It's officially been a week of bedtimes and DD hasn't sucked her thumb. I put nail polish on her finger nails and painted that thumb this time and she knew she couldn't suck on it. Falling asleep at night has taken a bit longer but we broke the habit. It makes me happy but really sad at the same time. It was the last thing that really reminded me she was still small. 😭
Awesome. G was only using a pacifier for naps and bedtime, but we've gone the whole week without one for both.
Dh and I decided to rent a couple of movies from red box tonight. Our usual routine is to get a scary one to watch right after the kids go to bed, and then get a comedy to watch after. We rented The Amityville Terror for the scary one. Nope. horrible move. Not even a bit scary.
I am so impressed you can make it through two movies without falling asleep! I don't think I can even get through on most of the time!

Are we supposed to be doing that? DD is a thumb sucker, I didn't think it was a big deal at 2.5? She has been to the dentist who said her teeth look great and she had always been a champion sleeper and self soother so I wasn't thinking I needed to try and break her of the habit yet.

Same here. Our dentist said to worry about it in a year or two.
But he did suck his thumb raw this winter and I just got it healed and now he is on to the other thumb.
Our friends who have a 4.5 yo daughter came over last night. It was nice to hang out with normal people who have a kid. They are the only ones we got and unfortunately they live in China.
The kids were playing with magnatiles and DS1 knocked down her house. She threw an epic tantrum, complete with bitch slapping her mom. I'm lucky that DS1 doesn't hit or bite (yet) but so help me god if he ever slapped me like that, especially at that age. I was horrified. They said she was jet lagged which I understand. She did fall asleep right after that.

I'll worry about breaking the habit closer to Kindergarten. I'm not messing with it now for fear of bad sleep. But when the time comes, I'll do the nail polish too.
Just over 2 more hours at work. The countdown is so on! I am heading to the liquor store and getting a couple of different types to make new cocktails.
So sad to see that jennyinheaven will not be joining me in my adventures!

Oh I'll be drinking! I'm starting Jan. 2nd lol. After I drink and eat all the yummy appetizers tonight at my brother's house. Happy New Year!
Maybe pacis are worse than the thumb but our dentist said even though DS dropped the paci before two he could still see damage from it in the roof and crowding in the bottom teeth and it might go away when his adult teeth come in. I've always heard to break it at 2. Glad we didn't wait longer.

I didn't really have any intentions of totally stopping her. We were told to stop it at 3. She was sucking on it during the day and pretty frequently so I'm glad it randomly worked but again it wasn't really my full intention when I did it.

Dh's aunt from Germany sent us home with a giant bag of chocolate. Some of it's meh, but I just found several Toblerones and a box of Rafaellos in the bottom. Yaaaasssss!

Jealous! Whenever I finally make it back toEurope, I'm taking a small bag to bring home all the chocolate

I got carded at the liquor store on my way home from work!

So awesome. I just slid my licence over smiling to myself and when he looked at it then at me, he asked "sooo that makes you..." I said "43, will be 44 in April, so yeah I was laughing when you asked for my ID!"
He said that 43 was the highest yet he has asked lol and I told him that was just a Christmas present that lasts the whole year

I think we are going to have to give up our younger cat. I just cannot get him to stop peeing near the front door (in the living room) and having a stinky living room is horrible for all of us and is seriously putting dh over the edge. This cat had a similar pattern in another room a few years ago and we finally got him to stop after ripping out the carpet and floor-level trim and also then blocking all his favorite places with upside down milk crates and plastic baskets. But even then it took a long time. We can't block off this area because it is the door. The other door to the house is not practical to use as daily/only entrance and exit.
This cat is also not so good with kids - scared and doesn't seem to have the instinct to be gentle. He and dd pretty much stay away from each other, but ... He could hurt her sometime if one or the other doesn't stay away for some reason. Such as their periodic turf battles over cardboard boxes.
I just hate to give up on/ get rid of a pet. Even a not very good pet. But on the other hand - the time, stress, and money involved in dealing with his stupid peeing are just ridiculous. Ugh.

He sounds like the perfect candidate to try a behavioral modification medication on, if you haven't already. It's worth talking to your vet about and exploring those options. It doesn't have to be limited to an oral medication either. Some can be compounded to a transdermal gel you rub in the ear (although sometimes these don't seem to work as well as the oral dose).
I actually have 2 cats on Amitryptiline. One is on oral for inappropriate urination issues, which he has been on/stay on long term. The other one is on the gel for urination issues and high anxiety (she scares very easily, etc.). Hopefully, I will be able to wean her off the medication after a few months.
Anyway, just a thought/option if you haven't tried it or not ready to throw in the towel just yet.

Has the medication fully stopped the inappropriate urination problem? How long did it take to start working? Is it very expensive?
I've heard of meds helping with cats not using the litter boxes but usually female cats who were also showing anxiety in other ways ( or have kidney problems). This is a neutered male; wary of strangers and at least my baby/little kid, but otherwise pretty bratty and not anxious. There wasn't any change in the household when the newest peeing problem started so it's been puzzling.

The oral Amitryptiline isn't very expensive at all in my opinion. It would depend on what your vet charges, but I'd say it's less than $40/month. It's a once a day medication and I usually say give it 3-4 weeks to fully say yes it made a difference or no it did not. It also has a slight sedative effect in the beginning that they become accustomed to. My cat is a neutered male who is aggressively playful towards my other cats, overly stimulated, and will pee almost anywhere but the liter box when off the medication (I've tried to take him off multiple times). On the meds, he is calm and cuddly, rarely attacks the other cats, and rarely pees where he's not supposed to (maybe 2-3 times a month and that's pushing it).
The thing is, there usually is a trigger to the peeing. For mine, and it sounds like yours too, it was a lot of territorial marking combined with stress/anxiety. If mine sees or smells another cat from outside, he will pee by windows/doors to mark his territory. Sometimes I'll catch him in the act even with the medication. So, we try to keep strays from coming up to the house.
In any case, a vet will start with an exam to rule out uti and go from there. In the end, drugs can sometimes be a life saver (literally) and definitely worth a try before making the ultimate decision.
SIL is dropping hints about her baby name. She's due in a week or so. It's a girl. The name is Irish, and starts with an S. Any guesses?
Another hint: it's a landmark. I'm stumped. They're not the type to give their kid a weird name. If it was a boy it would be James like all the other first born men of the family.
For anyone still curious, baby Shea was born today!
