At what point do I need to find a pediatrician? And when do I call them to set up baby appointments?
I think we did our prenatal consult between 32-34 weeks last time.
As for the initial baby app, you should get instructions at discharge to call once your home. DS1 had his first app 2 days after discharge and I think it's the same this time around. You should have a <1 week old app and a 2 week old app, with a potential for a 1 month app, before beginning the normal timeline of appointments (2m, 4m, 6m, 9m, 12m, 15m, 18m, 2 year for the first two years)
At what point do I need to find a pediatrician? And when do I call them to set up baby appointments?
My doctor gave me a list of recommended pedis at my first third tri appointment and told me to start researching whenever, I just needed to have someone picked out when I checked into the hospital. I think it kind of depends on how much research you want to do and if you want to try to visit them or are ok just calling/checking them out online
When does the pediatrician first see the baby? At the hospital (and if this is the case, are your choices limited to doctors affiliated with the hospital you're delivering at)? At the first appointment after birth?

With DS1, it depended on if you went with a pedi that had nursery privileges. He saw a different pedi the following morning (on call pedi) and then his pedi the second morning because she was on call and was the one who discharged him. He officially saw her for the first time at 4 days old for his new baby appointment.
I'm assuming it's the same this time around but I haven't inquired as to who has nursery privileges where I will be delivering at
PirateCat also, you'll probably be limited in the hospital based on privileges but not once you are discharged. You should have your pick of those practices that accept your insurance and accept new patients

So if I choose a pediatrician that doesn't have privileges at the hospital I'm delivering at, the on-call pedi at the hospital will see him when he's born, and then he'll see his doctor after being discharged? Thanks!

Pretty much how it should work, yes. Should being the operative word there

Depends on your situation. Our system here has the pediatrician come out and do the circumcision if baby is a boy and that's something you're having done. Otherwise, you go for a check up a couple days after baby is born.
I think it was earlier on in this thread that someone asked about hospital bag supplies... if not, disregard, but one thing I remember wishing we had was baby wipes. They gave us dry wipes and had us use water with them but we had a difficult time getting him clean
Oh interesting. What else would you recommend? I've heard to bring your own pads, because the hospitals are awful.
Did you bring your own pajamas or robe for after the birth? Or just stay in the hospital gown?
The pads at my hospital were fine except you had to wear 2 for them to be long enough.
I brought comfy clothes but ended up staying in my hospital gown until I showered and got dressed to go home. I also wasn't allowed to shower until the last day due to BP issues. Had I been able to I still probably would have put a new hospital gown on instead of clothes.
ugaqueencity, that does seem way more convenient but I will most likely be choosing a pediatrician with privileges at the larger hospital network. I chose the smaller hospital because I liked their birthing unit better but my PCP is affiliated with the bigger hospital and that's what I would want for the baby longer term.
Omg I completely glossed over who would be doing the circumcising. I just assumed it was done at the hospital? Ah.
If you are choosing that route, the pedi who sees him after birth will make sure it's okay to do. If so, it's usually done the day after birth in the hospital. Whether it is an OB or a pedi who does it is determined by your state.
For DS1, my OB did it the day after he was born. I was told this one will be done the following day as well, probably around lunch time, and it's by the OB on call and one of my MWs will assist. It should take about an hour.
If for some reason it can't be done in the hospital and you chose to do it, I believe you need to find a pediatric urologist to do it as an outpatient procedure. This happened to a friend of mine when the baby had to have to done at 2 weeks old instead of right after birth
Also, for those choosing to circ, you'll want to make sure you have vasoline or the like on hand until it heals. It should be healed in about a week and your pedi should check it at his newborn visit to make sure it's healing properly
Also, my nipples have gotten so big already and I assumed that's what happened to everyone. I am constantly asking H if he can see my nipples through a bra and a minimum of two shirts. I'm only 19 weeks so I don't know if they will just keep growing through the pregnancy and breastfeeding.

I better start doing some research soon...
Honestly, if there's an issue that would lead to you needing to be at the bigger hospital (and this obviously depends on the hospital), they will probably transport you to the bigger hospital. I'd ask your doctor to confirm but that's been the case for me both times.

The two hospitals are 5 minutes apart and they will transport me and/or baby if anything should happen. The larger hospital network is more convenient and it is where I'd prefer for myself and the kid for anything other than the birth.

ok that helps. We plan on calling the pedi tomorrow and double check. Or should we wait and talk to my MW that evening? I don't know who to talk to first.
Being me, id call the pedi (if they are familiar with your hospital) to confirm. If not, id call your MWs and ask before you go in just so you know before the induction begins and it's one less thing to think about.

I called them at 22 weeks and had a prenatal consult / meet the drs at 36 weeks. I didn't intend to start the search until into 3rd tri but ended up deciding early because of friends who also use that Dr office.

Our ped office does rounds at the hospital I delivered at so a ped from the office checked him out the 2nd and 3rd mornings after birth (he was born just too late to be included in rounds day 1).
Then we had a follow-up at the peds office the day after we went home from the hospital. It would have been a few days later normally but we went home on a Thursday and they wanted us in earlier because of the weekend instead of waiting until Monday.

My nipples stopped growing sometime around then. My boobs went up 3+ cup sizes in the first 11ish weeks, and then the nipples caught up. Now at 31 weeks boobs are, I think, getting bigger again (slowly this time) but nipples have thankfully stayed where they are. DH and I joke about how many of his nipples/various coins can fit inside one of mine. I've heard they can get longer, though - if you are including that in growing.

Oh man, it's good to know that they won't just keep growing, it seems impossible for them to get any larger. Although I would count longer as growing. Will they shrink back or...

We weren't allowed to be discharged until we had an appointment on the books for the very next day.
Granted we did not have a pediatrician where we delivered. Our new pediatrician has hospital rights so she'll see us before we're discharged.
world dumbest question: I'm very newly pregnant. I just got back to work for the first time since the break. I therefore sit at my desk all day and the top of my jeans up into my lower stomach. Um, that's not going to damage anything is it?
So dumb asking this, but it's going through my head. lol. eh

I remember thinking this often. Belly bands help! Or invest in a good pair of maternity jeans. I only purchased one pair of maternity pants and they've lasted through my whole pregnancy. I do still wear some of my pre-pregnancy jeans and I use belly bands.
I am a fan of the "rubber band trick" even before I was pregnant, so I'm actually doing that now. It's just weird to "fold" there since I know there is a little something in that area (or at least I think so - first appt isn't for 2 more weeks!)

You will become too uncomfortable to wear a pair of pants long before they could be tight enough to hurt baby!

No, it won't hurt anything. Baby is small and has plenty of room in there. But if you're uncomfortable, belly bands, maternity pants, or the hair tie trick should help (as PPs said).

They should, though they will probably look different than what they were pre-pregnancy. Mine have grown throughout both pregnancies, all the way through. It's luck of the draw, I think.

Mine never grew. Made BF such a pain in the ass. I'm actually hoping to perk out a bit this time so I don't struggle so much this go around.

I don't know how pregnant you are, but up until about 12 weeks your ute and baby are still under your pelvic bone. Very safe from tight pants! That early bloat is killer though.
