I agree that getting the baby here safely no matter what way is the most important thing...with that being said, had I not prepared for the birth I wanted the first time around there would be no way I could have done it. I do think my doula helped set realistic expectations and the biggest thing for me was trusting her and my doctor to not do any interventions that weren't necessary.
I was med free with my daughter and plan on going about the same plan as with her. Of course my body & the baby may have different ideas, so I'm not tying myself down to it.
I have the worst pain tolerance ever. But I want to try for a vbac, so I want to go without meds as long as possible. I'm thinking about hypnobabies to prepare for pain management and I'd like to have a doula this time. I know I'll get the epi at some point, I just want to go as long as I can without it. If I end up needing another csection I'll get all the drugs.
With DS, I wanted to try to labor as long as I could without (I wanted to be able to move around) but was open to drugs if I needed them. There was a point where the contractions were coming so fast I thought I couldn't do it for several more hours, but it turns out I was busy going from a 3 to an 8 in about 20 minutes, and they pulled in the closest doc they could find to catch him because my OB wasn't there yet - it was less than three hours after I'd walked into L&D feeling kind of foolish for worrying about my "cramping." So no time for drugs.
Fun fact: The last session of our childbirth class was that night. We went to L&D for reassurance on the way in because I'd lost my plug the day before and was having cramps, DH ran upstairs to tell them we'd be late, and L arrived before the class was over. So I guess we passed
I'm planning to play it by ear again and be flexible. But if it's true that the second child comes faster, I'll just be aiming not to pop out the kid in the parking lot!
Shit doesn't always just happen. L: arrived 5.23.13 at 34 weeks with gastroschisis. 131 days in the NICU; short bowel syndrome, g-tube, home TPN; 11 surgeries. Line-free since 12.28.16! Blog
I was in labor with DD for 33 hours and didn't get an epi until hour 27. I stalled out at 5cm and was put on pitocin (hr 19) and that even didn't help much. My night nurse didn't want me out of bed for some stupid reason so part of me thinks why I ended up needing pitocin. I'd like to try going med free until I can't take the pain anymore again.

With DD I got the unmedicated natural birth I wanted & had my amazing doula & midwives , but it was a lot longer than I planned on , I didn't progress very quickly, hoping to have a similar birth this time but want to be able to labor at home as long as possible and have a much shorter labor! I will say having a doula was the best thing I could've done for natural childbirth goals!!! the hospital tried to intervene so many times and she was there to help get me other safe options to help me progress, they hated me bcuz I was there for days trying to get DD out on my own lol!
