I'm using this post as an example and nothing against you Cherhorowitz .
During the TD IPgate situation, we found out that some of our very close friends off board/IRL were some of the most malicious trolls on the boards. People had been posting with them for 3-4 years and having GTGs with them. I wish that the admins would have been able to do a check at that time of the AEs (some were just harmless, but some were really horrible people).
Okay, but that has nothing to do with a private board. People get close on the internet and sometimes they get burnt. With or without a private board. I'm not saying a private board prevents us from that. I'm just saying if we're planning a gtg, id rather it on the private board than the main board.
GTG sound like planning by pm or email would be better. Like If you want to see and touch them, you should be willing to share your email directly...
I will WK BMB private boards, or at least mine. We do most of our posting on our main board, daily threads, birthday threads, WWYD? threads. But we keep a private board for gtg info and other sensitive stuff we don't want on the main board. We're not putting our addresses out there because, duh but maybe once a month we use the private board because the topic is better suited there. We're not being mean girls and talking shit or leaving someone out, we're also not posting our social security numbers. But after knowing each other for over 3 years, we are a small close-knit group and sometimes we prefer that venue.

I understand how this is really hurtful, but I still don't know if this is worth IP checking all willy nilly.
How about just IP banning malicious and hurtful (definition TBD, tho) posters? Wouldn't that serve the same purpose? It would IP ban the reg and their AE, forcing the reg to awkwardly lie about why their regular account was banned.

Malicious trolls are banned, but we try to do this sparingly. This thread is to discuss how to handle AEs who are toeing the line of what we consider to be catfishing, which is more of a grey area than we would like. We will be coming up with a better definition of what will result in a ban for catfishing and what will result in the PM mentioned in the poll shortly.

I guess I took your example of the private boards and made it about the other situation about AEs...
If there is a malicious troll who is acting up on the boards and with a quick search the admins could out that person, wouldn't you want to know so that you could stop giving them extremely personal information and meeting up with them in person?
*stuck in box*
It's not really specific to our situation. We don't have any AEs on our BMB. I guess if we encountered a problem, we would face it then. But again, we're not really giving out personal info. It's more like "hey, I'm going to be in Any Town next week. Any of the west coast ladies want to get together?" Working out details is usually moved to text or whatever. Its the same as you using your Single Ladies board. We are all aware that we don't have some magical protection from everything there because it is the internet, but we appreciate the added layer.

See my post to Wino about the private board above.
I'm trying not to get annoyed, but I'm annoyed because this comes off some type of way. You don't know who has my email, my phone number, etc. and how we use it. You have no clue what we're doing on the private board but you are so hellbent on being against it. I know you're the ruler of the internet, but I can handle myself. Thanks.

Lol sorry I'm following you around but this leads me to another question.
So if there is someone who creates an AE (let's just specifically talk about Suga/Baily on GKU) that is catfishing or toeing the line of catfishing by whatever definition you come up with, and you send them the PM, then what?
Is the PM just an I see you? Are there consequences? Do they have to out themselves? Do they have to stop posting as their AE? Do you want them to leave? If you want them to leave, why PM them at all? Why not just ban them?
I mean, like, if GiaMia comes back (which I'm sure she will) and she's posting like a normal non asshole but still uses a lot of !!!!!!! so it's obvs her and a few posters realize it and you guys realize it and send her a PM, then what happens? Or is she IP banned now, but you get what I'm asking?

It will depend on the specific situation. We will be getting together to discuss the situations we can come up with and writing a template to be used in those PMs similarly to how we handle spammers.
Previously the reason we outed AEs was to let the board handle it as they saw fit with the most knowledge available.
The bolded is precisely why I think it's fine for the admins to cross check Malicious trolls/shit stirring AEs against the other members of this board (maybe not IPs, but possible what Theo said about checking how many accounts one person has). Because you might post with MrsJuneCleaver on your BMB, but she might be the abortion troll on Parenting.
I understand what you're saying, but isn't this just one of the risks you take on an internet message board?
People might present themselves under a false identity or just run around making shit up, but that doesn't mean it's up to the admins to "protect" members from that.

Okay, but again, private groups have nothing to do with this. I'm not sure I'm following your rationale. That they should IP check every poster ever? That they should IP check malicious trolls? I think we are all in agreement with that. But, as you learned, they can be anywhere: a Parenting reg, a private BMB, wherever. The only problem I see in all of this is deciding what exactly constitutes a malicious troll because I think some people are feeling like AE's are quickly labeled "malicious" when others don't agree with that.

When someone posts your full name and address on a public message board you don't think that an admin should step in?
I don't think anyone would be against admin involvement for that.

Thanks but no thanks to an email with an entire BMB cc'ed.
That's a mighty big bmb GTG. lol.
You aren't posting in any private board with any known AE's or known assholes. It's the unknown ones that are the problem. And they are there. They just always are. Even if banned. You can get around ip address bans with ip hiding software and apps. It's not hard. So all that just ends up being all this work to give the illusion of admins protecting us from ourselves online.
I understand what you're saying, but isn't this just one of the risks you take on an internet message board?

I know you're coming from your personal experience, but that situation isn't really on the table right now. I think we all agree that an AE doing that should be outted.
silverspoon, and on the flip side of what you said, if you are posting on a public message board, you also give up some of your rights to your privacy, such as IP addresses.
This is actually not limited to posting on a message board. When you visit sites in the internet they get a log of your IP address. That's why some sites will have news labeled with your exact city in their clickbait. It's because they've pulled your location from your IP. I've even seen widgets on blogs that have a running list of cities people have visited from that updates in real time. Your IP address is essentially on every site you've ever visited.
Just while administration intervention is being brought up I don't like the way threads and post are deleted sometimes. It feels like there's no freedom of speech. It's one thing with the whole reg vs non-reg and the acceptance of what some posters say compared to others. But a "higher power" deleting what they see fit is too much. Where are the lines on what is mod abused?
Are you talking about a user's entire post history being deleted, or individual threads? The only threads I'm aware of that we have deleted or archived were at the request of a member due to sensitive personal information.

@hazeldublin please keep in mind as well that members can actually delete their own posts individually at any given time. Otherwise the only cases for higher powers deleting posts are what NariaDreaming just mentioned.
Minus the Big Brother posts and we're still sorry that happened so many times.

Individual posts and threads. I understand post history deletion at the request of the user.
Do you have a specific instance of this happening that you can recall (or point us to a thread in question where posts have been moderated).

I guess I agree with the PM thing. I voted for it, but you make a good point about how useful it would actually be to do that.
As for gia specifically, she would be a ban dodger, right?
Yeah I didn't really think the Gia example through very well. But you got where I was going...
