The underside of one boob is really sore. Dr Google seems to think it's either a blocked duct (but I don't have any bumps) or mastitis (but no fever). Has anyone had something similar or have any advice?

Treat it like a blocked duct - it could be way far in there. Massage, wet heat, nurse often on that side, take lecithin.
If that doesn't help in a day or two or it starts to feel warm and look red (not from massage or heat), call your doctor.

This question and answer couldn't have come at a more perfect time for me! I've got pain deep in one boob that I've noticed a little for the past day or two and it's getting more noticeable. It's not really bad though. I'm hoping it might be normal (since I didn't really manage to breastfeed my first) but am a little nervous that it will get worse. I hope this advice works for both of us caer!!
How long do you all typically nurse on one side? I know the advice is until that side is empty, but how long does that usually take you?
I combo feed C. We ended up in a cycle of him not being full after nursing and supplementing with formula. Right now, we nurse during the day. He typically nurses each side for 20-30 mins each. (Granted, he is a bit of a lazy eater, always had been. Also, we've been using a nipple shield since day one.) Most of the time he gets an ounce or two of formula after. At night, it takes longer. I've started doing formula at night, then pumping. (Only time I pump. Typically get 4 ounces total.) Oh, and he's 6 weeks.
I know every baby is different, and it is mostly ok for us that it takes about an hour to feed him, because I'm a teacher and am off until August. Just curious if it's taking significantly longer than others.

sterl724 Max nurses for 20 minutes at the most on one side. Usually it's more like 8-10. Feeding sessions even if he nurses both sides take 15-30 minutes, including burping.
He would be considered an efficient nurser, though.
sterl724 my twins took forever to nurse, about an hour total (for the first 4 months or so) and J is faster at anywhere between 20-45 minutes depending on how sleepy he is. I imagine it partly depends on how often you are feeding (lots of smaller meals vs larger ones), we nurse every three hours usually. Sometimes I nurse more frequently and he doesn't eat for as long.
sterl724, it's so variable. My DD currently averages 15-20 from one side, DS liked to take his time and was more like 30-40 a side at this age. Time between last feeding and time of day (longer evening sessions for us) make a difference too.

It looks like my evening supply has increased with the increase in water. I've been able to delay the cluster feeding until 7:30 so I'll take it. This will do until I go back to work. There's only 6 potentially crying bedtimes left between now and then so we'll have to deal.

This, especially the lecitin...that stuff works wonders for plus sometimes I find it helpful to kind of "plank" my boob over my baby and have him help me hoover it out. I also really like to use my Booby Tubes when I feel like a clog might be forming.

This is B as well. I hope it stays this way! DD was the complete opposite of an efficient nurser. She was in the boob all the time.
caer I had a motn though about your under boob pain. Did you wear a different brand lately? Make sure all of your breast tissue is lifted up and into the cup so none gets pinched by the band.
I haven't been wearing anything new but I'll double-check the boob placement. Thank you for the MOTN thoughts on my boob!
Evening supply just tanked 2 nights in a row. What the heck. I did a power pump for an hour and only got 30 ml! Uhhh. I'm using a new pump, Spectra, so maybe my body is adjusting. Day time supply is fine.

It took her 40 minutes, but baby finally drank 1 oz out of a bottle! Without tears!
DH was right and we just had to get over the crying hump without me caving and offering the boob. We did that yesterday afternoon and now she'll allow the bottle without the waterworks.
Also, she seems to like the Munchkin level 2 bottle/nipple so thank you @priss08 for suggesting that brand!
Does anyone have experience with babies and pathological reflux? J spits up A LOT and is not a "happy spitter." He will essentially vomit hours after eating after being really uncomfortable. We have his one month appointment tomorrow but I was curious if anyone here had a baby treated for reflux.

Report back with a Spectra review in a few days! Which one did you get? I am currently renting a Symphony, but am considering getting a Spectra for when I go back to work. Nevermind that I already own two Pump in Styles.

It's amazing. Very similar feel and sound to the hospital grade pump I was renting which was the medela symphony. Also very similar output. I love that it has a rechargeable battery so I can walk around with the machine. It's made pumping with company more comfortable too- I just cover up and can move around if needed.
I'm now thinking of getting a carry case for pumps - a Sarah Wells bag- so I can feel prepared and confident to pump in public when I need to.
Eta it's the blue one. S1 I think. The one with the rechargeable battery inside.

I recently got an S2 and am loving it so far. I also have a PISA, but am more comfortable and get more milk with the Spectra. It's quieter and I like that it has more adjustable features.
bookish I used the PISA for the twins and thought it was good. I love my spectra! its a lot quieter and more comfortable for me.
@justinslovo, that is great to hear it has helped! what were his symptoms before the zantac? did your doctor have reservations about putting him on meds? How long did it take for the meds to start working?
mikaela20skkamacbaby Thanks guys! I think I will bite the bullet and get the Spectra. I didn't mind my PISA last time around, but it is kind of loud and I was always paranoid that the students outside my door could hear my pump. The noise was also distracting when I would try to read something complex.
amacbaby Jack has been on Zantac for 2ish weeks now. It is amazing the difference in his temperament. You can tell he is in way less pain. He still spits up but it is far less.
Any questions feel free to ask.
I'm waiting for a referral to a specialist - I hope I can finally get him on Zantac for his reflux.

I swear mine said different words all the time. Last time I used it DD1 asked what it was saying!
Thanks for the info @justinslovo! I feel like Jackson has a lot of the signs except weight loss/eating hesitance. In fact he seems to want to eat more when it is bothering him and he seems to be growing fine. It will be interesting to hear what his doctor says
amacbaby we've been dealing with reflux for a while and since DS was gaining weight really well his doctor was hoping to not have to medicate it. So we have been trying all kinds of things. Keeping him elevated during feeds and after ( we bottle feed), burping him every half ounce of food (makes feedings longer) and got a wedge for is crib when he is sleeping. We saw a slight improvement but no enough so hoping we can get the meds now.
I believe his reflux has contributing to him not nursing well. But that's just my theory and maybe me grasping at straws for a reason. Will be interesting to see any improvement with meds.
MH just gave T his first bottle! He did great but he said he probably wanted more. I am only getting about 2-2 1/2 ounces when pumping. Wondering if I have to pump longer. Also, it hurts to pump. I already switched to a smaller cup size. Wondering if I have to go even smaller?

How long are you pumping? Do you have your pump turned up too high? And are you putting lanolin or coconut oil on your nipples before you pump?

Pumping for 15 minutes. I turned it down this last time and it seemed to help but my nipple is still being pulled in really far. I am not putting anything on my nipples before. I will try that next time!

Definitely lube your nipples up. What pump do you have? I have a medela and only turn it up to the second whole line.
