DS is crazy today, DH is in a pissy mood, and I'm still dealing with sinus issues. And damn it's cold out here today. Hope everyone is having a better Saturday!!!

It's really cold here too. I refuse to leave the house, even though DD wanted to go out. DH was going to put together a small ikea table for her, but of course one of the screws is missing.
I just did a bunch of online shopping today instead. Mainly clothes for DD for the spring and summer. It will be nice when she stops/slows down growing and doesn't need a new wardrobe each season. I try to buy stuff bigger, hoping it will fit the following year. It is just now starting to work out that way a little bit. I should probably let go of the idea of a weekend getaway this month after all this though. Boo responsibilities.
You guys. This was one of the funniest things I read while pregnant with DD and I'm laughing even harder now. A good reminder to not get too caught up in the birth plan of your dreams! End goal: baby healthy, mom healthy. Win.

I saw a story this weekend told by a woman who was either a nurse or a PA or something medical who either works on labor and delivery or something closely related. She and her H went to a birth class and the instructor had everyone go around and say what their "worst-case scenario" was for their birth. Everyone's giving answers like "an epidural", "a c-section", etc. It gets to this woman and she says "both me and the baby die". Everyone had insane looks on their face except the instructor who basically said "Finally! This is what I was looking for!"
Good reminder we have it good in terms of medicine and advancement here, but in reality, do whatever you need to have healthy mom and baby.

OK so I booked our plane tickets this morning. BTDT ladies, please give me all the advice on flying with a 24 month old. Carseat or no carseat? Stroller to gate check? What snacks and activities kept the meltdowns away?
ETA: which stroller do I bring? My shiny new Uppa Baby Vista (its going to be our double when LO 2 arrives) or my trusty City Mini GT?
i'm late here, but we just flew with DD (turned 2 on 2/23). we checked the car seat at the counter (not gate checked), didn't take on flight. we have always taken it on previous flights (if she had a seat), but we finally came to terms with the fact that she will never sleep on a flight and we are all more comfortable without the car seat. this is very different from most of my parenting decisions, but i know that even if we have the seat, she will spend about 5 minutes during takeoff and landing (during which she will cry) and 0 other minutes sitting in it. more power to those who enforce sitting in the seat for the whole flight and/or who have kids who sleep anywhere other than in a dark room with a sound machine at scheduled times, but that's not us! not promoting this line of thinking, but it's where we are right now.
snacks/activities: i pack DD's backpack with diapers, wipes, snacks, and toys/activities. take a snack cup or snacks that don't get crushed. we like lara bars, goldfish in a snack cup, and pouches. now that i think about it, we should pack our bentgo kids next time. target has those small coloring books with crayons and stickers in the dollar bins that are fantastic for flights. travel is the only time we bust out the ipad - we download tv shows and a movie in advance. sometimes i take a small book. those melissa and doug water paint books are also perfect for flying - you know what i'm talking about?
i can never decide about the stroller - we always end up with our city select, but i'm so afraid it will get damaged - i've heard horror stories! if i were you i'd take the city mini and gate check it. definitely get a bag for it, so that the bag gets ripped and stained, and not the stroller. same if you are checking a car seat.
agm04, I'm with you on the kids not sleeping except in a dark room with sound machine at your DD's age. My infants would always sleep in the infant car seat on flights, but once they hit 9 months or so that was over.
However, now that they're a little bit older, a miraculous thing happened on our flight back from Hawaii last week - both kids went to sleep on the plane, in regular seats! They're now 3 and 4.5 and haven't slept on a flight since they were babies. They didn't have a nap that day and our flight was at 4:35 pm and landed back home at midnight. I was expecting cranky overtired kids. But I changed them into their pajamas halfway through and maybe that was a pscychological clue or something - they both feel asleep for the last couple hours of the flight. Yet we're fine waking up to walk off the plane to baggage claim - we didn't bring a stroller. It was an end-of-vacation miracle
How was Disneyland? Is that where you guys went? We're going for a day trip in a couple weeks.
sdlaura whoa talk about the stars aligning! this gives me some hope. we'll be traveling to chile in december (10+ hour flight) with DD at 2.75 and the new baby at 6 months, and i already have anxiety about it.
Disneyland was SO FUN! we got our huge meltdown out of the way the first morning, and it was mostly smooth sailing from there. lol. how was your trip? did the kids warm up to the kids club?
agm04, I think your trip to Chile will be right at a sweet spot - my babies have always been really easy on planes up until they're mobile (assuming I have an infant carseat for them to sleep in - but on international flights you can get the bassinet thing, right?), and then once both kids hit almost 3, they were suddenly willing to watch movies or TV for hours straight. For us, the hardest time for air travel was between 9 months and 2.5 years. I think you have timed that trip perfectly (or as perfectly as you can get with two very small children).
I'm so glad your Disneyland trip went well! I think it was smart to do it now rather than at 30+ weeks!
Hawaii was awesome. The Disney resort was not exactly authentic Hawaii but had everything there that we needed to have fun and relax. We normally go all over the place seeing things on vacation, but for this one we didn't rent a car and stayed at the resort for the full six nights. Every morning we woke up, had breakfast in our room since there was a kitchen (and one morning we did the character breakfast), played in the pools/water slides/splash pad/beach until lunchtime, and then the kids took a great nap after lunch.
They did warm up a bit to the kids club, and ultimately we used it four times for two hours each. So DH and I got to have two early dinners alone, plus go to the spa for massages, and spent a couple hours one afternoon by the adult pool by ourselves. DD (4.5) was the perfect age for the kids club and didn't want to leave one night, so we came back to get her later. She was really into the arts and crafts. DS only had one accident on the last night he was there, so that was fine too. Everyone was worn out from the sun and swimming and slept great the whole trip. And amazingly my fair kids didn't get sunburned - I think the afternoon nap helped with that. People were complimenting us on the plane on the way back about our sunscreen application given their lack of tan/sunburn
If we had come from any farther away or if it was our first time in Hawaii, it would have been a bit of a waste to just stay at the Disney resort the whole time, but it was great for us. And I think it would be fun for anyone going to Hawaii with kids to spend a few nights there as a part of their trip.
sdlaura thank you, that's so encouraging! yes, if you book flights early and get lucky you can get the bassinet - i think there are usually only one or two per flight available. we took DD when she was 10 months old, and that was...interesting. it definitely could have been worse, but she wasn't thrilled about the bassinet (which we were only able to get one way), and since she was crawling by then, she wanted to explore. so hopefully you're right, and both kids will do okay at those ages. if DD1 will sleep at all, we'll be fine.
we travel to chile at least every other year, because DH's grandparents live on a farm there. once we get there it's lovely. i spent 2 hours every day on the last trip walking around the farm with DD in the ergo so she would nap. she refused naps any other way. everyone kept saying that they felt sorry for me, but truthfully those are some of my favorite moments from the trip! gave me an opportunity to escape the in law craziness and get some really sweet one on one snuggles with my girl.

Jealous of your trips... we've got one night at an indoor water park and all I can think of is... crap I don't have a bathing suit and DNW to buy a maternity one
starsandshamrocks123 a woman was wearing this one in Hawaii and told me she got it at Target. It was super cute and because I have to wear a swimsuit around here frequently I bought it.

There's only one size left in the Black so I got the purple one.
That's really cute. I wonder if they have them in store since it's almost spring. My boobs need extra room! Added to my list.
Maybe it's just my location, but I tried 3 or 4 different targets for a maternity swimsuit and none of them carried them in store. They had/have plenty of regular swim suits though. I bought a maternity tankini from motherhood maternity back in January because C started baby swim. The large bottoms are huge on me and the large top is starting to fit a little snug in the boobs. If they weren't so expensive I'd just go find another one.

We met with our doula tonight! I'm glad we decided to go with her, I think it'll make a big difference having the extra support. Plus she's got that kind of soft soothing voice that you could fall asleep to, so I think that will be nice when the pain starts stressing me out.
