I think the board books of classic literature are cute. Some are counting, some are weather. We have Press Here and Giraffes Don't Dance and Rumble Jungle in our nursery so far. My mom also got us some Dr Seuss books. My favorite non-board books are Harry the Dirty Dog and Don't Let the Pigeon Stay Up Late.
I'd suggest also getting non board books that you like for the first little while. We read to V at bedtime since he was a month old, but now he is very picky about books and has to choose them himself. Which usually means the same three board books every night.
I like most Dr Suess, and so many come in board books, but they are usually shortened versions. I have some favorite from my childhood, like Where the Wild Things Are and the If You Give a Mouse a Cookie books, V loves those. As for board books, V loves Click Clack Moo, Goodnight Moon, The Very Hungry Caterpillar.
I also have a mother goose collection and Beatrix Potter collection, and a couple of books of children's poetry that V liked when he was younger.
If anyone is wanting to get Dr Seuss books, they're almost always on sale in March for his birthday. The big ones are usually $10 and $5 for the small ones. I'm not sure of what the board books are but this has been the sale for the last two uears

Sandra Boynton and the Llama books are popular here.
Very Hungry Caterpillar Pat the Bunny Ten Little Ladybugs Dear Zoo Brown Bear Brown Bear What Do You See? Where is My Cat? I Am a Bunny Runaway Bunny Where's Spot? Toes, Ears, Nose (and the other lift the flap books by Katz) Sheep in a Jeep
The Stinky Cheese Man is a fun book. It's a silly twist on classic fairy tales. E.g. The stinky cheese man is a parody of the Gingerbread Man.
Chicka Chicka Boom Boom was always a hit.
I'm not sure age range you're looking for, but some of my other faves: Dr. Seuss, as mentioned already The Giving Tree Shel Silverstein's poetry Madeleine Corduroy The Berenstain Bears series Little Critter series

My absolute favorite book when I was a kid was Tiki-Tiki-Tembo. My mom even loves it and said it was one kid book she never got tired of reading.
When I first got pregnant I bought a book called Wish. It's about an elephant family that waits and wishes for years for a baby and finally their wish comes true. I might have cried in Target over that one.

DD's favorite was a book called If I Were an Owl. She loved that book to pieces (literally). Another favorite of hers, my niece and nephew was Peekaboo Kisses.
