I realize the N16's are a bit young but once B started eating solids and we had to pack his lunches for daycare, these were perfect. It took a lot of worry out of our meal planning, he always had a good homemade meal even if we ordered out etc.
Thank you for posting that reminder sophiegrace. I've been getting CPR cert every year for the past 12 yrs and still need the reminder. Especially during a stressful event!
aggiebug you did a much better job describing BLW than I have done before. Thank you.
So, the tongue thrust reflex seems to have gone. But J still keeps trying to lick the spoon rather than open his mouth. It's almost like he wants to slurp the food off the spoon. Any ideas how to coax him to open his mouth?
Mimicking you will help. And what about letting him play with the food/spoon. This age is all about putting things and their hands in their mouth. Let him 'self feed' might help.

Tried rice cereal with formula last night and she wasn't feeling it. Guess we will try a few more times. MH picked up a first vegetables pack of jars at whole foods last night, so guess we will start those in a few days.
Our pediatrician wants us starting earlier this time since new studies about allergens being started earlier. We will do strictly purees until closer to 7m I think.
D is finally starting to show any interest in food. She's 5 months and 5 days today, so we aren't ready to go full fledged yet, but we're gearing up. She has now had tastes (like a drop off my finger) of squash soup and avocado, and has had a blast sucking on cantaloupe spears and last night a pizza crust at the brewery (lol).
I am thinking within 2 weeks I will mash something up really well for her (probably avocado), undress her, and let her go to town on it with her hands, in the hope that she'll be really stimulated and maybe even get a little bit in her mouth!
Ha my kid is trying to figure out why I am holding out on the food for him. He sits on the table while we eat and he spends the entire time watching us eat and reaching for our plates. One more week kiddo, one more week

Lilah is really into food all of a sudden. She loved peaches this week and had butternut squash with cinnamon. She also tried to steal a cupcake from me! I had to have another mom help pry her hand off of it since I was holding her in my lap. But, she's not that into textures so we're mostly sticking to purees. This week I want to do avacado and apple.
She's so different than Lillian. Lillian basically wanted nothing to do with solids until she was probably 8 or 9 months old. She eats really well now, but at first it was all I could do to get an ounce or two of food into her.

I gave O a piece of honeydew melon in one of those mesh holders. At first I thought he liked it bc he was gnawing away! But then he started refusing and made the funniest disgusted faces.
As long as the solid food doesn't take the place of his formula, he could have more food if he's hungry. There's nothing wrong with a little extra veggies.
It's just taking me longer to adjust to him growing up so fast. I don't know how we've been doing solids for almost 2 months already. In my head he's still just eating for fun but I think he's taking it more seriously lol.
Finally joining this thread because my end of month baby finally got some real food! Started avocados over the weekend and she couldn't get enough of them! No food goes wasted in this house, she got mad when the bowl was empty/.
starbuck27 Look at those faces! I didn't know you could do pasta already. They can eat that ok?
*shrug* I didn't really look it up just gave them a couple pieces. They really just sucked off the sauce, tho.
Haha gotcha. You're supposed to be able to do anything you eat, right? (within reason of course)
My mom is dying to feed him some middle eastern dishes that she makes. She said I was eating it at this point when I was his age. I'm still exploring different single foods right now but I told her we'll try it in a couple months.

I gave J a little taste of chicken tikka masala the other night and he got reallllly excited, but I figured that may be a little much for his system at this point lol
Indian food can be a bit much for anyone's system lol. My mom wanted to give him hummus the other day and all I could think about was the gas.

Stop it. Can I PLEASE come for dinner? Your babies are already eating better than my poor husband.

starbuck27 Did you make your own chicken tikka masala? I have never made my own and really want to. I'm also scared of blw, but Lilah really enjoys grabbing things from us and munching on them.
ClassyMrsA no we actually get ours at Costco. It's really good! I made Indian food a few times but it can be really labor intensive, depending on the recipe.
Funny enough I just saw a recipe for homemade chicken tikka masala on FB yesterday. I think I saved it. If I did I'll come back and post the link.

Yesssss
I want to see how many babies I can hold while having a dance party with W.
Has anyone started dairy? I'm eager to get going with it, but I thought it's a later on food? Like 7-8 months. But maybe that's just because of when Lillian started it? I'm trying to get some more fat into this kid and she did not like avocado.

ClassyMrsA I've let C lick a little bit of homemade "yogurt" that my mom makes. I didn't know it was ok for dairy now so I might let him try a bit more.
Is there any food completely off limits? It seems like there's different recommendations for when to start certain things but overall it looks nothing is TRULY off limits (except maybe honey) as long as formula/BM is still their main source of nutrition.

Honey, straight up milk, fish high in mercury, and nut butters that have not been thinned out (think a dollop in a cup of yogurt) are the ones I think everyone agrees on. Some places have other things on the list, but there are differing opinions.
waitwhat personally I would just nurse him as usual and continue to offer solids 1-2 hours afterwards until he begins to be more interested. The breastmilk is where he should be getting almost all of his nutrition until age 1 so better that he get all he needs from there and the solids are just a nice "dessert" or whatever you want to call it.
This is just my POV though, speaking as someone whose baby could really care less about solid foods at this point. I figure she has 6+ months until she needs to be eating them regularly.
The only thing I would add that is related to the off limits conversation is uncut grapes (or grape tomatoes). Because the skin doesn't dissolve or reshape easily, choking is a real hazard.
I still cut my nearly 3 yo grapes because that sh&$! scares me.
Those who are feeding oatmeal/purées, how much are you doing. We are doing two 'meals' a day. Each has 2tbsp of oatmeal and 2tbsp purees, one sweet potato(or something alike) and one fruit.
What are you all doing?
Only about 2-3 tbsp total (1 of oatmeal + 2 of whatever purée). We were doing more and she'll eat more that that, but we're in a distracted nursing battle at the moment so I don't want to fill her up with real food.

We do whatever she'll take. That's fluctuated between a few bites and 3oz. Since it's not very much and hasn't made her nurse any less, I'm ok with letting her eat what she wants.
Re off-limits foods: I still cut up Lillian's food for the most part. We also still don't do whole nuts, seeds, popcorn, hard candy or sticky foods/gum. Bread is surprisingly scary since it can end up being a big sticky doughball. But she eats it. We just watch her.

I usually do 2 "ice cubes" (which are about 1 oz each) and sometimes add a tablespoon of cereal.
But yesterday he ate 2 cubes + 1 tbsp rice and then half a banana mashed up. He still finished 7oz of formula an hour later too. The kid can eat!
