So we have a full set of the Portmeirion Pomona dishes (dinner plates, salad plates, dessert plates, pasta bowls, oatmeal bowls, small dipping bowls, salad bowls and these other shallow bowls) but I do have some additional bowls that I use a lot for things one would want to eat out of a deep bowl (cereal, soup, etc.) They are amazing and are basically massive mugs with handles on the side. I find that we eat a lot of stuff out of bowls and I end up having to buy special bowls that are not part of a larger set because the sets that I like have only smaller bowls.
Basically this is a post about bowls.
I actually picked up a set of Anchor Hocking soup mugs when they were at Costco a few months ago bc, like you, I find that there are certain things (cereal, soup, chili) that demand a deep bowl with a handle and the pretty sets don't usually come with those.

We have white with a blue boarder Platzgraff but they are showing lots of chips and are kind of heavy. I've been eyeing up Corelle sets to replace them someday.
I like the Happy Days set but DH assumes it's because I liked that tv show, which has nothing to do with anything since it's not like Fonzie is on the plate
For some reason, H and I eat ice cream exclusively out of Fiestaware oversized mugs. We eat everything else (soup, cereal) out of bowls. I have no idea why.

This felt relevant.
We always eat ice cream out of coffee mugs too - portion control and the handle means your hand doesn't get too cold like it would holding the bowl. (unless you sit at a table but we're always on the couch or in bed)
I have an all white C&B set from my wedding. A couple plates have chipped, but we still use them. I never entertain, so it feels like I should probably hold on to these plates until 2040, yes?

I've always wanted to do fiestaware because my ex randomly ended up with one plate of theirs and it was my favorite because I could microwave the shit out of it and it wouldn't be hot.

We have had ours since 2006 and they are chipped and getting to the point of breaking easily (prob from the heat of the dishwasher), which is why we are replacing. If yours are still in good shape there's no need to change.
Im going to sound like an old lady, but I love vintage dishes. Replacements.com is a great source for old sets.
Absolutely- they're also really amazing people- the owners, I mean. So in addition to being a cool store, you can feel good about supporting this business. It's a small business, not a corporate behemoth, with good business and social practices.
Thanks for posting! We have H's grandmother's china. I just looked it up, it's Syracuse sy45. They don't have much in stock, but I'll keep looking!
Our everyday dishes are PB great white. They've held up well. I got some colorful PB stoneware bowls and mugs and they have chipped and just not stood up well. I can't wait to replace them.
karenwalker, if you let them know what you're looking for, they will alert you when they get new pieces. Also, if you ever get over that way, the store is amazing. And there's a Vietri outlet nearby.

We bought a set of all white from Ikea this summer. I think it was $20 for a 20 piece set. And it just came with plates, salad plates and bowls. I like the all white for a clean look. It also matches all of our white platters we got from Target. It's kind of boring but it's what DH and I agreed on. Plus we have lots of fun coffee mugs that we use daily.
I have a mix of plain white from Old Time Pottery, Navy Blue Fiesta Wear and my great-grandmothers Blue Danube china (half of it is real and half is not). I have some blue glassware I use to be fancy.
I'm kind of anti-Corell with the exception of the small snack bowls I use for the kids. Something about the feel of them kind of eeks me out, they're...squeaky or something? IDK, I can't explain it. We had them growing up and they just aren't for me. I also like a heavier plate, but it's possible I'm secretly a medieval wench who wants a hearty platter of FOOD (in addition to being tacky).

We got these last year too. They scratch kind of easily but I don't really care because they were so cheap. They go well with everything and seem pretty sturdy otherwise.
We replaced our set a couple of years ago because the stoneware I registered for from Crate and Barrell had totally chipped and the glaze was cracked. I was disappointed that C&B didn't stand by the product and replace them.
This is why I love fiesta. They have replaced anything that chipped after a three minute phone call
You know I'm a fiestaware addict. So that's always my answer.
The kids eat off them and they survive Scout The Dog sneak attacks, so A+ for durability.
ETA: we have turquoise, lapis, sunflower, lemongrass, poppy and tangerine.
Fiestaware is so durable, I love it. My parents have had a mix of colors for years that has survived many teenage boys banging the crap out of plates going into the cabinet, etc.
DH and I have been meaning to buy all new fiestaware since our cheaper set of plates and bowls has begun to chip. It goes on sale often at kohls and Macy's, but I've just been lazy with deciding on colors.
