How long do your nursing sessions usually last? DS1 was a marathon nurser and took 45-50 minutes every time. This baby appears to be more efficient, but I won't be going back to the ped until his one month check up to see how his weight gain is going. He nurses maybe 25 minutes per session. Just want to see if there's an average range out there. TIA!

This is still very variable for us right now. Our short sessions are 25min and our long ones are almost 60min. LO is 2 weeks and hit birth weight this past Friday. I let her nurse until she comes off of the breast on her own so there is a decent amount of comfort nursing in our longer sessions I think.

LO never nurses less than 20 minutes if she's actually hungry. We also get some super long feeds because I usually don't mess with her. I either wait until she flies off like crazy baby or falls asleep. So 20-50 minutes for us.

Short sessions are like 15 minutes (only one boob - usually if he falls asleep on the boob), longer sessions are about 40 minutes (both boobs, with comfort nursing). I'll cut him off if he's just playing. Weight gain has been great. He lost about half a pound of his birth weight, but he's gained it back plus another 2 and half pounds.

Usually about 10 minutes per boob, when he nurses from both. Sometimes he'll do 15 minutes on one side and 5 to 10 on the other side. Nearly 3 weeks old. Lost 6 Oz between birth and discharge. Gained 14 Oz from discharge to week 1, and another 13 Oz from week 1 to week 2. He sometimes eats every 45 minutes to an hour, but has gone just over 4 between feedings.

Our long sessions are like 20 maybe 25 minutes tops. On average they're about 10-15 minutes every 3-4 hours. And she's gaining weight like a champ so I guess that's long enough for her.
When LO is hungry, anywhere from 15-45 min. Sometimes I'm not sure she knows what she wants, and she'll eat for like 5-10 minutes. It really varies. Last night I weighed her before and after her feeding. She'd only eaten for about 15 min but had 3 oz, plus she has plenty of diapers and weight gain is consistent, so I'm not worried about the short sessions.
This LO is anywhere from 20mins (she can be super efficient and get a side done in 10 minutes) to 45 minutes at night when she's sleepy and wants to comfort nurse more. When she was in NICU, the docs there said that anything over 5 minutes is considered a successful nursing session. They really are efficient little things. The best indicators of adequate nursing are wet diapers and whether your LO seems satisfied after they have nursed. It's so funny how different each child can be. My older kids were all over the map, from fifteen minutes total to an hour each time.
I have 4 little bears, just like my name says. 2 girls 2 boys ages 8,5,3, and my newest babe. 2 of my little bears have life threatening food allergies, feel free to ask me more about that!
We stay pretty consistent at 30 minutes. Sometimes 40 but usually just 30 and I do one boob per feeding. He wasn't getting enough hind milk when I did shorter feeds on both sides.
As pp have said, it varies by the time of day and the actual day. LO does anywhere from 20-45 min. My DD did anywhere from 15-30 min and wanted her paci and didn't comfort nurse. Whereas LO loves to comfort nurse. I would just rely on weight gain and wet/dirty diapers.

I'm with pps it really varies. We usually go for around 30mins. Sometimes that is only nursing from one side and other times he'll do about 20 on one side and then another 10 on the other but 30 seems to be his limit for the most part. I always offer the second side but here lately he's been satisfied with just one.
I have a fast flow so anywhere between 15-30 minutes. The later in the day, the longer the sessions get. Right before bed, it can be an hour long, but she's also comfort nursing at this time.

Wow, reading these times, I never realized how fast a nurser my LO is! She's done in under 15 minutes, consistently. I know I have a fast flow too (if she ever pulls off in the first couple minutes there is milk EVERYWHERE), and the bruised nipples demonstrate her Hoover abilities. DS was the same, if not even more aggressive.
This baby usually nurses for 20-30 minutes. DD2 was pretty similar maybe even a bit more efficient. My first DD took forever to eat. Like close to an hour and she would get so distracted. Glad #2 and #3 are more efficient and eat.

Plenty of wet and dirty dipes, it just feels too good to be true to have an efficient nurser. Also, no clogged ducts yet, which is miraculous. Thanks for responding. Sounds like he's in the range of normal.

Mine only nurses 5-15 min and just one side per nursing session. He's already in the 11 lb range at 4 mo. He must be efficient and I know I have a fast letdown and flow.
At first it was like 15 min to an hour but then the pedi we saw (ours was out of office for 2 day checkup) said don't let her nurse longer than 15 minutes each side... So I started unlatching her at the insistence of dh... She does I admit soothe suck and overeats then spits up everywhere. So our feedings range from 7 minutes to 30 minutes depending on which side (right is way bigger and more efficient -- any tips to even them out?) Which now to me seems a shorter length. She gained her birth weight back in a week.
cherryfive My boobs are really uneven, and milk supply is also! My right side makes almost double what the left makes. If you find something that works to even them out, let me know!

She usually does one boob in 5-10 minutes. Every once in a while she'll do a long feed 15-20 minutes. She does not comfort nurse hardly ever. I have a fast let down and she gets mad with the flow. She would much rather have her bink.
ladyprof Out of curiosity, why are you supplementing? Have you done a weighted feed to see how much baby is getting from the breast? 2 oz. is a whole feed for a newborn, so that's a lot of formula to supplement with.
Anywhere from 4-30 minutes, most commonly about 10. He seems satisfied after 10, and if it's longer it's after a monster nap/sleep, he's comfort sucking, or he overeats and spits!
emmyg65 I make almost no milk. My weighted feed was zero before taking supplements myself. She gets about 16oz per day now of formula plus nurses about 2.5 to 3 hours over the course of the day. I'll nurse her as long as she wants. I'm providing her just a tiny bit of milk, but it's something.
And yes, I've tried everything for more milk. This is as good as it gets. Right now I'm on Reglan and More Milk Plus and lots of water but I've seriously tried it all.
