I'm still trying to get a handle on what's going on in Syria. I've been reading about the gas attacks the last two days and it's absolutely heartbreaking. But I'm confused by all the conflict and the history there. And then more confused by how other countries might be involved?

There has been a civil war going on in Syria for the last six years. The Assad regime is responsible for the mass killings of innocent civilians in the country in an effort to... I dunno, stay in power. Russia backs Assad. I don't think they've said that exactly, but they've been explicit with the US about the US staying out of Syria. Obama never acted against Syria. I think he tried to and the GOP led Congress shot it down, but I don't believe he ever pushed it. Trump was always explicit that the US should stay out of Syria, and in his America First rantings, he repeated that sentiment. Three days ago he was blaming Obama for not taking action against Syria, and in the same breath saying the US wouldn't get involved, because, I dunno, Putin is his BFF. And today he's saying after he saw photos of the victims of the chemical attack that he had to retaliate. It's odd because of the Russia connection. It also feels extremely poorly thought out.
Someone correct any errors in my explanation above please.
That's a pretty good recap. I hope there is some bigger plan / endgame in mind, but I fear there isn't. Obama should have done what Trump did years ago, in the sense of go alone without congress knowing he wouldn't get the approval from them, not the reacting without what we can likely assume is no grand plan. That whole situation just breaks my heart.

Agreed. Something should have been done before tonight. By someone with more foresight. This just feels so poorly executed. The news reported that Russia was not warned this would be done, nor the UN. So, he basically just ordered an air strike with no ones support. I've also read of the possibility of there having been Iranian or Russian personnel on the airfield that was bombed... so... scary.
