- Shade is key. We bought one of those beach tents last year and it was a lifesaver - worth every penny.
- Keep a bucket of water near your area so you can quickly dunk little hands to get sand/food/etc. off before eating/drinking.
- I found the chairs with the backpack straps are best. That way your hands are free to either carry baby and/or hold toddler's hand while walking. The bagged camp chairs work, too, but aren't as user-friendly.
- Set up an inflatable baby pool for your toddler if you think he'll be scared of the ocean.
- Bring regular AND spray sunscreen. We lathered J in regular, but it was really easy to reapply spray if needed (we sprayed it on our hands, then rubbed it on her). Trying to rub regular sunscreen on a toddler covered in sand is a real PITA for everyone involved. We did it, but it sucked. The spray was much easier. And we reapplied every 35 minutes (I set a timer on my phone).
- Pack plastic grocery bags for trash and diapers.
Honestly, for the baby, shade is key. Babies at the beach are either super easy or super hard. I've found no in between LOL

loves2shop4shoes, DS1 LOVED it when we took him around 7 month old. DS2 LOVES the water, so I am hoping he will be into it when we go. We aren't going until the fall, but he does go to the pool a lot and will probably spend some time at the lake in the near future.

loves2shop4shoes - A baby a the beach during the middle of summer is hell. It's so hot... the air, the sand, the sun... HOT. But taking a baby in the spring or fall is fine. We took J around 5 months in the fall and she was fine. But the next summer, when she was about 1.5YO, she was miserable because of the heat.
It also depends on the kid. My niece loved the beach, even as a baby. J didn't really enjoy it until last summer when she was about 3.5YO. But J's a hot body and super fair skinned so she's sensitive.

loves2shop4shoes some babies love the beach - they'll play in the sand for hours, look at the waves, nap peacefully in the shade. Some babies haaate it.
My tips for the beach: inflatable pool is key. So are spf rash guards and good hats.
Road trips: I prefer to leave after putting baby down at night because that's when he sleeps the longest stretch. Bring a lovey or blanket from home thar smells like baby/you for the crib away from home.
We bought a 10x10 tent and took it to the beach with us last summer and hung out under there with sand toys, a baby pool and snacks. I put my beach chair just outside the tent when I wanted some sun but I could still play with DD. It was a blast. This was with a 20 month old though. I've never been to the beach with a baby before so no advice there.

DD1 is a June baby and DD2 is a Nov baby so we've had different aged baby summer fun. We went to a cottages with friends and they loved the water, the hammock, everything. We just made sure to keep up with sun protection, tried to always be aware of the shady spots. She slept great in the fresh air. This summer I bought a pop up sun shade to make it easy with all of the kids now that we live near the ocean. I like SPF rash guard sets, my kids basically live in them in the summer because the sand rolls off easier and they dry quickly if they play in water. I buy the "boy" sets for my girls because the girl sets more often come with bikini bottoms and I prefer the shorts for more coverage and day long usability for play. Regular sunscreen applications, I always have at least 2 water bottles with me.
For road trips I like leaving like an hour before nap time. I found that way they were awake for a bit, then took their nap so we often got a 4 hour stretch total before needing to stop for diapers and feeding. I got a rubber case that strapped to the back of the seat headrest for the tablet so the girls could watch movies, Netflix lets you download some stuff now for offline use which is genius. Snacks prepacked in snack catcher cups for easy pass back and minimal mess. I use pacifier clips to attach lovies to their carseats so they don't have a meltdown requiring me to pull over to get favorite lovies that fell to the floor.
