I'm really anxious about giving DD food. I don't know how we can model good eating habits for her when I eat a very restricted diet and DH eats a lot of junk food and is a binge eater.
And I know I'm going to get pressured by my MIL to give her sweets before I'm ready, which is one reason I don't want to leave DD with her when we are over the holidays. But DH thinks I am being too strict about how long I want to wait to give her foods with added sugar. I just don't want her to be diabetic like me and I want to do anything that could possibly help prevent that.
I totally understand how you feel.
But, something to remember: the biggest cause of diabetes is genetic predisposition. Despite popular thought, you can't actually eat your way into diabetes. Even type 2. If you could, my H would be a diabetic! No kidding, he eats the amount of carbs I eat in a day at one meal. Or like, as a snack.
I think the important thing will be to model how to enjoy foods and how to eat foods that fuel your body. That's what I want to teach my kid - food isn't good or bad, there's no moral value to it. But how we care for our bodies is important, and that means giving our bodies fuel so that we can be healthy. I have a lot of food hangups that I really don't want to pass along! Same goes with exercise - it's not a punishment that you have to do, there are so many fun ways to move our bodies that we can enjoy.
