DS1 is 2 today ðŸ˜ðŸ˜ How did my baby get so big already??
Is he behaving today???
He was good until one of his daycare girlfriends tried to steal his birthday toy, so he hit her with it.. 🙈 we got him the Birthday Thomas from the wooden railway set and he loves the cake that comes with it (plays the theme song) so he wouldn't let it go
We're thinking it's another wonder week because of how his general behavior has been. He was definitely in a better mood when he woke up despite waking at midnight due to a probable nightmare

Poor kid hpnegirl. I hope he doesn't have nightmares about your MIL. Lol j/k.
Speaking of dreams - the last two nights my dreams have been so vivid, I don't actually remember falling asleep. I feel like I am actually awake dreaming about storage and organization or TDaP shots lol
UO brought to you by the election and inauguration season: I don't want a tax break. I would rather pay higher taxes and see them improve schools and roads and healthcare.

I would agree with you *if* that's where the money goes. Unfortunately, with the incoming you know who's, I don't think we'll see any of that...
Plus, we got slammed this year with taxes and are completely unprepared. (My H started full time in September and now, not only did we jump tax brackets, we're *just* over the threshold for a lot of the deductions we used to get)
I'll start the morning off with a UO that will probably get me plenty of flames...
I'm not jumping on the "let's burn Betsy DeVos at the stake" bandwagon just yet. Yes, I think she gave some pretty ignorant answers to a lot of questions this week, and yes, it very much scares me that she gives the appearance of a lack of basic knowledge around education law and policy, but I'm not writing my opinion in concrete yet, and I'm certainly not signing any petitions against her after one evening's worth of information.
I am a huge supporter of school choice and I think that having a school choice advocate in office could do great things for education in our country. I do think it needs to be the right person, and I don't think that just being a supporter of choice makes her the right person for the job, but I definitely want more information before making a blanket decision to support or not support her.
So I guess the TL;DR version of my UO is: I don't hate Betsy DeVos. Yet.
akraus2015 I won't flame you but I do disagree. She lost any and all chances of redemption the moment she said she's not against a ban on gun free zones around schools and that guns should be allowed.

Yes, that's the big caveat. DNW to spend more on Dept. of Defense.

And I don't mind paying more taxes to provide services to people in need. I think that's what societies do and we would all end up benefiting from having healthy, well-fed, and well-educated masses.

That's a lot of nope, nope nope
This is where I'm at. Especially the reason she gave. Bears, really? I can't take her seriously after that. And the fact she doesn't understand how federal law applies to schools. There is a large amount of worry about disabled students in schools based on the things she has said.
akraus2015 - I don't think school choice is a bad thing. It can be good. Many arguments I've seen against her hinge on how bad things went in Michigan public schools based on her influence. With respect to that, I withhold judgement because likely things weren't going well in Michigan with or without her. Of all the cabinet picks, she's not high on my list of ones to fight over.

This, exactly. I have the same feeling about single-payer health care. There was a quote this week from a Canadian along the lines of he doesn't mind paying for people he doesn't know to get health care. That really stuck with me.

I think Michigan was/is such a hot mess because of the lax charter laws in Detroit. I was hoping that the person who took this position would be not only an advocate for choice, but also would tighten charter authorization laws so that bad charter (or any, for that matter) schools weren't able to operate. Even the few bad ones (especially the ones that have been open and failing for years and years) can give a really bad name to a generally great institution. For people who don't understand the inner-workings of the charter and voucher systems, it's hard to differentiate the bad from the good. There have been a lot of for-profit charter management organizations that have been allowed to operate in a lot of cities, that have done a lot of harm. St. Louis had one particular for-profit CMO that did quite a number on the schools here, and almost 10 years later we're still recovering from the bad stigma it gave to charter schools in general.

Yessss. Totally agree.
I guess I'm here to agree with everyone today in the UO thread. Whoops.

For me, I was willing to give Trump a chance until he began appointing people to postions they have NO business being in....ex: DeVos having no education experience, the head of the EPA not believing in global warming, the individual (can't remember name) being appointed to a vaccination committee but who is anti-vaccinations. Mostly thought, can't get over how inappropriate it is that his SIL was appointed a position.
I'm ignoring this entire inauguration. And maybe this is a UO or not....I don't see trump making it 4 years. At all.
Truthfully, I don't think Trump will make 4 years. I can see people rallying over his bullshit. Plus even if he does, the pendulum is going to swing so far left in the next administration (which also isn't a great thing). I just hope they don't waste time over established stuff like gay marriage and Roe v Wade.

Speaking of schools, I can not believe the way parents drive at drop off. There is a elementary school b my house and they are crazy! Flipping U-turns out of no where, darting across the street without so much as a glance, blowing through stop signs and almost hitting me and my dog. Like wtf people, most of these students are shorter than cars, take a little extra time.
