When did everyone start "preparing the nursery" and really buying things. I know the answer is likely different for everyone but I'm a planner and want to know how soon is too soon
I am a FTM but we are picking little things up now, like cloth diapers, cute decorations, etc. I would like to have the nursery done by February but we also need to decide if we are moving in the Spring or not.

We painted the room when I was about 4 months, and it was nice to have that out of the way. I didn't get any furniture until I was 6-7 months, but that may not have been the best. I had to order the glider I wanted and it didn't come in until the week after DS was born.

I'm a FTM but we plan to find out the sex at the anatomy scan which will be mid/late January so we won't start painting the room and registering and such until after that. I imagine I'll have a shower in April and put the finishing touches on it then.
With DD, I tried to do a med-free birth, but I needed some IV meds to get through transition after 24 hours of labor. I want to try some meditation this time to see if that will get me through. And I hope it doesn't take so long this time.
The worst part of labor was all the manual checks by the nurses. Those fricking hurt, especially if a contraction came while they were up there. At one point I tried to climb up the pillow while yelling, "No, no, no!"
I pooped about 48 hours before I went into labor, and it was the most poop I've ever seen. Clogged the toilet. Then I pooped about 12 hours after delivery. It was no big deal. Pooping did hurt worse a few days after delivery, but I never took any softeners or laxatives.
With DD, we had been using her room for storage, so I got that cleaned out around week 20 or so. We didn't actually put the crib together until around 36 weeks. I think I got most of the furniture and decorations at my shower around 32 weeks, so if you're having a shower you might want to wait on decorating until after that.

cateyes do you know of any good companies/ have any good starting points for purchasing cloth diapers? We will be the only people in our social circles who will cloth diaper so I feel like I have no one to ask (except my parents who cloth diapered in the 80's)
Me: 29 DH: 35 NTNP since May 2013 charting since June 2014 dx: Graves disease (radioactive iodine), Crohns disease (abdominal surgeries) MMC October 2015 (9 weeks) Severe MFI diagnosis July 2015

I'd like to know this too! I'm planning to join in on the Not Just Cloth Diapers board when I'm further along as well.
ihatepizza - FTM here, but current plan is to keep baby in our room for at least 6 months (per AAP recommendations, which is now actually 12 months), so we're not doing a nursery. We do have a second bedroom which we'll be updating for baby storage and will keep the changing pad in there. But we're keeping the walls the color they are, futon and shelves we already have in there (so family can sleep there while they visit to help out) and will swap out items to make room for baby stuff. I'll really need to clean out the closet and shelves in there but I've been meaning to do that anyway. I already own a glider as a reading chair and it's in our bedroom, so we'll just add a cosleeper and maybe a small shelving unit for stuff to keep close. We're really trying to keep it minimal. Plus we'll be moving when baby is a year old, so they don't need a true room of their own here.

I do all my shopping for now on the Facebook buy/sell/trade sites. I have about 30 diapers so far and a ton of inserts. I like bumgenius, thirsties, and ramparoozs. I don't know for sure what type will work best for us and for baby so we have quite a few other types too based on what's cute and patterns that we like. I also like the idea of the all in ones (AIO) or all in 2 (AI2) for convenience, even if more expensive.

I remember I had a boy and girl nursery theme picked out early on and after the anatomy scan we started slowly decorating. The baby will spend 95% of their time in your room at first but it is nice to have a real changing table sometimes and not your bed. Also we had a little aquarium glow thing in her crib that DD loved and would hang out in there when I needed some time with my hands free. Also I used her room as a quiet place to nurse a lot. DD wasn't really sleeping or even napping in her nursery for several months but it got some good use and was nice to have finished before she came. This time I think we're waiting for the anatomy scan until we get much of anything done. I'm sure it will be a mad dash to get the nursery put together in time.
ihatepizza and marshian, for cloth diapers I'd check to see if you have any boutiques or stores near you that sell cloth so you can go in and play around with the different kinds and determine which kind you want to use. I think some websites also have "beginner kits" of sorts where they send you various kinds of cloth that you can trial before you build a stash.
We have all BumGenius because that's just what worked well with our little guy and the brand I was most familiar with before I got deeper into the cloth world. We do pockets because I like to adjust the absorbency when we've needed it. Super convenient still because I just stuff them all straight from the dryer so they're ready to use when we need them.
I can only speak from personal experience here.....but I recommend waiting until after the anatomy scan before buying a lot of stuff or decorating. While it's highly unlikely anything turns up at the anatomy scan, the point of it is to make sure the heart, brain, and other major organs have developed correctly.

So this is where I confess that we've had a nursery set up in our home since June. We had planned to move DS out of the nursery to a big boy room when he turned two in December but I had a loss around he same time so we procrastinated until June but then got it done. It didn't make sense to take down the crib, changing table, rocker, etc. to the garage just to haul it back up again later. So we remained hopeful that what you think about you bring about and left it all up. It was depressing for a little bit but hopefully it will be used in 7 short months. The baby will sleep in our room for awhile but we will likely still use the room for changes and rocking when we are upstairs so it's nice to have it set up.
Nothing is decorated. Just the furniture remains. If we find out we are having a girl I may buy some decorative pieces. Otherwise we will likely put up the same wall decor we used for DS.

chicagochic - our PNP lived at my parents' house when I went back to work and my dad was taking care of DS. It had the changing table/bassinet and worked really well for him. MH & I have a ranch-style home, so we just use the changing table in the nursery. For a different perspective, a number of moms I know just have a box or something with diapers and wipes in it on each floor and would just set the baby down on a blanket to change them. They rarely used their changing table. Whatever works for you is what works and is cool.

We bought the paint for the nursery before the anatomy scan and a few things here and there, but most purchases and decorating happened in the last two months. This was partly to give people a wider variety of things to buy for the baby shower, partly because MH and I were both really busy with work and didn't have a lot of time. I felt a little panicky waiting so long, but it turned out fine.

Yeah, that's a popular approach. I've got 4 herniated disks in my back, tho, and I know I'll have an RCS, so getting down on the floor has to happen pretty minimally on the beginning and probably for a couple months.
Well then, that definitely makes having a PNP & changing table a very good idea! 🙂

ihatepizza, with DS we started registering and figuring out his room after the anatomy scan. We got the painting, rug, and refinishing of furniture done somewhere around the 36W mark. This time around all I'm aiming to get done before LO is here is to paint and get carpet in their room, probably in March/April around my spring break.
We'all also wait until after the anatomy scan. Hoping to recycle stuff we have around the house for furniture; a dressing table for changing table, DS's crib, DS's glider... I don't know. I tried to be frugal when we had DS and it added to my PPA/PPD to feel like I hadn't done things "right" so in the end I may end up getting actual new baby stuff. Who knows.
When we had DS we lived in a condo, now we're in a traditional house, so I have to at least get some stuff for different floors. Thinking of getting one of those pack and plays that has the bassinet and changing table on the top for our first floor and a changing table for the basement. Mama's not going up 2 floors to change a diaper.
FYI - I completely planned on using DS's dresser as a changing table but found it easier to just bring the pad down onto the floor. This also helped to avoid any rolling off the changing table. If you want a PnP JUST for changing diapers, I'd recommend skipping it and just buying a secondhand changing pad.

STM+ - I feel huge already and can barely for into my regular pants. Am I the only one whose stomach muscles are still taking a vacation from baby #1? I read that you'll show about a month ahead with #2 and beyond. Any truth to this or am I eating too many cookies?

We must be twins because yeah, definitely feel like I'm already showing although I know it's bloat. Look more pregnant than I am. Doesn't help that I haven't lost baby weight from DS.

I didn't really show until 22ish weeks with DD. Now at nearly 11 weeks I feel like I already have a little bump. I'm about 10lbs heavier than when I got pregnant with DD so there is that too.

I compared picture from this same time I was pregnant with May baby. So I was one month further along than I am with this baby. I am absolutely looking more pregnant now than I did then. I think people are work are starting to wonder. Also, I am very fluffy so my uterus pushes my fat all around.

Same here! With my May baby I remember I was not really looking pregnant at a Christmas party. Now I feel that maybe people can tell already with this one.
But maybe it's in my head. I already carry a beer gut around so maybe I'm just self conscious.... Or that beer fit is being pushed out more quickly!

I'm a few pounds below my prepregnancy weight from last time, but my stomach is definitely sticking out more this time. It's still squishy though, so I don't need maternity pants yet.
