I'm bad at summarizing so this could get long, sorry in advance.
On March 28, I took DS to play group in the morning. I wasn't feeling great but he needed to burn off some energy. We wound up leaving early since he wasn't listening and I was getting really sore chasing him around. When I got home, I realized I was having contractions. Not only was I having them but they were consistently 5 minutes apart- labour had begun.
Since it still seemed early, DH and I took DS for ice cream then went to a park for a last afternoon as a family of 3. I'm so glad we had that time together, it was really special knowing it was the last time it would be that way. The contractions started to get more intense and closer together so we took DS to my friend's house where he would be staying until my mom arrived. Leaving him was so hard, I had never been away from him overnight and I cried a lot even though he was happily playing when we left.
We got to the hospital and my doctor happened to be there. Even though I was early (about 3 cm with contractions 3-5 minutes apart) she suggested I should stay since my first labour went quickly once things got going. I needed antibiotics since I was GBS positive and we didn't want to risk not getting them in time.
The first few hours were pretty uneventful, I got the antibiotics in and was able to come off the IV and move around. I was coping well with the contractions, the brief periods I had to be hooked up to monitors in bed were definitely the most difficult. DH was amazing in helping me get through the contractions where I couldn't move around. Once the pain got more intense I got in the shower which was amazing for pain relief. I didn't realize how intense things had gotten until it was time for monitoring again. I was really struggling to sit in bed through the contractions and couldn't wait to get back in the water.
In the end, I didn't get back in. Things started to pick up more and more quickly. They checked and I was at about 8.5 cm, the doctor was going to leave the room when I felt I needed to push. Sure enough, in a couple minutes I had reached 10. I had a moment of panic as I remembered the pain of DS being born but I was able to calm myself fairly quickly and focus again. I'm not sure how long I pushed but DH said it wasn't long.
Things got scary for a minute when my doctor asked me to hold off on pushing because the cord was around baby's neck twice. They were able to quickly unwrap it, I gave a couple more pushes and baby girl was born screaming. I was so relieved to hear her strong cry so soon. I was so excited to finally meet our baby and finally find out the sex. I had a small tear and some stitches but I could not be happier with how things went overall. Healthy baby, healthy mama and the med-free birth I had hoped for.
TL; DR: Team green became team pink after 11.5 hours of labour. Lauren was born March 28 at 11:15 pm weighing 7 lbs 6oz at 19.25 inches long.
