My mom was asking me about names last night. I'm not sure how she doesn't know me well enough to know if we had one picked outthat we wouldn't tell anyway. She was also asking who DS middle name was after. I feel like she was going to bring up the fact that her maiden name should be DDs middle name this time around. She's going to be disappointed that it's not.
I am pretty reluctant to commit to a name ahead of time. I am easily swayed by others opinions and I also personally want to be able to make sure it's still what we want when she's born. My parents named me something and then changed it 3 days later, I think after they left the hospital.... so I'm particularly sensitive I guess
starsandshamrocks123 - I wonder why people think their name should be used as part of a child's. If the parents choose to honor you that way, that's lovely. Not sure why some people come to expect it, even if you did honor another family member with another child's name.
We won't be sharing our name choice with anyone. I might not share it here. I don't think other people's opinions will sway us, but I just don't care what they think. Plus we're team green, so the actual name isn't set in stone anyway.
I have a feeling we'll have a favorite name for each sex, but be willing to use one of our other names if we see baby and don't think the chosen name fits. Nothing wrong with changing your mind!

marshian I think it's because my family is crazy haha. Or because my family always starts these family traditions and everyone follows suit because they don't want to be the ones to mess it up. But I don't care. Whoops!

I'm starting to panic that Charlotte is too popular (and with a super popular IRL name I don't want my poor child to be Charlotte 4 in her class- if baby has a vagina that is).
We've created a new list that includes: Brynn, Harper, Jocelyn (both of our favourites but my mom has a thick accent and can't pronounce it) and Hailey. Any thoughts? Feedback? Picking a boys name was so easy and now that we are officially team green we will need a girl name

ihatepizza , I also love Charlotte but worry about popularity too. Of your other names, I'm a fan of Jocelyn and Hailey - I think they're more classic/longtime names while the others are more trendy. I know tons of Harpers. All of your choices are pretty, though!

For what it's worth, I work in a very large urban city in childcare and so far I've only come across one Charlotte in my few years being here. I read somewhere that even names that are #1 in popularity have less people with that name since more parents are valuing unique names. So like, when I was a kid Amanda was super popular. Let's just say it was the #1 name, so let's say there were 100 girls named Amanda. Now, even if Amanda were still #1, it would have like 50 girls. The only names I've come across that had a bunch of kids with the same name so far is Jaiden and Aiden. But I think there tends to be less variety with boy names overall.

Your comment makes sense based on my experience, too. My daughter is Abigail, a top 10 name, and there's not a single other Abigail in her 100+ person preschool. My son is Griffin (a family name), which is not high on the popularity lists at all, and there is another Griffin in his 12-kid preschool class.
So that supports not worrying about the popularity stats

Thanks everyone, I had myself worried. As a "Sarah" I always find myself in the company of several name sakes and I was hoping to have my children avoid the same fate (even now as an adult I'm still in every meeting with at least one Sarah). Naming a baby is harder than I initially thought

ihatepizza I've had that thought too! Before I ever got pregnant I thought it would be so fun to name a baby, but once it was a reality it just felt stressful and like a big responsibility. I also have a popular name and usually share it with someone else everywhere I go. When I was younger it bothered me, but I do like the name itself and I'm good with it now. I wouldn't let popularity stop me from using a name I love.
Anyone want to throw some boy names at me? The baby names thread is always a little too 'out there' for me and I'm just having a REALLY tough time coming up with real possibilities for this little guy. I always had a favorite name with DD and we still didn't name her until like day 2 at the hospital, when they were pushing the paperwork to be discharged.
So: DD is Mia Katherine and our LN is long, beginning with D and ending with -ian. H is Matthew David.
My ideas: Benjamin Matthew, William Matthew, Mason James. I've also always loved Jack and H actually mentioned it, but it's off the table for us, I think (due to friends with babies named Jack).
H's ideas: Rex or Vinny. I can't even. We are not Italian at all.
lulu783, I love Benjamin and William. My son's middle name is Matthew, and we're thinking of Katherine/Catherine if this baby is a girl, so I think we have similar name preferences
Our front runner right now is Samuel if this is a boy, and we also like Henry. For some reason DH is in love with Alan, but I think that's too much of a combo of our two older kids' names (Abigail and Griffin).

I love Samuel! It was on our list, but H's brother has a dog Sam and we would have used Sam as a NN.
H's family owns and operates a farm, so we all live on the same street and we see them basically every day. Otherwise I'd be cool with it. Henry is great too!
What's your son's name?
FFthC - sometimes I wish I had gone with Katherine (Kate) Mary for my DD. It's just so pretty and classic.
lulu783 my son's name is Griffin - my MIL's maiden/middle name. We picked it when I was pregnant with DD in 2012, but now it's become more common here. Normally it would be a little too non-classic for me, if it wasn't a family name.
Another boy name I love is my husband's name - Reed. I feel like it's simple and classic. We're not into doing a 'junior' but I recommend that name to other people

Looks like you're looking for more traditional names? Less out-there? I can give you all the names I liked before we narrowed it down to two first-letters:
Edison Franklin Arthur Anders Vaughn
I do like Benjamin! Mason seems to be fairly trendy right now, so I would stay away from it but that might not matter to you. Is Matthew a family name?

lulu783 - I love the name Mia! As for boy names, William is DS's middle name and we considered it for his first name. Benjamin is a classic name. I like Mason, but unless your first name begins with an M, I would not add another M first name.

Truth. I'm an A, so the dog (Sophie) and I would be out of the M club!

We are having a girl, so we get to use Eleanor, as I had hoped. We had a list of about half a dozen middle names, none of which we were in love with, and then found out that DH's great-grandmother's middle name was Marguerite, which works perfectly. We'll have one name from each side, both classic names. DD's name will have the same number of syllables as DS, but different rhythms: DS is duple vs DD triple. The last doesn't really matter, but it makes me smile.

lulu783 we had trouble with boys names for DS. We ended up going with a family name, but Jack was probably second choice. Now in the gym class we go to with DS there are usually 3 Jacks. I wish it wasn't so popular.
I love Benjamin and William. I also for some reason love Daniel and James. Our last name is too boring/common for something classic I feel. My sister chose Nolan as a mn for her first boy and then was annoyed because for her second son she would have used Nolan as the first. Just throwing that name out there as it's not as common. It was a family name on my BILs side.
