Omg how incredibly scary and what an excellent reminder. I always get so nervous when I see kids walking around with food in their mouths. I am so, so glad he is ok. I can't even imagine the panic you must've felt.

Thanks everyone! I wasn't posting to try to get sympathy or anything, just really as a reminder that it really can happen to you and you should learn what to do and pray you never have to use it!
My 15 year old sister actually shared her food with DS then proceeded to chase him around the house, but I was not going to call her out on Facebook. She and my mom both froze, they didn't even call 911. My mom fell on top of me and DS while I was trying to help him. Basically it was a shit show.
Wow sorry haykay13 that sounds like a frantic, awful experience. Glad everything turned out ok despite the chaos. I'll look into some classes in my area.
haykay13, that must've been so scary and I'm glad he is okay. I always get nervous when DS runs with food in his mouth and try to stop him but he never listens. Our pedi office offers these classes all the time and we really need to go. DH claims he knows what to do but I don't know if he remembers and he won't always be there.
Wow, I can't even imagine. Thanks for the reminder. It really can happen to anyone. I remember seeing it happen to a FB friend with watermelon. Which IMO would be the last thing I would thing they would choke on.
haykay13, thank you so much for such an important reminder, my CPR has definitely lapsed, I am going to check out our YMCA's website and see if they are offering a class anytime soon.
Also, I am so sorry you had to go through that, my heart was gutted reading it. I am so happy and grateful that everything turned out okay.
So glad he's okay haykay13! I used to work for the Red Cross so I've been certified before, but I know a lot has changed since the last time I got certified. I need to sign up and get my mom to go too since she's never taken a class.

Thank you for sharing - I know that had to be so scary. I always worry about things like this, and honestly, I appreciate you sharing for the fact that you reminded me it DOES still happen and can happen at any time. We try so hard to keep the kids from running around with food in their mouths but that's not always the easiest. And of course they don't have to be running around for it to happen anyway!
I'm so sorry that happened haykay13. You did the right thing - take action.
Someone commented on my Facebook that you don't do blows to the back for children over 1, just go straight to the Heimlich. Is that correct?
I couldn't think and I feel like the class I took only covered infants and adults, not toddlers/children.
First, I am so glad he is ok now and I am sorry for how scared you both felt.
I do believe that I have heard this too. Possibly because food can blow back and end up in the lungs instead of coming out. I think there was a show where the mother was telling her story and how that happened to her child.
Despite my anxiety, when emergencies happen I'm always very calm - which I think is down to my job.
I forget how others freeze though. Once me and my sister came across a woman having a fit whilst driving. I threw my phone at my sister to call an ambulance and ran to help the lady (and get the car to safety). After a while I shouted to my sister to ask about the ambulance and she just stood there, frozen and said she was too scared to call them!!!
But I think if it's dealing with my own kids, I wouldn't be calm and all my training would fly out the window.
Thanks so much for sharing this as I'm going to sign up for a first aid for babies/toddlers class.

I take medical cpr every other year and the details still get a little foggy.
I believe it's back thrusts until 1, then Heimlic after that. No more finger sweep unless you visibly see something (blind sweeps can push the object deeper.)
Omg I was just at a bbq and this post was running through my mind with all the kids walking around eating chips, hot dogs, pretzels, etc. I was trying so hard not to be annoying and neurotic.
