We are debuting our formal China tonight. We got it for our wedding, and I mean all of it, full service for 12 and crystal... which looking back seems like a mistake since it 3 years later and this is the first time we are using it and we definitely don't need to be, we just thought it would be fun.
I am making Passover dinner, not doing a full sedar, we have one on Friday.
I really want to host more holidays but family lives so far...
I have hosted a lot of meals but I've never really made the table before like done it all up, but going to try tonight!
Do you have formal China? Did you register for it. Yes. No. It was handed down from the in-laws. I think it was a great grandma's or great great grandma's. I'm not sure. It was made in Occupied Japan.
Are you/did you host any holiday meals or special occasion meals this year? Just J's birthday. I really enjoy it though so hopefully we will do more in the future.
Any pretty tables? Nope.
Talk about whatever... I'm really glad we aren't having turkey for Easter this year. Granny is making lasagna and everyone else is bringing sides. I'm in charge of pizelles. I made so many for our wedding almost 10 years ago I never wanted to make them again. I guess it's about time.
I tend to be very practical and couldn't bring myself to ask for china and crystal from a practicality standpoint. We also stand to inherit at least 3 full sets of china. I use the ones above a handful of times a year. Mostly because its like navigating a cabinet full of booby traps to get them out and back in. We had an accident two years ago where the top shelf in the china cabinet fell and it took out a bunch of pieces. Even at the modest price my set is it was a lot of money to replace.

I like making my table up especially now that I have a separate dining room. It makes the house look nice and special

And also we don't have any serving pieces that match our China... is that weird? We have a coffee pot and that's it. No big plates, gravy boat, etc.
I have no serving dishes that match either. I didnt even think about it until you said this. Well, shit. I'm going to have to fix that but I have no idea where to store them.

We have good China. We've only used it once, and it was just dh dd1 and I. My Nana collected a set for my sister, cousin and I when we were growing up. Now that we have a new house with a China hutch it's finally on display. Before that it was packed away for years. We don't really do the pretty table thing lol. We hosted a late Christmas dinner here in January. My bil cooked most of the food at his house and brought it here. We plan to host my extended family next year for Christmas.

Right around the time I was getting married there were two other women registered at BBB with my same name. One was in the next state with a very similar list as mine the other was like bizzarro Sheila. She was in the south and all her dishes were super fanceh and decked out. Her gravy boat was over $100 and someone bought it for her. In fact most of her registry was purchased. And here I was hemming and hawing over whether asking for a pots and pans set was gift grabby.

What I have done in the past is force myself to use the good plates for Sunday dinner. That way I have an excuse to use them. I need to start doing this again. I just need to put a force field around K first.

Yes, more about what we are doing than the food...
I am making/made: Brisket Roasted potatoes Asparagus Gefitle fish (just doctored from the store which makes me sad, bc I had been making it with my aunt and with my aunt and grandmother before she passed for a really long time, and the store bought can't hold a candle, but the full process is fairly involved and disgusting...)(if you don't know what this is fish meatballs is the best description I've ever heard) Charozets (it's apples and nuts all chopped up in a sauce made from wine and honey) My friend is bringing matzoh ball soup Dessert is flourless chocolate cake, fruit, homemade ice cream and whipped cream. And meringue cookies.
So food wise a lot and would be totally fine for a full Sedar, the only thing we aren't having that we usually would at my family Sedar is kugel (which is like a casserole thing, usually with egg noodles but with matzoh during Passover because you can't have noodles). The Passover kind just isn't my super favorite so easy to cut...
A full Sedar would be the part that comes before the eating... there is the ceremonial retelling of the story of Passover before you eat, it's very participatory and I love it. You read/sing from a book called a Haggadah and it's just really great. They are usually the first two nights of Passover (which is 8 days long), so last night and tonight. But we are going to one on Friday at someone's house just bc the weekend is more convenient for ppl... so tonight we are just doing the meal, I am making a Sedar plate though (which is a traditional display piece, I'll post a pic later)
Passover is my favorite holiday or maybe tied with Thanksgiving. I am not super religious or anything but it illustrates my absolute favorite pieces of being Jewish and I think really sums up what Judaism is all about. It's a holiday that is completely celebrated in the home with friends and family. There are no services at temple or anything, it's just an at home holiday. It's about celebrating life, being free and drinking lots of wine. It encourages you to invite people to your home and to your life. The Sedar we are going to on Friday, I met this woman once at a baby play date and she found out we didn't have a Sedar to go to and just immediately invited us to her house. Truly in the spirit of the holiday.

My house is so tiny. We don't have a dining table, only a breakfast bar, let alone nice china. We do have some decent Crate & Barrel dishes we registered for and got for our wedding. They are our everyday dishes though. We don't do a lot of party hosting. We do have a 4th of July BBQ and a Labor Day party every summer. Small house, huge backyard. My sister lives in the neighborhood next door and her house is the perfect setup for get-togethers, so she usually hosts. It's just easier. DH made me this table for our anniversary a few years ago. It seats 8 comfortably. It's the closest thing we have to a dink g table and it lives on the patio. The original plan was to have the center planters hold drinks, but then they were just empty and ugly most of the time, so we planted some plants in them.

That sounds amazing! Please do post a picture. I had a lot of Jewish friends in high school but have never been to a sedar. That super nice of that woman to invite you to her house. I hope you have a great time!

How many people are you having over tonight?
There are just 6 of us (and LO). I know I have too much food. It's hereditary and I can't seem to escape it.

My in-laws have turkey for everything. I kind of hate it.

halfahippy I love what you did with the centerpieces. That table is gorgeous! Your husband made that?!
We have a small house and bug backyard too. It's hard in the winter but absolutely wonderful in the summer. Having a big yard for K and future siblings to play in was a must for me. Now that it's getting nice out in so happy to have the yard.

I would bring a ham for myself then. Also, turkey must be stupid expensive this time of year. Ham, lamb, and beef are what's on sale. Just the thought of how much they spent on a turkey is giving me anxiety. Lol

I always make way too much. Growing up, there was nothing more embarrassing then not having enough food for people. I partially blame this for why I haven't been able to lose much weight.

He made it completely on his own. I was very impressed. It's actually super simple and sturdy. I love it! We're lucky because we live in SoCal so even in winter we have a lot of decent weather. Our backyard and covered patio are definitely part of our living space.

When we first met, MH had an end table in his room that he had made. It was.... Not good.

We don't have fancy China, but we have a nicer Mikasa set that we use only for special events. My parents currently have that set with them. I didn't want to bring that to Hawaii and risk any of it getting broken. Part of the reason why we didn't get fancy china is because we move so much, so it doesn't suit our lifestyle.
We just sold our formal dining room table, since we decided to forego a formal dining room. We had a farmhouse style table built with benches and a couple chairs to put on the ends. I love it. It's the only table for eating that we'll need, since it can easily seat 8.
I don't really do tablescapes. Mostly because the kids make a mess of everything. One day I'll have a pretty table top without junk everywhere...
jewel441 I was wondering wtf that was. I thought maybe it was soy sauce in a bottle lying down and was so confused.
Your table looks beautiful! How did it go?
Haha. It went well, it was really fun, the brisket didn't come out fantastic but everything else was really tasty! I still need to perfect my brisketing... it was fun to do it up fancy and eat in the formal dining room, China, crystal, etc.

I'm glad it went well. Perfecting the brisket will give you an excuse to set your table up again. 😊
Our everyday china is Mikasa Italian Countryside. I think it looks really pretty on the table and can be dressed up and down. I dress it up at Easter and Thanksgiving but I don't seem to have a picture of the table set for either of those holidays. The only shot I have is from Mother's Day a few years ago:
I do have my mom's Christmas china, which I love. Childhood memories, I guess. The most recent picture I have of it on the table is from 2012, in our old house. We had to use a folding table to seat everyone so I didn't have a tablecloth. Oh, well.

Do you have formal China? Did you register for it? No, and no. H was in the Navy when we met and has always planned to be in at least 20 years. Lots of moving + pretty breakables=very bad idea
Are you/did you host any holiday meals or special occasion meals this year? Does Jubilee's birthday count? We had lots of people (mostly family) so we did paper plates. This year it's our turn to host Christmas for my side of the family, but with there being 19 of us, fancy is impossible. We only have 12 everyday (Corelle) plates so it'll be paper plates again.
