My birthday party confession is I don't think C's first birthday party was worth it. It was so much time and money and H and I were exhausted and stressed and miserable the whole day. I barely remember it and obviously C won't. I'm on board with waiting until he is old enough to have friend parties. MIL did offer to do it at her house this year which is an hour away but she has a beautiful pool and sun room. I think I might just take her up on it. Just immediate family, cake, grilling...theme will be minimal. It's a far drive for my family since we all live on the same street, but I just can't have it at my house again.
If I had someone offer up their house with a pool I'd totally do that! Maybe your family can all carpool together? An hour isn't too bad of a drive.

Food: I don't know how theme-y you want to get. LBB's best friend did a straight lego party and the only "themed" food they had were lego candy
You could go "theme" with foods in the movie like tacos, sausages, and drumsticks or lego themed with sandwiches or pizza shaped like a block
Dec: So we were pretty heavy Ninjago, but most of the things we did could easily translate to regular lego. Like sticking eye stickers on balloons and the plates:
LBB's friend's party had these:
LBB wanted me to make him a sign, so I did this, but you could do something similar that says "Everything is Awesome" instead of "Ninjas Never Quit"
Cake: I sent the bakery an image that they printed on the cake. LBB's friend just got a regular cake from Costco and put those lego candy pieces all over it.
Activities: Both our parties had coloring books and crayons. We both made the coloring books - there are all sorts of printables online.
She made her crayons, I bought mine from etsy. But either way, the kids LOVED having lego crayons.
LBB's friend's party had a pin the face on the minifigure and a minifigure pinata.
But really, all you need is to put out a bucket of legos and the kids will be happy. Save
billyhorrible thank you for the photos. I'm going to use the plate and balloon ideas you showed and also do a lego cake. For the food I think I'll just keep it simple and not do it as themed.
