Related to registries: I was telling my mom about the insane baby shower I attended this weekend and mentioned how the hosts took forever to answer about a registry, and her comment was: "You don't have to buy off the registry."
I quickly told her people who make one know what they want and you should buy from there because otherwise you're shooting in the dark and might give them something they don't want or need. She mumbled something. Now I'm nervous she's going to buy us random stuff and then wonder where it is when she visits after baby is born because I'll definitely return it.
If people buy shit off my registry, I'm asking for a gift receipt because it's going back. M's godmother told me that MIL & his cousin were trying to buy me a car seat that was cheaper and not on my registry for a shower gift. NO FUCKING WAY. Don't you think I did hours upon hours of research about this car seat.
Blood fucking boiling. Thank god she shot them down.
I was pretty convinced I wanted the K'tan but now I'm wavering between it and the Mei Tai. Hmm. I already have an hand-me-down Ergo and a ring sling (which I wasn't a big fan of when I tried it with my nephew).
I tried a K'Tan first and didn't like it at all. It felt too tight but not secure enough at the same time. I preferred the adjustability of the Mei Tai and tying the sashes was NBD.
I very well may have had the wrong size K'Tan, but I was happy with my choice to switch.

Car seat is the #1 thing to NOT go off-registry for. Parents pick specific seats for a reason! Glad she took care of that for you.
onesweetworld, I don't care much if people use my registry for most stuff but I will lose it if they do with something like a car seat. You don't get to decide which expensive safety options we use, random person! Gr.

I think my FIL and his gf are buying the car seat. I'm hoping my mom told them where to find it on my registry.

Exactly. Just because you found something cheaper, doesn't mean it's a good idea to give it to me.

Yes, and if you do go off registry, include a damn gift receipt. I had duplicates of some things and others I didn't need that I had no idea where they were from. That stuff got regifted when I went to a shower (she wasn't at mine) and the mom-to-be didn't have a registry.
LadyNymeria that does seem to be a common complaint about the k'tan. The mei tai sash looks simple and more versatile but I love how cozy the k'tan and similar stretchy wraps look for the baby early on. Maybe I'll just have to try both after the baby is here and return one.

So I was MIA today because I started to train the girl who'll fill in for me while I'm out on leave. It totally got in the way of my TCF time. Not cool.

In other news, does anyone here watch The Affair?! Tell me someone does. I just watched Sunday nights episode and holy shit. That was some sick acting.

We do but we are a few episodes behind. Now I can't wait to watch!!
The actors that play Noah and Helen absolutely kill it in this episode! Let me know once you've seen it!

Yes to everything you've all said. Do not buy a different version/brand of things on the registry. We chose it for a reason. Include gift receipts for everything because duplicates happen (and I want to return the random shit you bought which I don't need.)
This is not difficult. Why do I feel some people need to take a shower guest 101 class?

I watched seasons 1 and 2. Loved it. Don't currently have SHOtime but will catch up when we get it back!

Anecdotally, I think older generations tend to go off registry esp. for baby showers. I have also noticed that friends who announce the sex of the baby pre-shower get more off registry things than those that don't reveal or don't know. People want to buy cute gendered clothes and toys and don't buy practical things unless they must. That's just what happens in my friend group though.

I have a feeling I'm going to have a ton of cute girly clothing and I'm going to hate it all.
I haven't watched last night's episode yet! Probably tonight.
In other TV news, is anyone watching Taboo on FX?! Only 2 episodes in (the 3rd was last night--haven't watched that yet either) but I'm intrigued. And plus, Tom Hardy.

As far as shopping for other people baby showers goes I tend to buy 2 or 3 things from their registry and then make or buy 1 other thing. Like for my stepsister I got her bottles, pacis, and burp cloths from Her registry and then crocheted a blanket and bought super cute sock monkey pjs. I feel like it's a good way to do things. Things they need plus a little surprise item too.

If you know the person well, that makes sense and can work well. Very cool you can crochet! I can't sew, knit, crochet, any of that.
^^ I will add that the sizing is kind of off. I have a medium and it feels a little loose, so I got a small as well and that feels a little tight. DH used my medium and it is pretty tight on him but he is able to get in it. Now I use both of them, but I make sure that he is only in a onesie when I wear the small so he doesn't get too hot
If there's any chance to try one on before you buy it that is what I recommend
This is the issue I've had with mine. But I also really love it so it's a problem I can live with.

Dumb question, but how can you really try it in without a baby? I got a large and tried it out with a stuffed animal and it worked really well but I'm worried that since baby will obviously be much heavier it'll stretch it and feel too loose
You can put it in the dryer to shrink it back down a bit if it starts to stretch at little too loose.
