We looked at some recently, although aren't planning to buy until we get to VA (and I may wait til bday/Christmas since he's happy with his scooter).
B is 43" tall (srsly) and his inseam is around 17.5" Based on the size charts I saw, he's right on the border bn 14" and 16" wheels. 14" fit him perfectly. The 16" did seem big, but at the same time he outgrew his trike (which also seemed big) really quickly.
All that to say, if I was purchasing today I would probably get the 16". 14" fit him great now but in 6 months I'd worry he will have outgrown it.
Are our kids really supposed to be on real bikes with training wheels already? I thought we were all still in the tricycle/scooter stage? Has that ship sailed?
We have a 14". I have no idea how tall Sam is but he's definitely on the shorter side. We bought it for his birthday and he was at the tall end of the 12" bike so we decided on the bigger one for him to grow into.
It's perfect and he rides it all the time. I'd actually err on the side of bigger so he can keep using it for a while

H rides her bike like a maniac. She learned how to pedal on the trike last summer and quickly picked it up again this spring on her bike. She zips up and down the sidewalks now, and loves riding it to the local park.

Josie just got the peddling thing down on her tricycle maybe two months ago. I'll sit on your bench.
I think it's a mix at this age. B has physically outgrown his trike height-wise. He is obsessed with the scooter Santa brought, though, so he has a good way to get around.
DH and I are getting beach cruisers for Christmas, I think, so that's why we were kind of thinking about a bike for him at that time, as well.
