6 mo depending on the baby.
We started cereal at 5 months with DD1 because she was great at sitting up on her own and was trying to reach for our food already. I had planned to wait until 6 months with Irene but she won't take bottles so unless something changes when she starts daycare in two weeks we will start earlier so they can offer her that while I'm at work. I'm not in a hurry for solids otherwise because it's just a hassle at this point.

I'm thinking 5/6 months her. Basically when I think she's ready. Ds was ready at 5.5 months. I did oatmeal first for a week then purées so I could mix.
I made my own baby food with him. Not sure how motivated I am to do that this time. Haha

My doctor told me it is a reflex all babies have and solids shouldn't be started until after its gone.
Nvm... @kayelou has got it lol
As for us: we plan to start BLW as soon as tongue thrust is gone and he can sit up himself. I'm hoping for around Christmas time so that he can eat a bit when I go back to work in January.
I'm terrified my supply will plummet when I go to work.

Do you have more info on the allergy best evidence? I'm generally unconcerned about allergies, but now I'm curious how giving non-nutritive cereal at 4 months links to reduced risk.
