I didn't ask, we have had some pretty intense debates about Trump. I was afraid if I asked it would feel like a told you so. I just told him I was sorry, and I would help anyway I could finding another job. I am really curious though, so I might lightly broach the subject. In all honesty I wouldn't be suprised if he still liked him, and just gave him that allowance. I don't really understand the hold Trump has over some people. I have seen an embarrassing con man ever since the primaries, but so many really think he will make the country great again, whatever that means.
sagen, you're a good daughter and I hope that your father can find a job and that his situation improves. It seems that many people can somehow still find a way to make excuses for him, just the way they did during the election. I really don't know what it will take for people to see that he does not care one bit about them and that he will never lead the country based on their best interest.
This is a good reminder not to assume that your democratic senators and representatives are voting the way you want them to vote. It's bad enough that the republicans have majority in both house and senate - we need to swing some moderate republicans and not lose democrat votes in the meantime.

I read a good article last night about Trump's wall and how it will do nothing for the immigration issue and can even make it worse. I was trying to find it today but I can't remember where I read it. Basically, the real "issue" is not immigrants from Mexico (their economy has vastly improved and we now have more people going back to Mexico than coming in) but it's people seeking asylum from Guatemala, Honduros and El Salvador, which are in horrible shape with rampant poverty and gang-related crime. Mexico stops many of them at their border but of course some do get in and come to cross in to the US. They then apply for asylum but there is such a backlog that they can wait for 3-5 years for their case to be heard and during that time they cannot be sent back. So the real issue (which I think most thinking people know) is that our immigration system is way understaffed and can't handle the influx of people who are legitimately escaping horrible situations in those 3 countries. And if we build a wall, which will piss off Mexico because it's a slap in their face, Mexico is likely to stop stopping people at their borders and let everyone try to make it to the US. So the people who hate the "illegal immigrants" will likely see more as a result of Trump's wall. Good for those heartless bastards.
sleepymonkey, seriously, I don't understand why Trump and the republicans continue to make it seem like we have a huge illegal immigrant problem, when in fact (I know, I know, because they don't care about facts) the numbers show otherwise. I will be seriously pissed if my tax dollars are spent on this stupid damn wall (which they will because why the fuck would Mexico pay for it) instead of on things that are actually important.

PirateCat, I always say I would love to see the confusion and panic that would ensue if all of a sudden, one day, every undocumented immigrant suddenly vanished from the US. First, there would be a lot of confusion because a lot less people gone than Trumpers expect because they assume anyone with brown skin is here illegally. Second, the panic would set in when cost of many things goes up by a lot because unfortunately the way some businesses keep costs low is by hiring undocumented workers that they can pay below minimum wage and pay them under the table.
And is it just me or is the fact that one of the ways Trump claims Mexico will pay for the wall is to keep all remittances going there just plain icky? Isn't that just stealing people's hard earned money? And also, doesn't he realize that if he tried to do that, remittances would stop (because who would knowingly try to send money that is just going to get taken?) and then where we he get his wall money?
sleepymonkey , I'd love to read that article if you still have the link.
I'm looking for it because I really thought it was interesting. I know it's probably still on my ipad at home so if I can't find it here (I'm at work), I'll find it and post it tonight when I get home.
sleepymonkey, the whole stopping remittance thing is so shitty. The republicans are always touting smaller government, yet you can legislate what individuals do with their own money? Oh right, smaller government and individual freedom and free market only for white males.
I don't understand how people can put their vote or support behind a bunch of slogans and tag lines without fully doing the research and understanding how things will truly impact their lives and the lives of others.
I have also been trying to read articles from the other side to understand why people would make these choices and really still haven't found something that really helps me understand their goals other then they haven't been able to adapt with society
The world is not the same as it was many years ago...we can't go back to the "good old days" because that time doesn't exist....we can't turn back the clock on technology, worldly changes, population changes, etc.
people that think building a wall and repealing all the progress we made with legislature will get us back there...it will not turn it back to the Leave it to Beaver era.....and why would we want that anyway....
I just realized I spelled hiring highering, pregnancy brain is real. Thanks PirateCat, and I agree about the excuses, so many times in the primaries I thought that was it for him. The wall, what he said about Muslims, surely John McCain looser things for the slightly racist but still patriotic people, but nope. Not even hot mic admiting to sexual assult, nothing. That is why I feel like when the shit hits the fan it will magically be someone elses fault. If you couldn't find fault with him before he was elected, your too far gone. Maybe the people who voted not for Trump but against Hillary will see the error of their ways. I think the wall is just crazy on so many levels ::smh::
As far as what makes America great again, I wonder if it is the white baby boomers last grip at what they feel their America is like. Now it is more diverse, and headed more towards technology, and away from manufacturing.
chknma, I think a lot of it has to do with lack of education and awareness (and I don't mean that as a sweeping generalization about the republican population because I know that it is not true) and sadly I feel like the republicans have no incentive to improve our education system as they seem to be benefiting greatly in getting the votes they need.
It is also sad to see that this trend seems to be spreading globally, with the whole Brexit thing and the rise of far-right, nationalistic, anti-immigration (aka racist), anti-globalization leaders becoming popular in France, Germany and many other countries around the world. It is scary to think of the consequences.

I really feel like what brought about the rise of Trump and his thinking is that society as a whole has become so self-centered. People only care about themselves and only about how things are right now. That has caused people to vote for the person who will do what they feel is the best for themselves and not for the country/world as a whole. All they care about is that their taxes will (supposedly) be lowered and they will have a job. It doesn't matter if it is at the expense of many people who need financial assistance because "not my problem". There are people in other parts of the world suffering horrible atrocities at the hands of their government? Oh, well - that's their problem. No EPA and deny climate change so the environment will go to shit? I won't be around in 50-100 years so I don't care. It's all about instant gratification, these people can not stop and think about long-term ramifications.
The white house is defying court orders and the "judicial branch" is no longer even listed on their website under "our government". WTF is going on? How is this even possible?!

What I'm curious about is how they think they'll get away with it. Thus far they are, but the ACLU is gearing up (hell yeah $24m in donations), people are protesting, etc. Do they think it will all die down? Or are they creating chaos on purpose? I don't get the endgame.

icedtea, it almost feels as if they're creating chaos on purpose. But why? I don't know what the end game is supposed to be. And his supporters (who I have to keep reminding myself are in the minority) are getting even more fervent in their undying devotion to him and his agenda. I told MH that if this was a year ago, I would have decided against having another child. It's not that I regret this baby at all, it's just that I already fear so much for DD's future because of this maniac that they thought of having another child to worry about makes me want to cry.

You aren't alone in your feelings. I seriously wonder what world am I allowing this child to be born into.

I find it funny that I see all of these people posting memes and statements about how that can't believe people are so upset when DT is doing exactly what he said he would do during his campaign. More than half the country didn't vote for him so yeah we're upset. We didn't want this crap to begin with! And as for the people who voted for him just because they didn't like Hillary or they only vote Repulican but were convinced that he wouldn't/couldn't do the things he said he would, I blame those people the most of anyone. My mother was one of those people, although she still won't admit that she made a huge mistake.
PirateCat , that is a truly terrifying article, especially because it sounds exactly like what is happening. I feel sick.
It was eye-opening but I am too scared to read his other article (where he felt the need for cute animal pictures) right now. He seems like a smart guy and I need him to tell me what can be done to stop this.

PirateCat, I read the other article and I found the first one scarier. However, I am sure my white privilege has a lot to do with that. It's all horrible to think about.
lastkiss, that is truly terrifying. I expected a Trump presidency would be awful but this is so much worse than I could have imagined.
sleepymonkey, I was just wondering about those people who insisted that they disliked Trump but voted for him anyway, for whatever reason, and how they are feeling about things right now. I know that his supporters are probably too far gone and will excuse his behavior until it's too late, but how can the others not see the damage that he is causing? What will it take???

PirateCat, I think there are a lot of people who voted for him that are embarrassed. They're trying to rationalize his actions as "not that bad" because they don't want to admit that they contributed to this massive problem. They're trying to make themselves feel better. And I also feel like there are a lot of people who really don't see a problem with what is going on because Trump is making this country in to what they want it to be. They don't care is he turns in to a dictator as long as he's dictating that the only good thing to be is a straight white Christian male who was born here. And it's ok to be a straight white Christian woman, too, as long as you have are pro-birth and have dinner on the table for your man when he gets home from work.

The people that are embarrassed need to snap out of it, swallow their pride, and help us fight this. Grr.
