I made my own baby food for the first time! I never did it with DS. It was pretty easy and gave me an excuse to buy a new blender, our old one was crap. She loves everything so far except hates green beans. She gets desperate when we start feeding her and wants fed RIGHT away and starts banging on her high chair tray, haha.

With DS we started with purées and then did some BLW, I made some of the food and bought some. My MIL really enjoyed making baby food so I mostly left it to her. DD is doing pretty well with solids, we started with cereal and have introduced a few fruits and veggies. She really likes feeding herself mum mumms so I think I'll take more of a BLW approach with her.
We did oatmeal and we tried avocado. I purréed all of ds1's food and I'll do it again this time. I will probably do larger batches this time though and either freeze or portion for the week. For ds1 I would cook and purée for each meal so it was fresh. I don't have that kind of time anymore.

mladerri baby lead weaning, instead of mostly cereals and purees you offer what you are eating. Stick shaped food is best for their little hands at first.

We started DS on oatmeal cereal about a week after 4 months based on the pedis recommendation. Ds1 has iron deficiency anemia so the cereal is recommended for the iron fortification. We used earths best organic baby food and will do it with ds2 too. Of course fresh foods too like banana and avocado. Ds1 is a great eater at almost 5 and always has been so we are planning on doing everything the same.
ETA: DS is EBF and 18 pounds and a strong baby so the pedi suggested starting solids at 4 months. We are holding off until 5 months to introduce anything other than the oatmeal/breastmilk mix. He's super interested in our food, loves the oatmeal, and is always reaching for whatever we have. WE held off until 6 months for DS1. Definitely follow your pedi's advice!
We started solids this past week. DS will be 6 months old in a week and a half. He hadn't shown much interest in food but he's going through a growth spurt and my milk supply isn't keeping up with him so I figured now would be a good time. He's gradually getting a bit better with it. Sweet potatoes are a hit. Oatmeal mixed with breastmilk or formula was NOT a winner. Neither were carrots.

With DD1 we made her purees like 3 times then just started feeding her from our plates because lazy. We bought purees for daycare.
DD2 we gave avocado the other night because she's super interested in our food. Turns out she was more into the spoon than the food. Which is fine by me since I was hoping to wait another month (she's 5 months now). She did have some licks off DD1's pineapple last night that she seemed to like
I'm putting off starting solids until 6 months. The pedi said we could try rice cereal if we want but we don't need to since their formula is fortified with iron. They haven't really shown any interest yet, and I'm lazy.
My doctor said to wait until six months so I'm doing that. I'm ok with it because it's one more thing to worry about/prepare when he starts. In the last week or so he has really been watching me when I eat though.
We are waiting until her 6 month appointment when she will be a little over six months. With her being five weeks early we are pushing it out a bit longer. There was a study I read yesterday about weaning too early and introducing food to early. So now I am holding out a bit more. DD1 was six months and we did baby led weaning with her.

We are not starting solids yet. We are still trying to get all of his allergies figured out. I mentioned earlier I am currently dairy, egg, and coconut free. We are seeing better poops but not completely healed. So we are waiting until closer to 7 months to start solids with him.
With DS1, we started around 5 months, and I bought pouches for him. I feel like with DS2, we will do more of a BLW approach because it's a bit easier, with purees for daycare and random meals. We'll see how it goes. He is getting to the stage where he's hungrier but his GI and Pedi both agreed that for him, 7 months would be best to let his gut heal. So he is taking 15-20 ounces of breastmilk at daycare. I can't wait to start pumping less once he starts solids though, lol.

We started avocado thinned with breast milk this weekend. It was a definite hit. Mum mums were not. Tomorrow we're trying sweet potatoes. I think we're both enjoying it.
We haven't started solids yet, but I'm thinking we might start some oatmeal cereal this weekend. He'll be 5 months on Thursday. I was going to wait until 6 months, but I think he's ready to give it a try.
I'm debating when to start. How did you guys decide? P is 5 months exactly and my BF pumping output isn't keeping up. We didn't start DD1 until 6 months but our pedi said anytime now is fine.
Question for those feeding rice or oatmeal... If you aren't using breastmilk in the oatmeal or rice, do you use water or formula? I'm trying to include breastmilk in all his meals but I'm struggling to keep up. DH has started to use water but I'm wondering if formula is a better option?
We started solids after the pedi gave us the ok after his 4 month appointment. We started with oatmeal with breastmilk and gradually tried different purees (fruit and veg, no meat yet). He loves pretty much everything except bananas which he has taken a violent dislike to. He has a morning and evening meal of solids. It may be a coincidence, but he's sleeping longer at night when we time solid food well (solid meal around 5:30, breastfeeding top off around 6:30, bed around 7). I'm still pumping at work and breastfeeding, but introducing solids has lessened a lot of the pressure to keep up. My supply is definitely dipping significantly even though I pump for all his meals. I will pretty much keep breastfeeding for as long as I can, but I'm not sure if I'm going to put too much more work into it than I already am. I need sleep and I need to use some of my free time at work to actually work.
origamimommy, I am dairy, soy and egg free! I didn't know anybody else was doing that. We haven't had a normal poop in 8 weeks. We did start for but her GI doctor told us to go ahead (she is 5.5 months).

txmommy14, I am so happy there's an allergy mom here! It took us forever. And I cut dairy and immediately replaced with coconut and he got worse. It was crazy! Soy doesn't seem to give him a huge problem but dairy and coconut are absolutely an issue. Egg is one that may or may not but I am not testing it yet. He had so many instances of blood in his poop that we are taking it easy until 6/7ish months to let the intestines heal.
And then, get this. So he didn't seem to get better after I cut dairy (because, coconut) so we went to New York for a mini vacay, and I was so annoyed and basically said fuck this and ate a slice of pizza. WORST PIZZA EVER. IN NYC. I found the only crappy pizza place. And then my kid screamed and puked for three days straight. I am just glad we figured it out.
DD is not into solids and I'm wondering what will happen if 6 months comes and goes and she still doesn't want to eat. At exactly 5 months I tried giving her a couple spoons of brown rice cereal mixed w/ breast milk. She hated it. Then I tried oatmeal mixed w/ breast milk. She hated it. Then I tried oatmeal mixed w/ breast milk and a little but of apple sauce. She hated it. Finally I tried giving her just apple sauce. She hated it. She doesn't want food. She only wants breastmilk. I've exclusively pumped since birth and she drinks from a bottle, so it isn't a nursing issue. She turns 6 months next week on Thanksgiving day. At this point she might be 7 months before she's willing to eat food. She's just not interested in it. She either cries or doesn't cry but spits the food out/ turns her head away.
origamimommy, I didn't know coconut could be an issue! I don't know what I'd do-I use coconut milk creamer, ice cream, etc. DD had a lot of blooding her poop, too. She still has green mucous poops, but I am just following what the GI doctor told me to do and we will also start reintroducing at around 6/7 months. Going dairy free was hard at first, but I am so used to it now after 3 months that it's not a huge deal!
bgkc4 , I would just try once a day and let her lead. It's just for fun right now, and not really for the calories. Does she sit in a high chair while you eat? If she sees you eating, she may be more interested to try it out too.
We had our kids sit with us during meals and ds2 has been really interested and following us eat for a couple of weeks now. Like he will stare at the fork to plate to mouth and move his lips too. It's cute.
She doesn't sit in the high chair yet. I just sit her on my lap and try to feed her. She has a high chair though. Maybe we should try using it during feedings, or at least letting her sit at the table with us while we eat so that she can watch us.
