Finally getting around to writing this. Sorry, this turned out to be a novel!
Went to my 39 week appointment last Wednesday morning. My doctor told me I was still the same as last week at 2.5 Cm, 70% effaced and baby boy was still at -1 so I asked her to do a membrane strip while she was down there. The appointment took longer than usual because I mentioned that the baby had been a lot less active the last two days so they wanted to do a NST. Everything looked fine but I left super stressed out because C was with me and acting crazy, I dropped my phone and shattered it and got a piece of glass in my finger that took me forever to get out. We were supposed to go to the park to play but needed to go get my phone fixed at the mall instead. Pretty much as soon as I pulled out of the doctors office contractions started. I didn't time them because I had been having contractions daily for quite some time so I figured I'd just wait and see if they stuck around and got more intense. The entire time we were at the mall getting my phone fixed I noticed they were definitely starting to get more painful but I couldn't time them because I didn't have my phone. We walked around a little, played in the play area and had lunch before we headed home.
Once we got home around 2, I started timing contractions. After realizing they were pretty steady at 4 to 5 minutes apart for an hour and a half I called my doctors office. The nurse practitioner who saw me that morning told me to wait until they were more intense or closer together to call back. She said it was probably just cramping from the membrane strip earlier so I definitely started second guessing myself. This was all completely new to me because with C my water broke to start labor and there was no mistaking it.
I cleaned up the house and took a shower. While I was sitting to do my makeup the contractions started to space out a bit but every time I got up they picked back up again. I decided to call the doctor on call instead of the nurse practitioner. She told me that if it were from the membrane strip it probably wouldn't have persisted all day and to come on in and get checked. So my sister came over to get C and we got to the hospital around 8.
The nurse who took us up to labor and delivery was a friend of ours and she told us that since I wouldn't be 39 weeks until the next day that I would have to show cervical change and that they couldn't give me anything to help labor progress. At this point I'm thinking I'm definitely getting sent home and that it's not real labor.
The doctor came in and checked me and said "ok you're at a 4. We're going to move you to a room. Would you like your epidural now?" I literally looked at MH and said "holy fuck I can't believe this is really it". We were moved to a room, I got my epidural and was ready to push by a little after 1am. Four pushes and he was out. Bennett was born at 1:20am at 39 weeks exactly. Seven pounds 9 ounces and 20 inches long.
