Has anyone used a Doppler? Is it helpful or more trouble than it's worth? I've heard sometimes you can have a hard time finding the baby and freak yourself out. I'm sure we probably have a few weeks to go before baby can be heard, but was thinking about one and wondering if it's a good idea.

Theophania has offered me hers. If I take her up on that offer, it won't be until after 14 weeks. And my RE suggested using it right after a good OB appointment so I don't freak myself out if I can't find the HB

I got a doppler from a friend (@led) and I'm probably going to wait until 10w to really start using it. Supposedly, you *can* hear a heartbeat as early as 8w, but I don't want to freak myself out if I can't find it. With anterior placenta, it can take even longer to find reliably (I think LED said 12w for her?). So without knowing my placenta's location, I figure at 10w would be a good time to start seriously looking.

I need to find mine but my OB rec'd that I get one when I was pg with DS1. I didn't use it until 12 weeks and purposefully did NOT get one that registered the BPM because I didn't want to be interpreting changes.
I think getting a medical grade one makes a difference. You can rent them too but I think mine was $125 maybe? I used it throughout my pregnancy with DS1 anytime I'd have a bleed. I used it less with DS2 because I didn't have any issues but it was nice to have, even later in your pregnancy when your baby is having a lazy day and you aren't feeling as much movement. I've lent it friends too. It was definitely worth it for me.
I've had one (and loaned it out many times) for both my pregnancies. Both times I didn't hear a thing until 10-12 weeks. One of the women I loaned it 2 heard a HB at 9 weeks. I'm 8 weeks today with #3 and I can't hear the HB yet, but I saw the HB at my US this morning.
Bottom line, if you're a worrier don't get one. If you do, use it later. As in your second trimester. There are times where you are not going to be able to hear a HB due to position and of course it can cause some anxiety.

Good thing I just turned over to 8 weeks.
...I asked Frank for hers already. I am ashamed. Sort of.

I used the Sonoline B Fetal Doppler with my first pregnancy. I didn't try it until 10-11 weeks, and it took me probably over an hour to find the heartbeat. It's tricky to use! But I got the hang of it after a couple tries (and once baby was a bit bigger). I only used it every so often until I could feel baby movement, then didn't really use it after that.

One of my best friends has one (she is 17 weeks) and she is going to let me borrow it to try soon (I'm 10 weeks today). I'm excited to use it, but never bit the bullet and bought my own with DD. I was always worried I wouldn't be able to find it and then have to wait another month for my next appointment. I definitely think it's a to each their own type of thing.
I have the Sono Line B. I found DDs heartbeat at 10 weeks. It's pretty tricky to find early on - and can thus cause a lot of unnecessary worry for a few weeks. I like Nariadreaming suggestion to start trying it first after an appt when it's already been found. Doppler should never replace kick counts when it gets far enough for that too.

This exactly. I have the same Doppler and found my dd's at 10w. Once I started to feel her flutters and kicks I put it away to collect dust. I used it about once a week until then to ease my mind. ETA to add: I'll be 9w3d at my first appt, so I'll bust out my Doppler right after that.
I've used them with all of my pregnancies and I like having that reassurance. Plus sometimes it's just nice to lie down and listen for a while. It's very calming. I haven't used it yet with this one but i'll probably start trying around 9 weeks or so. I've heard the heartbeat already at ultrasound appointments.
I bought one with my second after I had several losses, but unfortunately when I mentioned it to my OB she strongly discouraged me using it because of the radiation or wavelengths or something? I don't remember exactly, but I remember tossing that bad boy as soon as I got home. I'm sure used sparingly it's fine, but wanted to share my experience.

That's interesting, I hadn't heard of adverse side effects to using it. Definitely off to go research! 🏃🏻♀️

I have a friend who uses hers nightly and keeps telling me to get one. With twins, I just don't think it's going to bring me peace of mind, since so much else can go wrong, and I have no idea early on who I'm even listening to. Plus, I get so many extra appointments since it's high risk that I'll see them enough as it is. Then I started hearing all this chatter about how controversial they are, and at my first OB appt my OB said she doesn't like to doppler her IVF babies on intake and instead just likes to look for the HB flutter on the sono. So if my OB refused to do it at an appointment, I'm sure as hell staying away.

For whatever it's worth, my RE had no problems dopplering my IVF baby. You of course do you, I'm just throwing that out there

gimmeallthebabies , for your friend nightly sounds super excessive! I'd tell her about the guidelines for using only infrequently.
As for me, I just broke down and ordered one today. Only $29 from a medical supply website! I didn't realize they were so cheap!
I just need some reassurance since it's going to be weeks until my next appointment, and I'm now at the same point where I had my previous loss but still thought I was pregnant so my mind is a mess. I plan on using just once a week until I can feel movement, which has been around 14 weeks with my DDs.

I have the sonoline A I think? You can hear the sound but not see a read out of the actual rate. It was cheap. I probably won't use it this time. I should probably give it away. I have a general phobia of radiation which has gotten much worse since I first got the thing. X-rays terrify me. Those weird scanners at the airport terrify me, to the point that I request manual pat downs instead. I'm certifiable.
I refuse to got through those new scanner machines when pregnant. Even when the annoyed TSA agent summoned to do my pat down tries to tell me how safe it is.

Yeah, my RE has no problem with it either. So I've heard the HBs. I think my OB just doesn't do it before they're released from REs, so I was still technically in my RE's care at intake with my OB. That said, I'm not going to go out and buy one and use it nightly like my crazy friend, who seems to want everyone to be as fearful as her (seriously, this woman keeps bringing up all these worst case scenarios so I just stop the conversation by signing off of FB chat). I just personally don't want to use a medical device at home given the controversy. Happy with whatever my doctors decide. I also realize we'll be seeing our babies a bit more due to MFM appointments.

Yeah absolutely not lol. I can't decide if the doppler is good for her anxiety or if it's feeding her anxiety but either way, I'd check out of that too!

Guyssssss I found a heartbeat today with my Sonoline B! DS Is napping so I thought I'd try since the house is quiet and after a just a min or two there it was! I'm 9 weeks today
Congrats! Any tips? I tried yesterday at 9w and couldn't get anything. Totally didn't freak out (thanks to advice earlier in this thread) but was a little bummed. I tried right above the public bone and went side to side a bit.

In addition to what @musicboxdancer said, it helps me to know where baby is already at. Because of the 3 ultrasounds I've had already, I know baby is on my right side so that really helps to narrow it down.
Are you using gel? I'm not sure how much it matters, I'm just curious.

Cythe - yep, used gel, but maybe not enough? It seemed to rub off quickly and I reapplied a little, but maybe I should have been more liberal?
My OB didn't say what side baby was on, but she did say it was tucked way back in a corner. I actually called and asked for a quick check, they said they'd see me for a u/s on Tuesday, so I think I'll just wait for that and leave the Doppler alone.

Oh I bet if you have an anterior placenta or a hiding baby that would make things a lot harder this early. I'd wait for the u/s too and really focus on where the doctor is looking for baby and go from there.

I tried yesterday but couldn't find anything... not freaking out because I wasn't taking my time as much as should have (tried to hide in between kids running around) and I know it's still pretty early but wanted to give it a shot anyway. I think i'll try again tonight after the kids go to bed and I can take my time. I was bleeding again yesterday and the day before so I wanted a bit of reassurance.

I borrowed a friend's doppler and after some serious searching I found the HB last night. I measured it at 168 - about the same as it was at the doctor. So neat!
