I'm having a hard time with boy names that I love. Jasper is a one of the best we have come up with so far and seems to be H's favorite. I do like it but I don't know if I quite love it.
We both like the name Jack (but not John) and I have seen some references to Jack being a nickname for Jasper (e.g., Jack Daniel's given name was Jasper) but I don't know if it feels like a bit of a stretch. Jas/Jaz(z) seems to be much more common and natural but I don't like them as much.
I also have this nagging feeling that Jasper sounds like a great name for a dog or a cat... am I crazy?

Jack is not an intuitive nickname for Jasper. I don't see the point in choosing a name like Jasper and then calling him Jack, which is extremely common in little kids.
Why does it need a nickname? Do you have to pick a nickname now?
I like Jasper. It's not something I would choose but I like it.
cabbagecabbage that's how I'm feeling too. I suppose I could see him just going by Jasper and not having a nickname, but I also don't want to dislike a nickname that people might call him by.
The intuitive nickname for my son's name is not one I care for, but no one calls him that except my one brother who lives out of state. We call him by his full name and everyone follows our lead. That may change when he is older but it will really be up to him at that point.

All the Jaspers I know go by their full name. If they have a nickname, it's unrelated to Jasper, so I really wouldn't worry about people calling him something other than Jasper.
I like Jasper! I don't think it needs a nickname, though I could see how something like Jazz might develop naturally. But I think that is a cool nickname I'm no help. I think Jasper as it stands is a great choice, and not a pet name
I haven't met any Jaspers, that I know of, but I feel like it's one of those names that don't need a nickname. J/Jay is another option if you want a pet-name. I wouldn't worry about whether it's a popular animal name or not. There's a lot of names that are high on popularity charts for both humans and pets (Charlie, Sophie, Jack- which is #7 for male dogs, Lily, Chloe, etc.)
I'm concerned this Jack as a nickname for Jasper thing came from General Hospital... Jasper Jax is a character and he goes mostly by Jax. Aside from that, Jasper has zero relation to the name John (or Jack).
I like Jasper but I'd have some trouble committing, too! But, it's a solid name with a nice history (it came from the name of a Magi).

Haha I didn't know about General Hospital Jasper/Jax (definitely do not want Jax). I did know about Jasper in Twilight, although I haven't read or watched any of them, but I hear at least he was a good vampire.
If you both like the name Jack, why not use that? I prefer Jack to Jasper.
I'm not crazy about how popular it is (and I'm leaning towards not using it as a nickname either, especially if there will be a bunch other Jacks his age, but my H needs more convincing). Most other names on our names are pretty popular, too, which makes me hesitant. I guess our taste in names is just not that special.
#1 - 10/10 | #2 - lost but not forgotten 10/12 | #3 - 7/13 | #4 - 5/15 Diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer 12/19/16 Finished with chemo 4/27/17! Double mastectomy summer 17 Radiation fall 17
So Jasper is still the front runner although H isn't totally committed to not using Jack as a nickname (he comes from a family where everyone has a one-syllable nickname).
The other two names we've narrowed down to are Wesley and Sebastian.
Between Jasper, Wesley and Sebastian, Jasper is by far my favorite. If your H really needs a one-syllable nickname, Jay works.
And I don't think the dog name is a problem. As PPs have said, there are plenty of crossover names that aren't more dog names than people names. I know a family with a Lily, Jasper and Bella, and I have to think twice to remember which is the dog (Bella). All good people names.
lormor haha yea I'm definitely getting over the dog name thing. Jay is ok but one of our closest friends is named Jay so I'm not sure about that one. I think I would be okay with Jasper as long as we are not going into it with Jack as a definite nickname. We can play it by ear and see what fits.
Most were already mentioned, but here are some others that are used more often in other countries.
Baschi (Swiss) Basse (Bahs-eh, Swedish) Seba (Polish, not sure prn) Sebo (Hungarian, not sure prn) Seppo/Sepi (are Finnish diminutives of Sebastian) Stian (not related to Sebastian, but it's a Norse name that means wanderer; Stee-awn is how I've heard it pronounced)
It would probably feel random to others, but I'd be fine with nns from Augustus too, since the name Sebastian is the Greek translation of the title. I just don't like those nns as much.
Also Jasper is on my long list, maybe to use as a mn since it's a family name. Also thought of Kasper instead since there's so many Jasper in the family.
What do all the Jaspers in your family go by? Just all Jasper?

Sebastian is really growing on me, although I think it is the most popular of the three choices. Sepi is adorable.

Sebastian is the most popular; it's sitting around #35 for the national stats. Wesley is about #126 and Jasper is #215.

It is apparently the most popular name in Puerto Rico! It didn't even make it into the top 100 in my state in 2015, but it was 78 in 2014. They don't have 2016 up yet so who knows.
