For those looking for mom friends --
I met my BFF in a meetup moms group when DD was a tiny baby. I started it myself because it seemed like most of the groups were for older kids and I had an infant (DS) and was pregnant with another. I met a ton of moms who I'm still friends with even though only a handful still live in the Chicago area where we all started out. I gave up the group a long time ago, but I think it's still going after being handed off to new owners multiple times as babies grew.
I've also joined a few local moms groups on FB, and I met a nice group of moms with similarly aged kids after we moved to WI, also through meetup. The local meetup group has moved to FB, but it's still fairly active with a book club, lots of activities in the summer with all the kids (it was year round, but now all the kids are in school during the year), coffee mornings on the weekends, and moms nights out.
MOPS is fairly widespread and I know a lot of people have enjoyed meeting moms through there. I haven't joined because it seems to be aimed towards Christian moms.
When we lived in the Chicago area, a lot of libraries and park districts ran baby and toddler playgroups weekly. They were usually free or really cheap and you didn't have to be part of the library or live in the township to attend. Libraries also have story times geared towards littles. Barnes and Noble used to have free story times (I'm assuming they still do, but I haven't checked since my older kids were little). If you go regularly, you'll notice that a lot of other moms go regularly too.
