I did it! I accepted the offer for the in house position and gave notice to my firm today. Everyone was super supportive and had the same general "of course you have to take it, it's an amazing opportunity" message. One partner described it as "an opportunity of a lifetime". It makes me feel good about the decision.
Now we need to find DH a job, then it'll be perfect. I'm a bit stressed about that - we've been looking for a few weeks now but haven't even found anything that's suitable to apply to. But my relocation package covers career counselling so we'll get in touch with those people and see if they have any good suggestions.
Thanks. I feel a little guilt stepping back since this will limit my ability to a get a promotion and whatnot but, honestly, I don't want a promotion. I've been manuevering for this since DD1 was born 5+ years ago! My mother will not be pleased to hear, though. Oh well.
On the Bainbridge Island thing, thanks for all the input!
Yes, my office would be uphill. I'm looking at it as the chance to have the World's Greatest Ass. And we can't afford anything else that wouldn't be more than an hour commute and would have good schools for the kids. DH is already having issues with sending the kids to public school, so having small schools in a close-knit community was an important factor.
Also other people at the firm live on the island, so I assume if the ferry is closed, they can work from home.
librarychica - marathon, not a sprint, and the finish line changes - I think it's awesome! It doesn't mean promotion and aggressive careering won't happen later. If that's what you end up wanting later. I get it - I get it from everyone including DH. I sideline myself to WFH. I can't imagine my life without that flex.
