In the town i live in now it's 6-8. When I was in Jr high it was 7-9. My senior year they brought 9th grade up to the high school so now the middle schools there are 7-8.
I went to a school that was K–8, so there the line was kind of blurry.
If they were all in the same building I would probably call that not having a middle school. If they were separate buildings then the younger age of the older building.
When I lived in my first city before I was in MS it was K-2 primary, 3-5 intermediate, and 6-8 middle, then 9-12 high. When we moved it was 7-9 middle. When I was in 8th they built a new school that was 7-8, but have since added 6th.
Where I live now middle starts at 5th, which I think is insane. Middle school is the worst.
I really like K-8 schools. Twelve and thirteen-year-olds have a lot to offer to younger students and it gives them leadership opportunities. Organizing events, setting up for assemblies, tech support for teachers and events, learning buddies; I cant imagine my school without the older students.
Just hyperbole. IMO 10 year olds don't belong in middle school. When I was in middle school that was when the drinking, drugs, sex started. I don't like 6th graders being exposed to that much less 5th graders. Hopefully not all schools are like that though. Maybe starting them earlier bypasses some of that. Still I hate that about our district.

Middle school is more of an educational practice than a building assignment. Most public schools start middle school around 6th; many of the private schools do around 5th.
Our district currently does a "middle school team approach" and middle school curricula starting in 6th even though the students are still housed K-6th for now.

I know things are different "these days" but sex and drugs were not a problem in our jr high. This boils down to the kid. You're always going to have the kids who are into it (drugs/sex) and the kids who aren't ready for it no matter where/when they hit jr high/high school. No need to panic until you need to panic.

It depends on if you're talking city or village. In the city it's 7-8. In a small village there is one school and they'll group grades together in classrooms, or even teach all grades in one classroom. Or, if there are fewer than 10 kids in the village the state will close the school, and the parents are SOL because there is no road system and they might have to be flown into the nearest open school. I know, this is very #regional.

I think a lot of it is the culture of the school. I am 41 so it was a while ago I was in middle school. I wasn't involved but the peer pressure was strong. I remember lying on a drug survey that I had smoked marijuana so when I passed the survey forward they wouldn't make fun of me.
Anyway DD won't go to middle at that age. Her school goes through 6th so the earliest will be 7th. But I know at least 2 people who have moved out of the district because they don't want their soon to be 5th graders going to MS.
Growing up, my school system was elementary = K-3, middle = 4-7, and high school = 8-12. Now it's lower elementary = K-2, upper elementary = 3-5, middle = 6-8, and high school = 9-12.
Most schools in our part of VA though are the typical K-5, 6-8, and 9-12.
