Thanks so much ladies! Today I've felt less stressed about it reading all your encouraging words. Have a bit of a decrease in production today but I'm making sure to eat more and drink lots of tea and water.

@justinslovo I take a lot when I have clogs to clear - 2 pills, three times a day. I don't remember the mg but on the ones I have, the listed serving size is one pill a day.
mikaela20 the thread about lactation cookies on the Pregnancy board has some anecdotal evidence about oatmeal and brewers yeast. Maybe some oatmeal for breakfast and a beer after dinner if you have them in the house? Just to see how that goes. Although the cookie recipe over there sounds delicious.
Talk to me about Vitamin D drops. My pedi mentioned that I should start A on them but I'm not really sure what to do. Also, any brand recommendations?
I tried them with DS but he got so gassy and uncomfortable that I stopped. Having a screaming baby for hours (only happened the days I gave them to him, I experimented to narrow it down) was not worth it to me. Instead I just made sure to get a decent amount of sun since he was a spring baby as well and sun was easy to come by. By the winter months I focused on foods with vitamin D added so he was still getting it. I'll probably try again with this baby but I won't prioritize the d drops over comfort.
mikaela20 did your LC tell you to pump for only 15? I was told to pump for 20 every session. As for supply increase tips, I did actual fenugreek pills, mothers milk tea, oatmeal and so much water you think you can't possibly drink anymore. I had to eat oatmeal for breakfast 4 days a week with ds and it does work.
I'll see if I can find the fenugreek dosage I did. I was taking 15 pills a day at one point.
I'm hoping with the help of you ladies I am more successful with nursing this time around. I want to give it another shot as this will be our last. I think it was much more difficult with my DD too because I was induced with her at 37 weeks and she was SGA due to high BP the whole pregnancy. She was so small at DC that I resorted right away with supplementing in which they had me use an SNS to help stimulate my milk to come in which was AWFUL!!!! We were encouraged to feed her every two hours and it literally took an hour to feed her via the SNS and then we would only be able to rest (all 3 of us) an hour before we had to feed her again. I wouldn't do an SNS again if they offered. It was too traumatic for me.
Poppy32617 that sounds really hard and so exhausting. Is your BP lower this time around? Any size concerns?
It was hard and scary but thankfully with this one they put me on meds right away and knock on wood my BP has been great. He's in the 62% at 34w4d US he was 5lbs 8oz . They'll do another US at 38 weeks again before they induce at 39 weeks . I'm very curious to see how big he is now!

I am having trouble telling when the breast is empty. DD never really releases - usually she falls asleep and I pop her off. I will re-offer the same boob after burping, then repeat and if she's still hungry I'll offer the other boob. Is that normal? Is there an internal feeling I should have to determine empty vs full?

I did similarly with DS except that I would switch boobs after burping then go back to side one if he still seemed to need. I never had a feeling of being empty. I also did not leak and rarely experienced too full feelings after the first few weeks but he grew well (slowly but on a steady curve) and was definitely getting enough. Everyone is different, some people get more indicators than others.
I have been having a cup a day but want more. DD2 is still snoozing away most of the day, so I don't think the caffeine is doing much to her.
With DD1 I really didn't monitor my caffeine intake all that much. I regularly had 2 medium iced coffees a day, sometimes plus some (ie I had 1 coffee and 1 espresso drink or something like that, and I never thought twice about caffeine from other sources). As long as it didn't seem to be affecting her I wasn't worried. Whatever I needed to get through the day!
How much spit up/throw up is normal? Sometimes it's only a little but alot of times it looks like everything he ate gets thrown up right after.
It depends. IIRC, the general rule is that as long as they are gaining weight appropriately and having enough wet and dirty diapers, it's ok. If it seems to bother them, it can be a sign of reflux. However, my kid was what they call a "happy spitter," meaning he threw up Exorcist style constantly but didn't have reflux and gained like a champ.

The pediatrician told us today that a normal amount of spit up can be caught in a tablespoon (if you had those kinds of reflexes). More than that is reflux (or vomiting); in those cases, it sounds like making sure baby is upright after a meal helps but I am sure there are other steps to take if that's a regular occurrence.

I figured it was throw up. Uhh another hurdle for us. Thanks! I will bring it up to his doctor next week.

How long do sore nipples last? I never went through the nipple pain with ds so this is uncharted territory.
The scabs that were there are gone and I was hoping once that happened they'd feel better but they do not. I think it might be a latch issue, but she has the smallest damn mouth and I'm not sure how much farther she can actually open it. But I also think it could just be general soreness.
If the sores have healed, I'd guess her latch is OK. But it couldn't hurt to check with a LC. DS is 11 days old and I have one breast that just started feeling better yesterday. The other is still painful, but I'm guessing I just have another day or two for it to feel better.
I believe two weeks is common for nipple soreness at first.

It was a couple weeks for me with DS. He really tore them up the first few days with his tongue tie but after the scabs healed things got better after a couple days if I'm remembering correctly.
How do you wake up a baby to eat? We're trying to switch A's days and nights but I can't get her to stay awake long enough to eat even though she's been napping for 3 hours. I've changed her diaper, undressed her, tickled her hands/feet and nothing is working long enough to get her to latch
Strip her down to her diaper, cold wash cloth on her back.

The nurse ran a wipe all over B's arms and chest, that seemed to work

DD doesn't like when I sit her up to burp her. If I've done all of the above, I do that. I also mess with her mouth and face, tickle her neck, just annoy her.
Okay. So...I need some help. It's not exactly about feeding the baby, but in the same family and may lead to me giving up sooner than I wanted to on breastfeeding.
I pump exclusively, and for 2ish weeks, it worked perfectly. I have a bit of an oversupply, but I'm not sure how long I'll be able to breastfeed once I am back at work, so I have just been freezing.
Suddenly, I'm leaking THROUGH pads, bras and shirts 2 hours after pumping. I have thrown 4 shirts in the laundry today, and it's kind of trapped me in the house. I pumped 2 hours ago (15 oz- my baby takes maybe 4 oz at a meal) and my shirt of completely soaked (I mean- looks like I was hit with a large water balloon) and I'm pumping again. Help! How do I stop the leaking?!
erinshelley21 I didn't think of maxi pads. I'll have to try that out. I also will buy the milk catching stuff.
I don't think I started leaking until about 10 min before the 2 hour mark. Things got very wet fast though.
I guess I don't know how to chill on the pumping a little. I don't mind having an oversupply in theory, but I'm pumping over double of what my baby eats each day. And I'd like to not be pumping every 2 hours, but don't know how to make that a reality.

glb30 get the milk catchers, try the pads, and start stretching the time between pumping sessions slowly. Like go for an extra 15 minutes between each feeding for a couple of days, then another 15 minutes, etc.
You could also try pumping only one side at a time (pump the other a little just to relieve some pressure,) which would mimic block feeding. This would not immediately help the leaking, of course, but could definitely help over time.

glb30 I had to pump every 2 hours with ds. I agree with kristhegirl that stretching time between pumping sessions would be a good idea. If you're at home I would shove an actual towel in your shirt. I don't mess with pads at home. I just use burp clothes and rags.
kristhegirlerinshelley21 thank you! I am going to start slowly stretching these out and dealing with the leaking with some of your suggestions. I know this doesn't sound like that big of a deal, but I was melting down briefly....
