Am I insane for thinking we can go on vacation with my family with an approximate 8 week old? My parents rent a beach house for a week every summer. It's only an hou drive for us and the house is right on the beach so even if I'm stuck in the house I will feel like I am still on the beach and a part of everything. My parents will be very helpful and understanding of everything so I am thinking we'll go. Am I insane?

It is doable I think. It's not like you'll be out and about with a newborn since it's a rented house and you may be stuck on the couch nursing a ton but at least you would have help around to bring you food. The annoying part will be packing everything you need I think otherwise it's just the usual newborn difficulties with a change of venue.

It's definitely doable. Just bring all your crap and you will be set. We take the kids everywhere and although bringing all their crap is a huge undertaking once we get there it's nice to be in a new environment. And if your parents are willing to help it should be great.

I traveled 4 hours away with my DD at 8 weeks and it was totally fine. Definitely doable! You will probably appreciate the change of scenery!

How soon before you move from the infant car seat to the convertible one? Also how long before you started using a high chair?
We aren't having a showe so it's on us to get everything. I'm trying to decide if I should cave and buy the convertible car seat and high chair now with my completion discount or wait until we need them. Part of it depends on how long before we'll need them...
dancerspose we never had an infant seat BC I have a bad back. We had the maxi cost pria 70 with tiny fit. We changed to the bigger baby setting at 8 months. We started using a high chair at 4 months in the laying back position. I would get both with the completion discount especially if they are on sale.

dancerspose we've been using the highchair for a few weeks now and DD just turned 4 months. She's not eating food yet but it's been a nice place to sit her while we eat. She loves to be with us and we just give her a bunch of toys on her tray. The convertible probably depends on how big baby is. I'd use the discount of you can.

dancerspose we just moved to our big girl car seat Christmas Eve (DD is 8 months). We started using the high chair at 5.5 months when she started solids.
jennykat I used cetaphil or neutrogena deep clean the whole time.

I'm so paranoid about beauty products and ingredients now, but good lord my skin needs help. Any pregnancy and wallet friendly skin care recommendations?
Not sure your skin care issues are acne related but I used a sulfer based acne treatmebt when pregnant that helped a bit. Otherwise I just stuck to mild soaps and sugar scrubs.

M is was in the 99th % for height and weight and we moved to the convertible at about 6 months but I know others whose kids fit in the infant seat much longer. It really depends on their size and if the like the bucket. M hated the incline and closed in nature of the bucket so the convertible was much better. We started using the high chair around 5 months. We bought it then and had her sit and play in it then started food at 6 months. If you have space and it's a good deal then that is an easy one to get early because most babies start solids in the 4-6 month range and you know you will need it.

I like the Belli brand skin care. I mean, there was only so much I could do, but it did help. It's not the cheapest, but it didn't break the bank.

Conversely my 14 month old is only 17 lbs. So she could conceivable still fit in the seat. We switched her at about a year because she wanted to sit up and she was annoyed with the bucket seat. So it totally depends on the kiddo.
We started using the high chair around 5 months to get her used to it for when we started feeding her. We really over-bought (gifted) on the high chair and really don't need anything as fancy as we have.

Hi,
So car seats are tricky because it's by the size of the baby in the infant car seat. All car seats differ by their limits, some last longer than others. But infant car seats probably last close to a year in general. There are two limits, height and weight. If the child out grows one limit (then it is no longer safe). Height limit is usually reached before the weight limit. They should generally have 1 inch of shell above their head. Car seats also have life spans. So it's best not to buy both at same time if you are saving for future children/check when the car seat was manufactured (because it is from the manufacturer date). My infant seat has a lifespan of 6 years from manufacturer date.
So which to buy? I loved having the infant car seat because my daughter was born in January in a cold wintery climate. It was heavy but nice to be able to carry her into the store, doctor's office, etc. unbuckling children can be a pain. It also pops into a stroller nicely.
The convertible car seats, you use from infancy or the switch until child again outgrows (probably by height first) the infant seat. You should rear face in convertible to minimum of 2 then you can switch around or keep rear facing (parental choice). I bought a convertible with high rear facing limits (weight) so I can do extended rear facing. Convertible car seats can last up to 7 years from manufacturer date. So like if you buy right now, lets say manufacturer last June (you have already lost 1/2 a year on that life).
For me, high chair at 6 months when I introduced food

dp21 yeah DH was worried about the "shelf life" issue of the car seat.
We already have an infant one - my mom bought us the infant seat/stroller set. We'd save about $50 buying the convertible one now, and I figure if we'll need it any time in the first year it's probably worth it. Or at least to get it, then check the date on the box to see how long it's good for since we could return it if needed.
It sounds like the high chair is a definite though, I didn't realize we'd likely use it within the first 4-6 months.

My child usually rides in one car mainly. You could always put convertible in second car you don't use as often as back up instead of getting another base because those tend to be expensive.
A 50 dollar deal is ok. When are you due/when will child be close to a year?
We bought both our car seats on black friday (you end up buying two convertibles because they are HEAVY), not worth moving back and forth to us. I got my 300 dollar Chicco Nextfits for 180 each on Albeebaby online. Zulilly tends to have sales and so does Amazon through the year. I feel like you could do better than 50 bucks if that is the drive. Just have to be on the look out!

So I didn't really pay attention to my face wash and after this thread I checked it out. I use Alba acnedote, and while it has 2% silicate acid, a lot of websites say that it's ok if it's over the counter.
Do I need to switch? My face hates it when I change my routine.

My dd is 15m and still in her infant seat (graco click connect 30xl) since she's on the small end of the growth chart. We just bought a convertible car seat b/c we thought it'd be more comfortable for our recent long (8hr) drive. I'm glad we're still able to use the infant seat though, since she still falls asleep in the car sometimes and I like being able to bring her in the house still asleep, which gives me a minute to take off my shoes and everything. I think you'll still be able to find a good deal later on.
As far as high chairs, we got this one from Ikea for $20. It's $15 w/o the tray. i think a few people on my bmb (or maybe SAIF) have it? The tray is hard for me to get off, but I never really need to remove it, so it's a moot point for me. The whole chair is so easy to clean (ffc: sometimes I forget to clean it after dinner, but it's still easy to wipe down the next meal). We started using it around 5m, to get her ready to seat at the table before we started solids at 6m.

My perinatologist was fine with me using 2% salicylic acid. Depends how picky you feel like being.

@ketchup we actually already have the second base too, my mom bought us the whole car seat/stroller/extra base combo. One of the reasons I'm thinking about buying the convertible seat now is the fear that we'll decide we need two when it's time, for all the reasons you listed. Unfortunately DH and I can't just swap cars (I don't drive manual and all of his- yes he has more than one vehicle- are manual). I'm thinking buying one now will make having to buy another when it's time easier to swallow, rather than having to fork over the money for two at once.

My husband also owns a manual that I can't drive lol. I told him though this is his last car like this haha.
In terms of back up carseat, if you already have two bases (one installed in each car), the infant seat is small and just stays with baby at all times. So like if goes to daycare, the infant seat would stay with baby at daycare and either of you could pick up and pop into the base installed in your car. Base + convertible would take up an entire back seat in most cars. You can also install infant seats without a base, it's just a pain the a** compared to clicking in and out.

@teachermomybe we traveled 11 hours away for thanksgiving when DD was 12 weeks. Totally fine. I way overpacked but it was better to have everything than be sorry I didn't have enough
Ditto to this at Christmas. We actually bought one of those car too carriers to help with our crap.
Are you planning to breastfeed? If so, you'll probably be stuck inside doing that a ton but as long as your expectations for being outside on the beach a bunch aren't Hugh, it's doable

I plan to try to breastfeed. With the house being right on the beach I would be okay sitting on the porch/deck instead of down on the sand and still feel like I am "on vacation".

jennykat I use coconut oil on my skin as moisturizer and as make up remover. It has antibacterial and antimicrobial properties so even though I was skeptical it would make my skin greasy and break out, it has done wonders for me. I use castille soap on my whole body (including face) with the vibrating face scrub brush. For "foundation" I just use Tarte BB cream

dancerspose we switched DD at 6 months. Once she could sit independently she HATED being so reclined in the infant seat. She still fussed in the convertible seat for a while but not as badly and didn't fight the other seat as much since she was more upright. High chair was intro'd at the same time since that's when we started "solids".

We are getting one soon because M is really tall and the infant one is becoming too cramped...he's 5 months. Some people go straight to the convertible and bypass the infant one. We just started using a high chair at 5 months.
Same with @wineandcupcakes we didn't want to do anything invasive to put pregnancy at risk after everything we have gone through. Even though low, agree blood test + ultrasound first (then if at risk, consider doing something more invasive). There are some fancy genetic blood tests you can do early on now too. I never did them, not even sure if my insurance would cover it.
