I am not Iowan, but I'm helping to organize "Do Your Job" rallies on Black Friday (main event in Des Moines) to pressure Grassley (IA), head of the judiciary committee to approve Obama's supreme court nominee, Merrick Garland. The session will expire before Christmas and Garland (though a long shot) is kind of our last best hope at keeping some kind of check on Trump for the next 2 years at least.
If you are from Iowa, or know someone from Iowa to share it with, message me and I'll include you on all local stuff and the main event page.
This is the event description for more context (for Iowans):
Iowa could play a critical role in minimizing the damage that may be caused by a Donald Trump presidency. YOU can help now.
Rather than wasting time and energy protesting that which we cannot change, let’s organize around something that we can change: President Obama’s stalled nomination of Merrick Garland for the Supreme Court.
Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley (R), chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, is largely responsible for the fact that this nomination has not come to the floor of the U.S. Senate for a vote; he and the fellow majority members on that committee won’t let the nomination leave their committee.
Both history and the U.S. Constitution are on the side of allowing a floor vote. That won’t happen without political pressure, and we don’t have much time to do this: the Merrick Garland nomination will expire at the end of this Congressional session when the Senators take their holiday break.
In terms of Supreme Court nominations, according to the non-partisan National Constitution Center, “Since 1975, the average length of the process between a presidential nomination and a final Senate vote is 67 days.”
President Obama nominated Merrick Garland for the Supreme Court approximately eight months ago, on March 16, 2016.
Since then, 11 members of the Senate Judiciary Committee, led by Sen. Grassley, have abdicated their Constitutionally-mandated duty by blocking Garland’s nomination from even going to the floor of the U.S. Senate for a vote. The 11 men who have decided that their whims take precedence over Article 2, Section 2 of the U.S. Constitution are:
Sen. Chuck Grassley, chair (R-IA)
Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-UT)
Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL)
Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC)
Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX)
Sen. Michael Lee (R-UT)
Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX)
Sen. Jeff Flake (R-AZ)
Sen. David Vitter (R-LA)
Sen. David Perdue (R-GA)
Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC)
If we are to be a nation governed by the rule of law, these 11 men should cease trying to circumvent the law and allow a floor vote. If they do not act, the rule of law will be diminished.
Let’s gather on the day after Thanksgiving, Friday, November 25 (also known as Black Friday) to call on our senator to stop the unconstitutional blockage of President Obama’s nomination.
In recent days, we have heard much talk about the need to come together as a nation. Sen. Grassley and the Senate Judiciary Committee can help us do so.
On solid legal ground, this is our last best hope at creating some semblance of checks and balances on president-elect Trump for the next few years or more. We hope you will join us for this demonstration to demand that Sen. Grassley and his Senate Judiciary Committee allow the Senate to give its constitutionally-mandated “advice and consent” on the Merrick Garland appointment.
